Apocalyptic prog quartet PERIHELION stream single ahead of album release
Perihelion_03b crop.jpg

Hungarian apocalyptic prog rock/metal act PERIHELION have unveiled new single 'Rejtek' ahead of the release of new album Agg on 6th December.

Premiered via Heavy Blog Is Heavy, watch 'Rejtek' here: https://youtu.be/IatGAVtGqz8

'Rejtek' is the latest single taken from new album Agg, seven tracks inspired by the world's ever-increasing moral decline and turmoil, that is both abrasive and yet strangely comforting; a smorgasbord of dark sounds, emotions and feelings.

PERIHELION fuse psychedelic rock, avant-garde metal and post-black metal, to create a sound that is atmospheric, ethereal, beautiful and haunting in equal measure. A band who use dynamics as much as melody, the quartet create captivating soundscapes with many twists and turns; each track is a journey in its own right.

Translating as "very very old" in archaic Hungarian, Agg is a concept album about escapism. Each track has a different take on the process of heading towards death, the ultimate escape, which serves as a sour metaphor for the decline of humanity. Agg was recorded live in a rehearsal space with the view to creating something truly natural and atmospheric, and the result is a chilling and distinctly organic sound.

Having played together since 2001, PERIHELION officially formed in 2012 and released their self-titled debut that year. In 2014 they followed up with an EP entitled Nap fele néz which caught the attention of respected French label Apathia records, who released their sophomore album Zeng in 2015. Subsequent releases Hold (EP 2016) and Örvény (album 2017) gained the band huge international attention, which saw them tour Europe, play festivals in France and Switzerland, and open for Zeal & Ardor and Tormentor.

Autumn 2019 saw PERIHELION tour Europe in support of first single ‘Erdő’; more live dates to be announced soon.

BE WELL, featuring producer Brian McTernan and members of Bane, Darkest Hour & Fairweather, release debut EP
BE WELL MAIN PROMO small.jpg

Several of the most respected talents from the world of hardcore have come together for a new project entitled BE WELL. The quintet made their debut by way of a self-titled, 2-song EP out now digitally on Equal Vision Records / Rude Records.

Listen to the tracks 'Strength For Breath' and 'Frozen' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNP3zz9BiKY&list=PL-XbTEkQt3Tbi_uYRlvHLPdUdxvn4sU1X

BE WELL may be a new band, but their roots run deep. Musically, it's emotionally gripping, with an expertly executed blend of melodic hardcore and notes of 90’s post-hardcore influence. The lyrics are deeply personal, and the vocals hark back to early DC bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. The members include Peter Tsouras (Guitar) and Shane Johnson (Drums) from Fairweather, Mike Schleibaum (guitar) of Darkest Hour, and Aaron Dalbec (Bass) of Bane. Rounding out the quintet is the vocalist, Brian McTernan, who is known for his production work with bands like Circa Survive, Hot Water Music, Turnstile and Thrice.

BE WELL's energy is relentless, as McTernan chronicles his struggles with depression and fatherhood through lyrics that are equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful. Fans of the individual members’ past work have anxiously awaited BE WELL's first recorded music. What they’ll get in the band's 7-inch will undoubtedly live up to the anticipation.

Pre-orders are available here and you can stream it here now.

INTECHNICOLOUR announce new album & release 'Miami Funk / Doomer' double A-side
INTECH PROMO PHOTO.png

Stoner rockers INTECHNICOLOUR have announced their new album Big Sleeper, due for release on 21st February 2020 via Big Scary Monsters.

Alongside the album announcement the band have released a double A-side single, 'Miami Funk / Doomer'.

Check out the video for 'Miami Funk' here: https://youtu.be/QlNZyl-QZDg and the video for 'Doomer' here: https://youtu.be/DPQ_kO4TrSc

Vocalist Tobie Anderson comments:

"I am obsessed with documentaries, it's essentially all I regularly consume (besides beer and weed). The lyrics for 'Miami Funk' came from watching docs that only ever seem to point a finger at a problem (or camera if you want to be literal). They don't offer any solutions, they don't offer any explanation, the journalist or filmmaker is just there, existing, watching the problem or subject as a passive bystander. I don't believe this has always been the case and it's not an accusation I would level at all documentary filmmakers, but there are certainly a large number who fit this shoe. So 'Miami Funk' is my remedial way of poking fun at this trend."

"'Doomer' is about getting older," he adds. "It's about realising that I'm not eighteen anymore and in my weird mind, that means my time might be running out? If that makes any sense to 'normal people'. It's about feeling like I might be running out of time and making sure I have made the right choices and chosen to spend my life with the best people. To a certain extent, it's also about a reluctance to get older, that weird feeling we all get, like my fingernails are being pried from my body as I try desperately to hold onto that concept of youth."

Pre-order Big Sleeper here: bsmrocks.com

You can stream or purchase the first single from the album, 'Under The Sun', here: https://orcd.co/under

INTECHNICOLOUR have been confirmed for Big Scary Monsters' Xmas Party at The Lexington, London on 19th December. Tickets are on sale here: https://www.bsmrocks.com/tickets/16026-big-scary-monsters-xmas-party

The band have also announced a February UK headline tour, dates are as follows:

18.02.2020 – Newcastle, Tyne Bank Brewery
19.02.2020 – Glasgow, Broadcast
20.02.2020 – Bristol, The Exchange
21.02.2020 – London, The Black Heart
23.02.2020 – Brighton, The Pipeline

Hailing from Brighton, InTechnicolour are a riffy, groovy, stoner-rock band with a knack for creating a colourful song or two. Formed in 2015 through a want to play loud music through slightly broken amps, the basis of the band was formed.

Comprised of members from the likes of Delta Sleep, LUO and Broker the quartet are a fully formed band of technically gifted musicians, cutting loose and playing music that’s about as far removed from their day jobs as it’s possible to get – and they are doing it better than a good portion of their contemporaries. Landing somewhere between the slack desert-groove of Kyuss and Karma to Burn, the band combine deeply satisfying riffs with a dynamic vocal style, which calls to mind the sounds of Baroness, Gojira and Mastodon.

The band have previously been quoted as saying that they "literally have nothing to say about themselves," but with music this good, it’s highly likely that there’ll be plenty of others willing to do the talking for them.

InTechnicolour have previously toured across the UK and Europe with the likes of Physics House Band, Black Peaks, Polymath, Bitch Falcon and Haggard Cat. The band will conclude 2019 with Big Scary Monsters’ Xmas Party, with a headline UK tour set for February 2020 in support of the album.

NOVA CHARISMA share new single and announce EP via Rude Records / Equal Vision Records
19p11-26-125small.jpg

Progressive duo NOVA CHARISMA have shared 'Gemini'- the lead single from their upcoming release Exposition II, out 7th February on via Rude Records / Equal Vision Records.

Check out 'Gemini' here: https://youtu.be/9XyqNqaRMtQ

'Gemini' showcases a lush sonic soundscape incorporating spacey electronic elements with bursting guitars and singer Donovan Melero’s signature vocal style. Lyrically, the song is about falling back in love with someone that you know you shouldn't and was heavily inspired by The Offspring’s 1992 classic 'Session'. The accompanying visual for the track, directed by Raul Gonzo (IDKHOW, PVRIS), explores the notion of creating an alternate reality through the use of illusions propelled by bold colour and geometric shapes.

Following on the heels of NOVA CHARISMA's debut, Exposition I, the vinyl for which sold out this summer before fans heard even a single note of music, Exposition II finds the duo of Donovan Melero (Hail The Sun) and Sergio Medina (Royal Coda) continuing to push the boundaries of artistic expression. Produced by Mike Watts, Exposition II dives into the idea of the chase - whether it's chasing someone you shouldn't, being chased by a figure in a nightmare or chasing after something you want and not getting it. There's a sense of urgency, isolation and disillusionment found throughout the four-song collection. 'Diary (Don’t Speak)' leads with an eerie tone accentuated by lyrics based on the fear of secrets being revealed after one’s death. 'Hoxton', in it’s abruptness, still manages to bring something fresh to the listener’s ear and the collection’s closer, 'Sonya', find the duo drawing from their post-hardcore roots with spasmodic tempo changes and high-pitched vocals wailing at the chorus.

The band will headline five shows in North America this December and have announced a one-off London UK headliner on 17th January 2020 at Old Blue Last.

Exposition II is available for pre-order here: https://novacharisma.lnk.to/exposition2

On the release, Donovan Melero stated: Exposition II came together in a secluded area in the quiet city of Port Jefferson, NY. This collection of songs illustrated a departure from the chaotic instrumentation that we have always aligned ourselves with. “Gemini" represents this step on new ground.”

VIRGIL DONATI announces the release of Ruination album (EU physical edition)
Virgil_1355.1000.jpg

Virtuoso drummer and composer VIRGIL DONATI has announced European physical release of his new solo effort Ruination, due 7th February 2020.

Taken from the new album, check out current single 'The Last Night That I Lived' here: https://youtu.be/ntZuw4XbRDk

Famed as a drum virtuoso, Virgil is also a multi-instrumentalist: he’s a highly accomplished keyboard player, arranger, producer, lyricist and more, all of which is showcased on the new album. With a career spanning four decades and having worked with some of the finest musicians in the world (inc. Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan), it’s no surprise that Ruination is packed full of sophistication, skill, and exciting composition.

Fusing elements of prog, jazz fusion and occasionally tending toward the heavier, Ruination is an experimental and progressive musical exploration, as tightly controlled as it is dynamic and free. A notable addition on this record is prominent vocals, which add a great texture and entwine traditional songwriting elements into the mix. As expected, Virgil’s skill and creativity behind the kit is undeniably impressive; his ability to paint stunning pictures via his exploration in rhythm is unmatched, and his work on this album is no exception.

The core band on Ruination consists of Irwin Thomas (guitar/vox), Andre Neiri (guitar), Junior Braguinha (bass), Chris Clark (keys), but there are several notable guest performances. Virgil himself performs on keyboards, and he is also joined by some more exceptional players: Anton Davidyants (bass), Matteo Mancuso (guitar), Joe Chindamo (keys), Julian Lage (guitar), Evan Marien (bass), Marco Sfogli (guitar), Alex Argento (keys), Carl Morner Ringstrom (guitar) and Steve Hunt (keys).

Recently winning Modern Drummer Magazine’s ‘Best Recorded Performance’ and named in Music Radar's ‘Prog Drummer of the Year’ top seven this year, there’s no doubt that this is a musician at the top of his game. However, Ruination is more than a show of talent and skill, it’s a stunning musical work that sounds far greater than the sum of its very impressive parts.

Having just completed a tour of the USA East Coast, the band will soon be announcing a West Coast run. Australian and European tours are planned for later in 2020.

Norwegian hardcore punks OBERST announce debut LP and stream new single
Oberst 2 Photo by Johannes Amble.jpg

Norwegian hardcore punk quartet OBERST will release their debut LP Paradise on 17th January via Indie Recordings.

Pre-order: https://orcd.co/oberstparadise

The band have also streamed their new single 'Parting'. Premiered via Deadpress, you can stream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iDBwugfY-g

Purchase here: https://orcd.co/parting

The band comment: “Parting is a song about starting over. Excitement, anxiety, hope and longing for what is left behind share the emotional space in the song. As with any good adventure, there is a naive positivity about what lies ahead. It’s like the romanticised version of a roadtrip you have in your head, that tends to end up being a more taxing experience then first imagined. Soundwise, the song is a melancholic, yet big and hopeful anthem. The song peaks as electronic pop act Ponette delivers the quirky, but still very impactful last lyrics of the song”.

The Oslo-based hardcore/metal troupe OBERST blend their many influences seamlessly into a unique sound: their huge, warm and atmospheric riffs meet hectic, catchy elements driven by intense and at times manic vocals. At times relatable to Mutoid Man, Red Fang, or Kvelertak, OBERST are fast becoming ones to watch.

Originally formed around the mutual interest in music rather than any particular genre, OBERST later found common ground in bands like Mastodon, Baroness, Converge and Cult of Luna. The release of their self-titled debut EP was met with critical acclaim and praised locally as "some of the best metal produced in Norway for a long time".

Following the success of their EP the band have signed with Indie Recordings for their anticipated debut full-length - released 17th January. They've already caught the attention internationally from the likes of Metal Hammer, Total Guitar, and Metal Injection, all taken by the band's infectious attitude.
