GENDER ROLES announce rescheduled UK headline tour for September 2020
GR Photo.png

Brighton indie punks GENDER ROLES have announced rescheduled dates for their upcoming UK headline tour. Originally due to take place in March and April, the new run of shows are confirmed for September 2020 and will be in support of the trio's highly successful debut album PRANG, out now via Big Scary Monsters.

The band will no longer play in Newcastle on the tour but have confirmed a new date in Norwich, while False Advertising will continue to support across all dates.

GENDER ROLES comment:

"Our UK tour has been rescheduled for September 2020. This is not a drill, that’s right, it’s really still happening in September 2020. Catch us cruising the UK in some staggered comfort with False Advertising and wonderful local opening bands each night."

Rescheduled dates:

18.09.2020 - London, The Dome (14+)
19.09.2020 - Norwich, Waterfront (14+)
21.09.2020 - Sheffield, Network (14+)
22.09.2020 - Glasgow, Poetry Club (14+)
23.09.2020 - Birmingham, Asylum 2 (14+)
24.09.2020 - Manchester, Gullivers (18+)
25.09.2020 - Bristol, Exchange (16+)

Refunds for Newcastle will be available at point of purchase and tickets for all other previous dates remain valid. Additional tickets can be purchased here: https://www.genderrolesuk.com

The upcoming tour follows GENDER ROLES' mostly sold-out 2019 headline run, Boston Manor support tour and recent European headline tour. The band are also set to appear at Live At Leeds and Download Festival this summer.

GENDER ROLES recently released their latest single 'Always', taken from PRANG, check it out here: https://open.spotify.com/track/0ZgyEfWfzDXZL6gA9SAKbU

The trio have enjoyed strong support from the likes of Annie Mac, Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. CarterHuw StephensSteve LamacqRadio X's John KennedyKerrang! Radio's Alex BakerAmazing Radio and more. The band also entered Maida Vale Studios in November 2019 to play a 'Live Gig' session on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Annie Mac.

PRANG has not been short of praise from the press with Kerrang! calling it "an album packed with unskipable delights" and DIY stating that GENDER ROLES are "the UK's most vibrant young punk prospects"

Forming after a chance initial meeting at drummer Jordan Lilford’s Brighton Pride party in 2015, GENDER ROLES, also consisting of guitarist/vocalist Tom Bennett and bassist Jared Tomkins, found that Brighton’s DIY scene was the ideal hub to cut their teeth and allow themselves to grow as a band. The inspiration and ethos they could draw on in those early days has been integral to the act they’ve become.

While the coastal city remains the band’s home, it cannot be said to have contained them. Gigging throughout Europe and the States, packing out tents at festivals such as 2000 Trees, and sharing the stage with heroes from Jamie Lenman to Touche Amore and PupGENDER ROLES have built on those early foundations to amass a growing fanbase, drawn to their melodic grunge/punk and dry, candid sense of humour.

Documenting that growth have been the band’s two EPs released so far, 2017’s Planet X-Ray and 2018’s Lazer Rush. While the theme for those EPs was “overcoming the past and looking forward to the future together”, the new, debut album, PRANG, focuses on much more immediate issues, even if it did come from a particularly happy place for GENDER ROLES.

Australian prog prodigies EBONIVORY announce new album
1EP_4840-Edit (1)resize.jpg

EBONIVORY, one of the fastest-rising acts of the blossoming Australian progressive music scene, will release their new album The Long Dream I on 5th June via Wild Thing Records.

Pre-order the record here: https://smarturl.it/thelongdreamI

Watch a teaser trailer for the album here: https://youtu.be/OKWFgi-EDPA

Singer Charlie Powlett comments: "We are absolutely beaming with excitement knowing that the first instalment of our upcoming 2-part album, The Long Dream will finally see the light of day on the 5th of June. Entirely self-produced over the course of 4 years, The Long Dream became infused with self-referential hardship and internal disaster that only further serves its story. Every song presents a completely unique reimagining of what progressive music is capable of, while maintaining cohesive melodic bonds like a sequence of dreams that makes perfect sense, but only until you commit it to words. It is a twisting journey that weaves through depression and elation; past, present, and future. This album is the cornerstone of EBONIVORY. It encompasses everything we are passionate about as a band, and represents our leap of faith into the raging storm that is the modern music industry".

Watch the video for EBONIVORY's previous single 'Explosions After Dark' here: http://bit.ly/explosionsafterdark

Purchase and stream here: smarturl.it/explosionsafterdark

Hailing from Ballarat in rural Victoria, Australia, Ebonivory’s The Long Dream I is the first of a two-part concept album, delivering a vision that is pure and unrestrained by musical conformity, often leaving the listener nostalgic, enraged, and paralysed within the span of seconds. Entirely self-produced, mastered by Forrester Savell (Karnivool), and led by singer Charlie Powlett’s emotionally powerful delivery, every song presents a completely unique reimagining of what progressive music is capable of. The music shifts from the punk-inspired moments of 'Hanmer Street' into the gritty, futuristic soundscapes of 'Explosions After Dark', and transcendental riffs and passages of 'Introvection' - all the while effortlessly maintaining cohesive melodic bonds, resembling a sequence of dreams.

The last twelve months have seen EBONIVORY rise through the progressive ranks to become a commanding live act. A whirlwind performance at Australia’s acclaimed PROGFEST, alongside international heavyweights The Ocean (Germany), Monuments (UK) and Skyharbor (India/USA) kicked off 2019 in a big way for the Victoria, Australia quintet. They then went on to support alt-rock powerhouse Dead Letter Circus and traversed the country with progressive rock juggernaut Circles for their The Winter Tour.

The band's singles 'Patting the Black Dog' and 'Tales Of Termina' landed coverage with PROG Magazine (UK), Triple J’s The Racket, Spotify’s Homegrown + Heavy Playlist, and Rage. EBONIVORY recently toured Australia with fellow prog-scene mates Glass Ocean and were due to head to the US and Canada in May, touring with Caligula's Horse. This is now postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The band's statement: "On a bittersweet note; our North American tour with Caligula’s Horse has been postponed to January of 2021, due to the global COVID-19 crisis. Every sector of our industry is fundamentally affected, but in a time where new music is becoming crucial for morale, we’ve decided to push on with releasing this album, despite the immediate inability to perform in-person shows to support it. We’d like to sincerely thank everyone that has supported EBONIVORY thus far, and want our fans to know that we are monitoring the situation very carefully in order to organise shows at the soonest dates, without putting anyone at risk. We are still extremely excited to have the opportunity to share our music with the world!"

French melodic death unit TEMNEIN stream lyric video
Temnein-Promo-1-860x484.jpg

French melodic death metal unit TEMNEIN have released a new lyric video for the song 'The Knotted Bag', taken from their third full-length, Tales: Of Humanity And Greed, out 22nd May via Blood Blast.

Premiered via Metal Sucks, watch 'The Knotted Bag' here: https://youtu.be/9NkfeDAMunc

The band told Metal Sucks: “This track is a good representation of all the different inspirations that you can hear on the album: our Melodic Death Metal roots, the atmospheric influences (mostly from Doom/Death and Post-Metal) and some progressive elements, especially on the outro. The lyrics are inspired from an ancient Asian tale for children, so we created the video as if it was drawn by a child.”

Produced by “El Mobo” (Loudblast, ETHS, The Great Old Ones, Eryn Non Dae, etc.) at Conkrete Studio in Bordeaux, France, the engrossing ten-rack offering is thematically based on various stories, myths, and legends exploring classic childhood occidental fairy tales, unsung fables from Asia and Inuit lands, pop culture universes (ie Legend Of Zelda, Majora’s Mask, Doctor Who etc.), and so much more. Each story is linked however to a common theme: the repetition of human error and avidity across time. Musically, TEMNEIN here employs shorter song structures than previous offerings adding more dynamics to their melo-death foundation. More doom/death and post-metal influences have crept into the band’s sound consequently enhancing the overall atmosphere. The records comes swathed in the stunning artwork of Vincent Fouquet (Meshuggah, Kataklysm, Moonsorrow, Kampfar, Nordjevel etc).

Tales: Of Humanity And Greed will see a physical release by the band on 22nd May with worldwide digital distribution by Blood Blast, a new service powered by Nuclear Blast and Believe Music with preorders to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Forged in France in 2009, TEMNEIN invokes the spirits of At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Ghost Brigade, Insomnium, Opeth, In Mourning, and the like while remaining singular in their output. The band have released two prior full-lengths: 404 B.C. (2014) through Mighty Music and White Stained Inferno (2017) through Massacre Records both of which reaped critical accolades from various international metal outlets. Of White Stained Inferno, Decibel Magazine wrote in part, “In addition to a slew of driving, main riffs, TEMNEIN fit in fancy leads, licks and melodies, furious and rhythmic drumming and plenty of vocals.” Added The Metal Observer, “The band effortlessly combine melody and aggression, delivering a number of fantastic songs that will live long in the memory.”

Over their decade-plus time together, TEMNEIN has toured through Europe, the UK, Russia, and Japan, including support slots with the likes of At The Gates, Beyond Creation, Hate, Mors Principium Est, The Crown, Svart Crown, and many others. The band has performed a host of European festivals including Durbuy Rock Festival, HRH Fest, AalborgRock & Metal Fest, and Loud Farm Fest with more live invasions to be announced in the weeks to come.

HORROR DANCE SQUAD release video for new single 'Party All Life Till Our Souls Go Home'
Horror Dance Squad promo 2020.jpg

It’s been a year since Estonian six-piece HORROR DANCE SQUAD released their single 'Isn’t It Obvious' and began the next stage in their conquest of the modern metal scene. The momentum hasn't been lost as the band release their new single 'Party All Life Till Our Souls Go Home', which stays true to the band’s core while alluding to bigger and bolder things to come.

Check out the video for 'Party All Life Till Our Souls Go Home' here: https://youtu.be/f4VWLW8w8b4

The single is also available to stream or purchase here: http://smarturl.it/PartyAllLifeStream

HORROR DANCE SQUAD has been blasting stages throughout the Baltics since 2014, unapologetically blending metalcore and punk with vibrant electronics and delivering it to their audiences with unforgettable ferocity. Hailing from Tallinn, Estonia, the band shared stages with international heavy hitters such as Comeback KidDead By AprilAdeptEskimo CallboyWe Butter The Bread With ButterDeez NutsAugust Burns RedSiamese and One Morning Left. They also represented Estonia at the 2016 Wacken Open Air Metal Battle.

HORROR DANCE SQUAD has always aimed to deliver a message of positivity and hope in a genre that often feels shrouded in doom and gloom. However vocalists Karl Mesipuu and Ian Karell never shy away from tackling difficult, personal challenges in their lyrics. “Writing lyrics and making music has always been my therapy, it’s how I deal with the difficult things,” admits Ian. “Metal and punk music are perfect platforms to express the powerful emotions that come with facing the harder side of life. And lately, there have been quite a few challenges in our lives to work through.”

It is these challenges that inspired 'Party All Life Till Our Souls Go Home'. “Despite the uncertainty, fear and pain that can overwhelm us, humanity has never ceased in our eternal search for meaning and comfort in the madness. The story of humanity is the story of search. The search for something bigger than us, the search for the reason we are here,” he adds. This sentiment is echoed in the song’s chorus when the co-vocalists switch from their rougher vocal styles to cry out, as if to the universe itself, “We’re dying to know, just how little do we know / So give us a chance to catch just a glance into the wealth of the unknown.”

But the song offers a solution as well. In the heavier moments, they bring the responsibility back to all of us with the straightforward question: What the hell are we gonna do about it? “It’s like I’m yelling at myself to not give up,” Ian explains. “No matter how much faith one has, many things remain in doubt. But it’s up to us to make the most of this doubt. It’s our responsibility to live the lives that fulfil us.”

Karl continues, “Although I have never had a strong faith, I have always had a connection to spirituality through going to church or studying philosophies from Buddhism and other eastern religions. Through time, I have learned that I don’t have to believe in a god in order to believe that life has an inherent meaning and that we have to work towards bringing good to the world. While the screaming in this song is an expression of frustration towards losing touch with my inner self, I hope it to be a reminder and a wake up call of hope to people who hear this song. In a way this song is like a prayer to a god that may or may not exist. That we want to believe in, even if we’re not sure the prayers will ever get answered.”

HORROR DANCE SQUAD have had to cancel numerous upcoming shows due to the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, the band will perform a live show on YouTube for fans around the world on 28th March. Find out more here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1208311086211464/

AZUSA (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Extol, Sea + Air members and more) stream new single
Pictures by Simon Skreddernes (1)resize.jpg

The avant-metal group AZUSA (The Dillinger Escape Plan, John FrumExtolSea + Air) have released their new single 'Kill/Destroy', their final single before the release of forthcoming LP, Loop Of Yesterdays, released 10th April via Indie Recordings / Solid State Records

Stream 'Kill/Destroy' here: https://orcd.co/azusakilldestroy

Pre-order the record: http://bit.ly/2u2ZYju
Pre-save: https://azusa.ffm.to/album

In the words of the band, "'Kill/Destroy' was the last song to be composed in the Loop of Yesterdays session. We felt like the album needed some more 'kick in the teeth' punk/hardcore energy to round things out. The song was an obvious curtain-raiser, so we opened our live set with it on tour last summer as a sneak peek of the new album. Easily digestible yet appropriately unpredictable, 'Kill/Destroy' balances raw, thrash-inspired riffing with straight-forward lyrics about transgression and our inner demons being forced to awaken. Confrontational and blunt, 'Kill/Destroy' is peak AZUSA."

Loop Of Yesterdays is the follow-up to 2018's critically acclaimed Heavy Yoke. Although equally broad in scope, Loop Of Yesterdays finds the band with more to say but less to prove, achieving a more aerodynamic and accessible approach to their intricate sense of song-writing and inherently technical style. Expanding on ideas first presented on 2018’s album Heavy YokeAZUSA seek to captivate audiences with their unique blend of melodic-thrash, jazz-fusion, hardcore and early 90’s riff pop sensibilities. This is accompanied by lyrics which assertively confront coming of age struggles, like loss, grief, memories and estrangement. Bassist Liam Wilson says, “Heavy Yoke was the initial impact, Loop Of Yesterdays is the aftermath.”

“The line “cannot lose myself in a loop of yesterdays” was inspired by an eerie dream I had and became a recurring reminder for me. I had been out of focus for a long time that I wanted to get back to reality, to the present.” says vocalist Eleni Zafiriadou

Anxious to continue where they left off, the band found themselves returning to drummer and producer-engineer David Husvik’s Hawk Studios in Oslo, Norway to record Loop Of Yesterdays, which was masterminded by long-time collaborators David Husvik and guitarist Christer Espevoll, and recorded in a series of marathon sessions that started before their previous album even left the pressing plant. The band once again called upon Nick Terry (Serena Maneesh, Kvelertak, Turbonegro) to achieve their ideal mix, a highly polished balance of punch and aggression, giving mastering engineer Jens Bogren (Opeth, At The Gates, Between The Buried And Me) a pitch he could knock out of the park. Intrigued by his ability to exist comfortably in both the jazz and metal world, the band reached out to world-class guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament) to contribute a shredding guest solo on the track 'Detach'. The album artwork was provided by internationally acclaimed German artist Klaus Rinke from his work titled “Um mich herum - Wasser holen, Wasser bringen, Wasser schütten”.

Loop of Yesterdays will be released via Solid State Records in North America and Asia, and via Indie Recordings in the rest of the world on 10th April.

AZUSA are:

Liam Wilson - Bass
Eleni Zafiriadou - Vocals
Christer Espevoll - Guitars

PICTURESQUE announce new album Do You Feel O.K? and reveal new single 'ATTN:'
Picturesque_MegShanks_300dpi.jpg

PICTURESQUE have announced their sophomore album Do You Feel O.K?, due for release on 24th April 2020 via Rude Records/Equal Vision Records. For fans of Sleeping With SirensIssues and Normandie, the quartet have also released their new single 'ATTN:'.

Check out 'ATTN:' here: https://youtu.be/nuXdFh5c5sY

Pre-order Do You Feel O.K? here: http://www.picturesque.merchnow.com/

We write a lot of sad songs, but we wanted this one to be different,” the band shares. “It’s a song where Kyle is in control of the narrative. We wanted it to have a strong groove and to make it as catchy as possible. We experimented with a lot of different sounds on this song and finally convinced Dylan to lay down an epic solo.

They continue: “We are just trying to push the boundaries of what Picturesque can be. Our writing sessions have no rules and we wanted to show that side of us. This song is carefree, fun, and a side we don’t normally show.

Kentucky natives PICTURESQUE are a band intent on doing things differently. Born out of a post-hardcore scene that’s often characterised more by aggression than accessibility, the five-piece steadfastly refuse to be boxed or pigeonholed, and they’re set on embracing musical tropes not traditionally associated with heavy music.

There was certainly a good deal of excitement when PICTURESQUE burst onto the scene with debut full-length Back To Beautiful in 2017. It was an album that introduced the band’s unique approach to songwriting and blend of heavy rock with pop sensibility, whilst it also showcased the star quality of frontman Hollis, whose impressive vocal range and melodic delivery enhanced the potency of Back To Beautiful’s songs. Three years on and following successful tours with Escape The FateSilverstein and Tonight AlivePICTURESQUE are back with new album Do You Feel O.K?. But whilst their distinctive musical approach remains, as vocalist Kyle Hollis outlines, there’s much about this album that’s very different to what’s come before.

"The first record was our take on 2009 post-hardcore, whereas this album is something new, and it’s a style of music I’ve not heard anyone else make,” he states. “Approaching Do You Feel O.K?, we reached a point where we just thought, ‘Fuck it, we’re not going to box ourselves in––we’re going to focus on writing killer songs, no matter what they sound like.’ You can hear that attitude throughout the record.

He’s not wrong. Do You Feel O.K? radiates with a carpe-diem approach to songwriting fuelled by its creators’ desire to bring something new to the table. Combining Hollis and guitarist Zach Williamson’s love of Post Malone and Blackbear with fellow shredder Dylan Forrester’s metallic edge, songs like opening track ‘Necessary’ and the melody-driven ‘ATTN:’ are modern rock epics that pay tribute to the PICTURESQUE's post-hardcore roots, all the while showcasing a joyous eclecticism and fondness for more mainstream-friendly sounds. The intro to ‘Swipe’, meanwhile, is pure hip-hop escapism that eventually gives way to a titanic rock chorus. Do You Feel O.K? is teaming with ideas, but on top of being a technical success, there’s an emotional core that ties its eleven tracks together.

There’s no denying that Do You Feel O.K? is an album with a dark heart, but whilst its lyrics speak of emotional despair and romantic despondency, so too do they provide the listener with a sense of hope and shared experience, taking an honest look at what it means to be a young person finding their way in a world shrouded in doubt. It’s a smart, forward-thinking and innovative record that opens up limitless possibilities for the future of its creators, and a picture-perfect example of a young band operating at the top of its game.

PICTURESQUE will tour throughout the US with Secrets in April as part of The New Decade Tour Part 1. Later this year they will be joining Scary Kids Scaring Kids on The City Sleeps In Flames 15th anniversary tour.
