Polish shamanic doom band SUNNATA announce new album Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth
SUNNATA_2021_003_C_Peter_Sadowski.jpg

Feral wilderness prophets SUNNATA (sanskr. noun emptiness, voidness), a four-piece Warsaw-based shamanic doom metal band are set to release their fourth full-length album Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth on 26th February. Ahead of this the band have also unveiled a visualiser for their hypnotic first single 'Crows'.

SUNNATA comments: "The song tells the story of people giving their life for faith. Convinced they are fighting the blind, they are all equal when the death comes. Crows are observers aware of change - the only constant in the universe. Ravens and crows were frequently found on battlefields, feeding from corpses. That’s why crows in various mythologies are considered harbingers of doom. But they also bring the power of foresight to those who work with them. Diviners, seers and sages alike believed that the crow spirit could see through time and past the veils into spaces and places often hidden to humans. The crow as an animal spirit guide does not fear change. Does not fear the new."

A ritualistic, meditatively uplifting, doom soundscape, Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth is a sensuous, ever-mutating musical experience. SUNNATA produce a pulsating mystic dirge which shimmers with odd beauty and uplifting melodies. The result is an atmosphere of sacred submission immersed in huge dynamics for the duration of the album’s 46-minute expanse.

Thematically the album explores different angles of religious fanaticism. Burning in Heaven, Melting On Earth questions the sacrifice of individual-self and the general sense of trusting your life to a crystal ethereal being represented by humans of flesh, bones and sins, and discusses consequences of doing so.

SUNNATA comments: "The new album can be perceived as a journey of consciousness. We pass through our lives driven by blind faith and false leaders, keeping our goals outside the reach until we die convinced that the time has come, while in reality it is long gone. An individual who follows this path will never fully contribute to society and will never be able to share his love in a healthy way."

SUNNATA have been paving their own way to higher metal skies since their 2014 debut Climbing The Colossus. Their spellbinding sophomore album Zorya (2016) made the band gather even more momentum with regard to the European alternative heavy scene. Third album Outlands (2018) brilliantly brought out even more ritual in the heavy, confidently crossing the frontier of progressive doom to land in even more melancholic and mind-expanding alleys.

Known from their expressive and atmospheric live performances, SUNNATA has already taken part in various international festivals and been invited to open for Mastodon, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, The Sword, Sleep, Kylesa, Ufomammut and Rotting Christ.

Returning in 2021 with Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth, SUNNATA are at their most transcendent, melding together all the heaviness, intensity and tenderness into a graceful, cross pollinating form to create something incredible that demands attention and respect. From here SUNNATA are free to roam wherever.

SUNNATA will appear at Freak Valley Festival (Germany) and Grom Festival (Estonia) in 2021. More dates to follow.

British Alt-Rockers THE HYENA KILL announce new album A Disconnect

THE HYENA KILL, a brooding, emotive rock band from Manchester, have released their new single ‘Bleached’, a hard-hitting track about pure obsession. The track is the first taken from the forthcoming new album A Disconnect, which will see release via APF Records on 5th March 2021.

Stream/buy it online and add to your playlists here:
Spotify - https://bit.ly/THKBleached
Apple - https://apple.co/3mFPNIo

Pre-order A Disconnect here: https://apfrecords.co.uk/shop

With the single, the THE HYENA KILL announce the addition of two new members, Sam Jones (guitar/synths) and Charlie Seisay (bass), expanding from a duo to a ferocious-sounding four-piece. These new additions help take their already expansive sound to another level, allowing the band more room in which to create and paving the way for a new era of THE HYENA KILL

Comments vocalist/guitarist Steven Dobb“This is one of my favourite tracks on the album. It was written in about half an hour, a pure 'lightning in a bottle moment'. Simple, aggressive and straight to the point, it’s a song about pure obsession. I’ve always thought about it like a daydream of sorts - a fantasy of words you would never say out loud, or actions that you would never perform but through a lens of obsession and self-destruction. Really looking forward to playing this one live.’

New album A Disconnect is a bleak, intense masterpiece that attempts to find reconciliation of personal trauma and pain, creating a distinctive area where spaciousness can be heavy and contact is always uncomfortable.

Dobb’s explains: “The bulk of material was written during a very low point in my life, and as a result this album fell into place with a sense of claustrophobia and finality, of being trapped in a hospital bed, linked up to life support, unable to regain your own agency and escape the situation you find yourself in. Of being bound by the traumas of the past that you’re unable to cast away, and ultimately feeling suffocated by them. Wanting to escape and be absolutely anywhere - or anyone - else. These are lyrics that deal with and focus on uncomfortable subjects that were dominating my life at the time of writing. The words and movements in this record are mostly without resolution. There are no happy endings or moments of clarity.”

The result is an album that presents a dichotomy of softness/harshness with an earnestness that never relents over the course of ten tracks, but becomes transformative with repeated listens. Brimming with emotion and at times ethereal wonder, Steven Dobb’s vocals are extraordinarily impassioned and present whilst Lorna Blundell’s drums offer relentless dexterity with a wild, dirty earthiness. With each track comes the chance of an emotive journey to the extremes of existence, there’s a real push-pull between each musical element as Sam Jones’ razor riffs explode like fireworks, flooding the room with light whilst Charlie Seisay’s driving bass underpins each vast soundscape. Elements of Deftones, Nirvana and Chelsea Wolfe combine on a dynamic LP that terrifies, haunts and inspires all at once, a key element of why THE HYENA KILL continue to sound exciting and alive.

Drawn together by a shared love of Queens of the Stone Age, Deftones, Helmet and Tool, Steven Dobb (vocals / guitar) and Lorna Blundell (drums) announced THE HYENA KILL’s arrival in 2012 with the release of the explosive Gush EP, four tracks of searing, coruscating distort-pop which exploded like a nail bomb into the subterranean noise scene. Via 2014’s Scrape My Bones EP and two further singles, 'Suck It Up' and 2015’s thrilling double-header 'Still Sick / Blisters' –the duo refined, honed and focused their fierce alternative rock sound into something harsher, leaner and altogether nastier. The result was their debut album Atomised (2016), an unflinching, brutal dissection of what it means to be skint, frustrated, alienated and adrift in modern Britain. This was followed up by the searing, gnarly yet majestic Spun EP (2018).

With the release of A Disconnect the band are positioned to take a journey into unfamiliar territory and are as emotional as they’ve ever sounded. Opening up their inner world of proximity and intimacy THE HYENA KILL’s personal scars are fully on display, ready to drag listeners down into their turmoil and testament to the fact that they kept on going, even when it started to hurt. This is an album to truly sink into and once you attune to its escapism and caustic brutality, everything about it is wondrous.

THE HYENA KILL will appear at Arctangent Festival in 2021. More dates to follow.

CRO-MAGS stream new video for '2020'
unnamed - 2020-12-02T161649.238.jpg

The legendary CRO-MAGS have released the new video for '2020' the title-track of their forthcoming six-song EP 2020, available worldwide digitally on 11th December via Arising Empire.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/k5EXYJS89n8
Pre-order the new EP digitally: https://Cro-Mags.lnk.to/2020
Stream / purchase the title-track '2020' here: https://Cro-Mags.lnk.to/2020single

CRO-MAGS were scheduled to go on tour in support of their previous album In The Beginning in the summer of 2020, booked solid throughout Europe, UK, Japan and South America. All was set to kick-off with a show at Webster Hall (NYC) with Body Count on 15th March - when suddenly the Coronavirus quarantine went into effect, and the year of madness began. In response, CRO-MAGS pivoted, performing one of the very first live stream shows, “The Quarantine Show”, from the historic (and now defunct) SIR Studios in Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood.

As Flanagan recounts, “(Drummer) G-Man was stuck in New York for seven months because of the travel ban, so we started writing songs, and as soon as we were able to get into the studio we started tracking.” Recorded at Steve Zing's (Sam Hain, Danzig) newly launched Trick or Treat Studio, they brought back Arthur Rizk who produced In The Beginning.

Rocky George managed to get out of NYC before the lockdown in March and tracked his guitars in Los Angeles. Guitarist Gabby Abularach remained in Guatemala during the travel ban and decided that both personally and professionally he was in need of a change and to move in ‘a different direction.’

Aware of the quarantine and travel ban, CRO-MAGS asked long-time friend Joseph Affe (M.O.D, Maximum Penalty, Harley's War) to play "The Quarantine Show". Joe had just toured Europe and the U.K with CRO-MAGS in late 2019 when Rocky couldn't make the trip. Harley had played with Joe on and off since 2003 in different projects and it was a perfect fit, so CRO-MAGS brought Affe on to do the EP. After all the years, playing the entire catalogue and having so recently filled in for both Rocky and Gabby, it was seamless.

The record itself is unintentionally 20 minutes and 20 seconds, and plays as a time-capsule look into the burning dumpster fire of this year.

CRO-MAGS founder Harley Flanagan explains, “Just by coincidence we recorded 20 minutes and 16 seconds of music, so we simply added a few seconds of real-world chaos. The album cover is meant to look like a calendar - seven squares across, with one picture from 2020 per day. Inside the booklet there are 12 pictures, one for each month of 2020; and the back is a shot of something I have never seen before in my life - a totally empty New York City. Coronavirus, quarantine, empty streets, brutality, burning buildings, violence and destruction: 2020 is a year none of us will ever forget.”

2020 tracklist:
1 - Age Of Quarantine
2 - 2020
3 - Life On Earth
4 - Violence and Destruction
5 - Chaos In The Streets
6 - Cro-Fusion

“Fast punk and thrashy breakdowns” - DECIBEL
“The founding band of hardcore punk” - ROLLING STONE
“Fast-paced, raw, blazing and blistering” - CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND
“This one’s gonna snap a few bones and blacken an eye” - NEW NOISE
“A two-stepping salute to four-chord classic hardcore” - METAL HAMMER
“Heavy grooves, impressive depth and really powerful” - DOWN FOR LIFE
“A hybrid of ‘80s and ‘90s anthemic hardcore full of underlying anger” - BLABBERMOUTH

Norwegian sextet HEAVE BLOOD & DIE stream new single
Heave Blood & Die 2020 Credit Brage Pedersen.jpg

Norwegian anti-capitalist experimentalist sextet HEAVE BLOOD & DIE have released their new single 'Metropolitan Jam', taken from their new record, Post People, to be released 5th February via Fysisk Format.

A searing anti-capitalist critique, laying waste to non-justified authority, Post People will be released on recycled vinyl. Pre-order the record and stream 'Metropolitan Jam' here: https://smarturl.it/HBAD

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/2Zg35DDNcDA

'Metropolitan Jam' follows previous single 'Radio Silence', which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTbxGUOU61c

HEAVE BLOOD & DIE are a group from Tromsø, Norway, the far northern reaches of Europe - a land under the aurora borealis, with midnight sun and never-ending winters.

The group's early memories and close affinity to nature have informed their worldview - a staunchly environmentalist, progressive outlook which runs deeply throughout Post People. We are standing on the verge of a junction with two options: ruin, or the chance of redemption. In the words of the band: "The have had is more dangerous than the never had. A new dawn is rising, and the possible outcome is terrifying".

HEAVE BLOOD & DIE's anti-capitalist ethos is leading them toward their most expressive album yet - a fine combination of experimental rock, post-metal, post-punk and raw expression. Elements of Jesu, Solstafir, Årabrot and Killing Joke meld together to create a truly satisfying assertion of self. Fiercely proud and opinionated, the group stand for a better future, one which we can all hope for.

HEAVE BLOOD & DIE have already caught the attention of many in their home country, and have played at Roskilde Festival and Tons of Rock, among others. Post People is mixed by Graham Walsh (Holy F*ck, METZ, Viet Cong) and mastered by Paul Gold (Angel Olsen, Preoccupations, Beach House).

MARISA AND THE MOTHS release new video, 'How Did You Get So Weak?'
unnamed - 2020-12-02T112730.068.jpg

Grunge rockers MARISA AND THE MOTHS have released their new video 'How Did You Get So Weak?', the culmination of their "Time To Talk" campaign, raising awareness and supporting victims of physical, mental and financial domestic abuse.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/Mpv1hqU2Yo4

'How Did You Get So Weak?' can be purchased with a special merch bundle, from which 50% of the proceeds will be donated to DASH (https://thedashcharity.org.uk), a charity with a mission to end domestic abuse and support victims.

Purchase: https://www.marisaandthemoths.com/merch

"Time To Talk" featured an interview series, where Marisa talked to fans who have been victims of abuse, sharing their stories on social media via videos, and released them daily until the release of the video.

Her first interview was with DASH about the work they do, and all interviews can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/marisaandthemoths

The campaign was launched on White Ribbon Day (https://www.whiteribbon.org.uk/day), an internationally recognised day that urges people to stand up, speak out and say no to violence against women. This year is more important than ever with a significant increase in violence, harassment, and abuse during the coronavirus pandemic.

As a survivor, Marisa knows first-hand how damaging an abusive experience can be. She comments: “'How Did You Get So Weak?' is the question that I asked myself at the start of what ended up being an extremely traumatic relationship. I knew that there was something wrong at the time, but because of various reasons I felt too scared to leave. Now I’m on the other side of this situation, I’d really like to use the release of this song to help others.”

Not only did her experience inspire new music, it gave her the idea to set up "Time To Talk". She continues: “I’m running the “Time To Talk” campaign to help raise awareness and understanding for the issue of domestic abuse (which includes mental, physical and financial abuse). There is a lot of negative stigma around discussing the topic, but we seriously need to start talking about it. Due to the isolation effects caused by the pandemic, this year has seen a significant increase in domestic violence, harassment, and abuse during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Abuse can happen to anyone. Men, women, and children. I want to let the victims know that they can get out, they are not alone, and they will be stronger for it in the end. But most importantly, that they are NOT weak, they are a victim and there is help for them out there.

“The “Time To Talk” campaign will involve live interviews with me and various victims of abuse who have come forward to share their stories to raise awareness, with intent to hopefully inspire others in abusive situations to reach out and get the help that they need. These stories will be shared as video interviews, letter readings and phone calls on our social media platforms every day, on the run up to our music video release for our single ‘How Did You Get So Weak?’"

Commenting on the charity, Marisa concludes: “DASH is an incredible charity working to help victims of domestic abuse, including women, men and children of all backgrounds.”

Tech-metalcore quintet PROSPECTIVE release new single / video

Italian progressive metalcore quintet PROSPECTIVE share new single / video 'Dust and Memories', taken from new album All We Have, out now via Long Branch Records.

Watch the video to 'Dust and Memories' here: https://youtu.be/FG58ssdiPjo

The digital two-track single also features a reimagined version of 'Dust and Memories' and can be streamed here: https://Prospective.lnk.to/dustandmemories

"I wrote this song shortly after my grandmother died," says guitarist Luca Zini. "It can be considered a love song, even if it speaks of family love between grandmother and grandchild. It's very intimate and aggressive at the same time as I tried to mix all the emotions that bereavement can arouse in a person. Listen to it with open ears and an open heart as well."

Drummer Flavio Cacciari adds his thoughts about the reimagined version of 'Dust and Memories': "This is a special song for us, it talks about the loss of someone special and we think this version delivers the right feelings of that. We decided to do this reimagined version right after completing the original one. We instantly saw the potential and the song's vibe is perfect for such transformation. The result is a super emotional roller coaster that lets the tears go down."

AllWeHave_3000px_digital.jpg

All We Have is the result of countless nights spent shaping their unique sound, trying to achieve the perfect combination of melody, tones, attitude and feel. The songs are straightforward and hard-hitting with no remorse, combining abrasive guitar tones, heavy riffs, gnarly breakdowns, catchy choruses and unexpected melodies. The album is completed with a mix finished to perfection by Buster Odeholm and mastering engineer Ermin Hamidovic.

Following on from the more technical and less emotionally driven sophomore album Unreal, All We Have is new chapter for PROSPECTIVE, and a chance to explore the deepest and strongest experiences and traumas that have inspired the album. There is a clear evolution in heaviness, with more thoughtful choruses but with more attention to song structures. This is a band packed with passion and a lot to say, and all the riffs and breakdowns to back it up.

PROSPECTIVE are:

LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT series announced
unnamed - 2020-11-30T120450.310.jpg

The most exciting outdoor event in rock has today been launched: LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT is a livestream concert film series, deep in the heart of the California wilderness, with performances from Earthless, Nebula, Spirit Mother, Mountain Tamer, and Stoner.

Tickets are available to purchase now: http://cdwa.tixr.com

Individual concert tickets will be available as well as discounted series passes.

Watch the teaser here.

Schedule:

EARTHLESS: Saturday 23rd January, 2021
NEBULA: Saturday 6th February, 2021
SPIRIT MOTHER: Saturday 20th February, 2021
MOUNTAIN TAMER: Saturday 6th March, 2021
STONER (Brant Bjork + Ryan Gut + Nick Oliveri): Saturday 20th March, 2021

Inspired by Pink Floyd's iconic Live At Pompeii film, each of the concert films will be premiered online, and presented in a two-hour long live, hosted program. Some of the biggest desert rock legends will be on set attending and hosting, and the bands themselves will join the stream.

Each film will be released as a live album, with LP, CD, and DVD pre-orders to be announced soon. The project is presented by CDWA Records (California Desert Wizards Association) who have strived to present the best in the desert rock scene, and introduce some of the most exciting new talent.

The project includes new band STONER, a trio of Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork (Kyuss), with Ryan Gut on drums.

Brant Bjork comments: "CDWA once again commits to the ultimate Rock n Roll experience for the fans and the bands regardless of what might stand in the way. Covid literally shut down live performance around the world... what do you do? You use your imagination and you go all in. Congrats to CDWA and all the bands and crew involved in this Rock n Roll response of light in this year of concert stage darkness."

On the formation of STONER and playing with Nick once again: "I remember playing Ramones songs with Nick in his mom’s living room in Palm Desert when we were kids. Nick and I have roots that go deep. Together again as the appropriately named STONER. A testament to our collective and individual dedication to our past, our present and our future Rock n Roll."

Nick Oliveri comments: "Well I think that California Desert Wizards Association is doing a great thing and a new thing under the circumstances of COVID-19, because what I do for a living stopped cold, dead in its tracks. I feel the powers that be are trying to stop and kill music or live music and I believe Dr. Jones is doing a great thing by keeping it alive. We need more people like him coming forward. Let me add, what a cool original idea - live stream while releasing a live record. For a collector like myself this is a great thing! Big cigars and cold beers to CDWA records. RnR will never die."

CDWA have implemented a custom link program which gives a portion of sales to their affiliates who sell tickets to the shows. They're creating a network of clubs, promoters, record stores and venues across the globe to help support the musical scene in this more desperate of years.

If you're interested in joining, please get in touch here.

To support your local participating venue, buy through their link. More information to follow.

There is no overestimating the level of undertaking on show in the LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT series. Driving tonnes of gear 30 miles out into the desert to film five bands in four days, with 25 people onsite daily - the level of effort shows in a stunning range of unique musical experiences.

In the words of Earthless' Mario Rubalcaba: "Setting up and playing our jams loudly out in the Mojave desert at night with Mad Alchemy's lightshow all around us will forever be a really great memory. I wonder how many animals were listening? Happy it was documented."

CDWA's Ryan Jones' statement: "This was a major undertaking to bring this many people and this much gear out to a very remote desert location. Including the bands we had 25 people onsite daily. Generators. Meals. Tacos. Burgers. Vegan food. Water. Coffee. Weed, Beer & Booze. Camping gear. Handwashing. Covid prevention plans. Portapots. Stage lights. Liquid light show. Full Sound System. So much cable to bury. Backline. Pro Tools Recording System. Computers. Cameras. Drones. Bands. Backline. Everything that came in had to go out, of course. With only one road in, all of these people and all of this stuff had to come up a half mile long hill of deep desert sand; 30 miles from nowhere. We had to hire local desert guys with huge 4x4 pickups to tow things up, tow things down, shuttle the bands, shuttle their gear, guitars, drums, and occasionally to rescue our vehicles. It was insane, but we did it for the love of the project and we really wanted to see our favorite bands play again!"

Punk rock duo BROOZER release video for new single 'The Way I Like It'
Broozer 2020 Resize.JPG

Punk rock duo BROOZER have released a video for their new single 'The Way I Like It'. The track is taken from their forthcoming EP Average At Best, due for release on 11th December.

Influenced by the likes of Idles, Nirvana and The Damned, BROOZER's new single is packed with fuzz-laden riffs and a stomping chorus.

Watch the video for 'The Way I Like It' here: https://youtu.be/7lTuaflS7Xc

Stream/purchase 'The Way I Like It' here: https://snd.click/m0npaqfw

Formed in 2018, Wolverhampton two-piece BROOZER released their debut single 'Son Of Man', which was quickly followed by their 2019 debut EP Are We Dead Yet?. The band went on to play numerous shows in support of the EP, building their live reputation at local grassroots venues across the Black Country and West Midlands.

Earlier this year BROOZER released two new singles, 'Puppet' and 'Taste For Blood', before entering the studio to work on their upcoming EP, Average At Best. The four-track record was written during the COVID-19 lockdown and displays a mature, well-rounded sound, not constrained by one particular genre.

The duo explain: “We wrote most of the EP during lockdown, however it’s not necessarily influenced by it. We didn’t want it to be a pandemic-themed record either, as we felt this was already being done by other musicians at the time. It’s about people you meet throughout your life, in particular those who leave an impression on you for better or worse, and those who struggle to appreciate their self value.”
