The group - Ross Drummond (vocals and guitar), Matt Rebeiro (drums) and Peter Hakola (bass and vocals) - formed at a chance meeting at a pub quiz hosted by ex-Coronation Street star Martin Hancock, almost certainly the only band in the world to have this claim to fame.

Cheap Meat had already kicked up a fuss with their hook-filled, guitar-heavy The Parts That Show EP and subsequent single 'Spin-Offs'. Some years on they now return with People Are The Worst, an LP which has been created despite significant setbacks.

The theme of the record is misanthrope; the story, DIY.

People Are The Worst was mostly written during a time of significant sociopolitical unrest – Brexit debates at their peak, Trump being, well, Trump, and culture wars on left and right of increasing hysteria. The band's refrain became the title of the LP.

The specific context and themes of the record are rooted in the day-to-day unpleasantness the band found themselves involved in – which is captured in the album artwork, a series of microaggressions all claustrophobically close together in a high-rise apartment block.

It’s taken a long time for CHEAP MEAT to get their heads around releasing People Are The Worst. In the span between the EP release and now, Matt’s had two kids, Pete was diagnosed with manic depression/bi-polar disorder, and Ross was diagnosed with high-functioning depression and anxiety. Safe to say the group have been through the ringer: emotionally, physically and creatively.

Despite the challenges, People Are The Worst is the record the band wanted to make, on their own terms, and is released on their own label, Jerk Store Records.

Despite too, People being The Worst, some are the best – not least the crew of friends and creative contacts CHEAP MEAT relied on to make their record.

There are plenty of moments of light and love throughout the LP. Musically, as a counterpoint to the bleakest lyrical moments, the album delivers a sonically upbeat palette, delivering poppy hooks and air-guitar-euphoria. Clocking in at only 30 minutes or so, People Are The Worst is here for a good time, not a long time.

CHEAP MEAT have previously received acclaim from Kerrang!, Rock Sound and Upset, and supported Bob Mould, Frank Iero, Tellison, Lonely The Brave, We Are The Ocean, and have performed at 2000 Trees and The Great Escape festivals, among others.

Norwegian punks LÜT release new video and celebrate album release

Norwegian punks LÜT have finally released their praised new album Mersmak (12th February, 2021, via Indie Recordings).

In celebration of release day the quintet have also released their atmospheric new video 'INDIÄ'. Watch 'INDIÄ' here: https://youtu.be/Yo_ENQaoIUs

Purchase Mersmak here: https://orcd.co/mersmak

Praised by Kerrang! and Metal Hammer, Mersmak is an irresistible, infectious 35-minute party.

Mersmak roughly translates as 'Taste for more / Wanting more', a fitting title for this infectiously raucous group. Elements of Turbonegro, Blood Command, Kvelertak and more combine to exhilarating and beguiling effect, and cements the band's rising status as ones to watch following their critically acclaimed debut Pandion (2017).

Ever since their foundation, LÜT have been a band that have captivated rock audiences, making a name for themselves in Norway. With their debut album, LÜT were nominated for 'New Band of the Year' in both the Norwegian Grammys Spellemannprisen and the Norwegian Radio award show P3 Gull. They have also found a fan in Lars Ulrich, who praised them on his podcast 'It’s Electric'. The band have also recently played at Summer Breeze Open Air, Reeperbahn, Øya and Tons Of Rock, as well as several other Norwegian festivals.

"We went through highs and lows writing this album, and it was definitely a learning process which made the band stronger as a whole. As such; making this album has been a type of contemplation. We’re excited to have finished the ‘difficult second album’ and couldn’t have hoped for a better result. It’s great to finally be able to show the world what we’ve been working on,” says vocalist Markus Danjord.

The band have made some changes to the line-up in the last year, as guitarist Mads Ystmark (Heave Blood & Die) has replaced former members Hans Marius Mikkelsen and Viljar Ratama Dunderovic. Following this change, LÜT spent months in Norway and abroad, finishing their second album.

Mersmak was mixed by Mike Schuppan (Paramore, M83, Jimmy Eat World), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Converge, Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein Stranger Things Soundtracks), and recorded in Giske and Tromsø, Norway, and Bronson Island in Los Angeles, USA.

Finnish melodeath sextet BLOODRED HOURGLASS release video for new single 'Drag Me The Rain'
Bloodred Hourglass - Photo by Outi Puhakka - Outokuva.jpg

Finnish melodic death metallers BLOODRED HOURGLASS return with their long-awaited single 'Drag Me The Rain'. The track marks the band's first new music since their 2019 album Godsend and offers a tantalising glimpse into the sextet's upcoming album, which is due for release later this year via Out Of Line Music.

Check out the video for 'Drag Me The Rain' here: https://youtu.be/kEba9KgIBcw

Stream/purchase 'Drag Me The Rain' here: https://bloodredhourglass.lnk.to/DragmetheRain

Vocalist Jarkko Koukonen comments:

"'Drag Me the Rain' is the first song Eero wrote for us when he joined the production of the upcoming album. Very straightforward type of banger with some refreshed catchiness and rudeness, and it also carries the vibe it will strike live as well. 'Fear is contagious, but so is courage.'

"Lyrically it's going to be by far the most personal album to date. It's an introspective trip into loss, lost chances of life and love - all crowned with sadness. You get a lot closer by being also fragile, and the contrast we managed to capture on this record is definitely some next level
BRHG."

BLOODRED HOURGLASS' new album is expected to be a melodic death metal rollercoaster, with an epic feel and a very modern approach.

"Musically it's the most diverse BRHG album we've created. It contains our slowest song ever but also the most aggressive headbanger too. It's filled with sadness and joy, brutality and catchiness - a perfect melodeath rollercoaster just the way we wanted it to be," states guitarist Lauri Silvonen.

Previous album Godsend saw BLOODRED HOURGLASS climb towards the top of the Finnish metal scene, with their signature blend of melodic death and thrash metal. Stay tuned for more details on the band's upcoming album.

BLOODRED HOURGLASS are:

Jarkko Koukonen - vocals
Jarkko Hyvönen - drums
Jose Moilanen - bass
Lauri Silvonen - guitar
Joni Lahdenkauppi - guitar

Atmospheric rock collective SOM release new single / video 'Youth // Decay'
SOM_2020_3000x2000px.jpg

Atmospheric rock collective SOM – comprised of current and former members of Constants, Junius, and recent Grammy nominees Caspian – have released new single / video 'Youth // Decay'.

Taken from their new EP, Awake, due out 12th March via Pelagic Records, watch the video for 'Youth // Decay' here: https://youtu.be/jK2krbI6Uj8

Will Benoit (vocals / guitars) commented on the track: “Before the first SOM record was done, Mike Repasch-Nieves (guitars) and I were both feeling creatively and musically adrift. We got together for a couple days, recording ambient guitar and synths over glitchy beats in an attempt to change things up. Two years later when Mike and Joel joined the band, I edited some of Mike’s demo parts from that session to form the main melodies in 'Youth // Decay.' I arranged the chords and vocals, and brought it to the group. During quarantine, we all passed the demo back and forth. Slowly, this minimal, sparse piece of music grew into a dynamic, crushing song that is also the first track we finished as a five-piece.”

On the video, Mike Repasch-Nieves (guitar) continues “Similarly, the video started as a short film that my friend and long-time colleague, director Adam Patch, had been working on. As soon as we finished the song, I knew it would be perfect for this, lyrically and thematically. We shared the song and footage with editor Samia Zaidi (who also directed our recent video for 'Awake // Sedate'); she took it and really brought everything into focus. It was quite serendipitous how it all came together in this way.”

Watch previous single / video 'Awake // Sedate' here: https://youtu.be/RcwyLCipWdc

Combining two exclusive originals with remixes by beloved collaborators Holy Fawn, Hisself (Johnny Dang of O’Brother), U Dye (Marshall Gallagher of Teenage Wrist), and Giuseppe Capolupo (The Devil Wears Prada), the short collection is a triumph of self-described “heavy dream pop.” Its concise compositions balance the gritty riffs of Deftones with airy, Tame Impala-esque vocal lines, just as primed for rock radio success as they are for shoegaze-loving connoisseurs. “Our past projects were very exploratory,” explains drummer Duncan Rich. “With SOM, it’s a lot more focused. Creating in a pandemic has imposed limits – it’s a test of working within boundaries. How do we make something expansive, yet digestible and impactful?” The tracks are part of SOM’s ongoing mission to “leave this place better than we found it.”

More information on SOM:

Duncan Rich co-founded SOM with frontman and former Constants colleague Will Benoit, as well as Adai founder and now-Caspian drummer Justin Forrest. While touring on The Fall in 2019, the band added guitarists Mike Repasch-Nieves and Joel M. Reynolds, both formerly of Junius and Driftoff. “We’ve always been a musical family,” Rich adds.

Repasch-Nieves continues, “Will and I started a label, Radar Recordings, in Boston during the early 2000s, which was an amazing time and place for music. It was very much a collective of like-minded artists, which grew as we all toured around the world together in the years to follow.” The alluring Awake is far from the five longtime friends’ only endeavour to create a better world around them. Despite being recorded in quarantine, the EP was mixed by Benoit at his own Radar Studio in Connecticut – New England’s first solar-powered recording facility. Repasch-Nieves and Reynolds, meanwhile, spent 2020 sustaining an urban farm in New York City, while Forrest distributed vegan food to Black Lives Matter activists in Denver through the Summer. Equally philanthropic is Rich, who now uses his production experience to host emotional fluency events for men. While many musicians lumbered in inactivity, SOM used the darkness of recent times to create and heal. Awake’s bliss is an insight not only into the kind of harmony the quintet seeks to cultivate in all facets of life, but also the exciting second full-length that looms on the horizon.

“SOM play the kind of somber, glimmering music that exudes a heavy fog of emotion and introspection around it.” – Kerrang!

“Perfect for laying in a pile of leaves while quietly pondering everywhere you went wrong in life.” – MetalSucks

"To celebrate the five year anniversary of our Purge EP we decided to re-record the first song from that EP 'Innoncent Blood', which was also the first song we ever put out and the song that made people take notice of our existence", the band comment. "And since this is a celebration, we thought that it would be fitting to invite our good friend Jason Evans from Ingested to celebrate with us." Jason Evans adds: "After touring with CABAL and seeing their savagery live and in the flesh I knew I had to jump on a track with the prettiest boyband in metal."

'Innocent Blood' feat. Jason Evans is available now at all digital platforms, stream it here: https://smarturl.it/cabal_innocentblood

CABAL are one of the most promising heavy acts hailing from Denmark, creating a visceral and doom-laden atmosphere throughout both their music and visual expression. The production is crystal clear, whilst the songs draw inspiration from black and death metal to djent, hardcore and more.

Since the release of their debut LP Mark Of Rot (2018) the band have made a name for themselves in both Denmark and the rest of the world by playing renowned festivals like Copenhell, Roskilde Festival, Euroblast Festival and Complexity Fest as well as touring Europe, Japan and North America.

CABAL are now ready with their second full-length: Drag Me Down is a dark descent into a personal hell brought to life by crushing instrumentals, an oppressive atmosphere and dark personal lyrics delivered with a relentless intensity, while still leaving room for experimentation and expansion of CABAL’s signature sound.

Add to this guest appearances from metal titans Trivium’s Matt Heafy, rising metalcore stars PolarisJamie Hails and Denmark’s blackgaze darlings Møl’s Kim Song Sternkopf and there is no doubt that this a release worth keeping your eyes and ears peeled for.

Finnish metalcore eccentrics ONE MORNING LEFT release video for new single 'Sinners Are Winners'
One Morning Left press shot.jpg

Finnish metalcore act ONE MORNING LEFT have released a video for their new single 'Sinners Are Winners'. The track is taken from the band's forthcoming album Hyperactive, due for release on 21st May 2021 via Arising Empire. 'Sinners Are Winners' follows previous singles 'Ruby Dragon' and 'Neon Highway', continuing the barrage of fast-paced tracks from the eccentric sextet.

Check out the video for 'Sinners Are Winners' here: https://youtu.be/9wHKE3PIxmM

Stream/purchase 'Sinners Are Winners' here: https://OneMorningLeft.lnk.to/sinnersarewinners

Party anthem 'Sinners Are Winners' is a love letter to 80’s hard rock and a parody of the party hard lifestyle and rock 'n' roll clichés. The new single also features a face-melting guitar solo from producer/guitarist Joonas Parkkonen (Santa Cruz, Lost Society, Apocalyptica).

“I f***ing love the 80’s and wanted to mix those guitar mannerisms with metalcore, creating one of the most fun songs to bang your head to,says guitarist/lead vocalist Leevi Luoto.

Pre-order Hyperactive here: https://OneMorningLeft.lnk.to/hyperactive

ONE MORNING LEFT’s fourth album marks their first new material in five years. On Hyperactive the group begin a whole new chapter in their story, drawing inspiration from retro electronic and video game music, as well as 80's hard rock, while staying true to their heavier roots.

Changes are happening not only in the musical style, but also in their line-up. Returning from the cast of 2016’s Metalcore Superstars are frontman Mika Lahti, singer/guitarist Leevi Luoto and drummer Niko Hyttinen. Additional firepower is provided by new faces Tuukka Ojansivu on guitar and Miska Sipiläinen on bass guitar, as well as the return-to-form of keyboard player Touko Keippilä from the band’s original Panda <3 Penguin line-up.

The album shapes up to be the artistic peak of ONE MORNING LEFT's musical "blood mountain": epic lyrics carried by Luoto’s soaring vocal melodies, contrasted by the distinctive, gritty sound of Lahti, all accompanied by breathtaking keyboard leads, blisteringly fast guitars, masterful bass riffs and feverish drum parts.

With the release of Hyperactive, ONE MORNING LEFT look to add to their growing global fanbase. Having gathered extensive live performance experience playing countless shows in Finland, touring mainland Europe, Russia, and the Baltics, as well as Iceland and Japan, the group are planning to take their entertaining and energetic live show on the road in the near future.

The band conclude: "Join us on our quest to make the world a bit more epic!"

Founded in 2008 in Vaasa, Finland, ONE MORNING LEFT are well known for their unique blend of electro, hardcore and metalcore influences as well as their entertaining and energetic live shows where absolutely anything can happen.

ONE MORNING LEFT have played shows with bands including Amaranthe, Machinae Supremacy, Adept, Protest The Hero, Fear Of Domination, Turmion Kätilöt and We Butter The Bread With Butter. The band have also graced the Finnish festival season, playing renowned festivals like Tuska Open Air and Rockfest.

BOUND IN FEAR release single / video and announce EP
BIF3 small.jpg

UK deathcore quintet BOUND IN FEAR have unveiled single / video 'Left To Drown,' taken from their upcoming EP, Eternal, out 26th March via Unique Leader Records.

Pre order Eternal here:
https://www.indiemerch.com/uniqueleader (US)
https://www.impericon.com/en/unique-leader-records.html (Europe)

Since their formation in 2016, UK quintet BOUND IN FEAR have been creating uncompromisingly heavy music and in a short time have crafted a niche for themselves amongst the ungodly heavy. Their first release Regicide was received incredibly well by the underground scene, selling out of all pressings. The band spent the release cycle playing shows around the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. The accrued reputation the band gained resulted in a record deal with Unique Leader Records.

The next step in BOUND IN FEAR’s catalogue of monstrously heavy music was the 2019 debut full-length The Hand Of Violence. The lyrical content took a very dark and personal route, while the compositions became more structured, intricate, and menacing. The release propelled BOUND IN FEAR into a new echelon of the extreme music scene, seeing their streaming stats increase heavily and CD, vinyl and merch sales beating all expectations.

Now in 2021, BOUND IN FEAR follow up with the Eternal EP, a collection of five songs crafted with detailed soundscapes, a result of increased collaboration within a refreshed line-up, and a hunger for ever more extreme compositions, sounds, and tones. Eternal will stand as a testament to the new direction of BOUND IN FEAR, without leaving behind their previous works. With Eternal, BOUND IN FEAR are ready to show the extreme metal world that they are here to stay, and here to slay.

Vocalist Ben Mason comments “BOUND IN FEAR to me has always been self-explanatory - it's about things that we go through in life that define us as people. The Eternal EP touches on memories that manifest into nightmares, substance abuse, childhood trauma and everything in between that we don't talk about because we feel ashamed.

“In our music we always try to give an honest experience to show people that they are not alone, but to also help them understand that being angry, sad, upset and confused is okay - not everyone can see what happens behind closed doors. The things that we experience may be Eternal, but they can also be beaten.”

Polish shamanic doom band SUNNATA release hypnotic new single 'Black Serpent' ahead of album release
SUNNATA_2021_003_C_Peter_Sadowski_resize.jpg

Polish wilderness prophets SUNNATA (sanskr. noun emptiness, voidness), a four-piece shamanic doom metal band, have released their new single 'Black Serpent', taken from forthcoming full-length album Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth which is released on 26th February.

Listen to 'Black Serpent' here: https://youtu.be/smStsbzqheA
Add to your Spotify playlists here: https://spoti.fi/3aV1LsL
Pre-order Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth here: https://linktr.ee/sunnata

SUNNATA comments: "'Black Serpent' is very different from our previous single 'Crows'. Heavily inspired by repetitive, neurotic, a bit kraut-like rhythms and church-like harmonised vocals it hits you suddenly with full spectrum doom riffage just to take you on a shamanic ayahuasca interdimensional trip shortly after. All of this to create a background for yet another story of religious fanaticism."

A ritualistic, meditatively uplifting, doom soundscape, Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth is a sensuous, ever-mutating musical experience. SUNNATA produce a pulsating mystic dirge which shimmers with odd beauty and uplifting melodies. The result is an atmosphere of sacred submission immersed in huge dynamics for the duration of the album’s 46-minute expanse.

SUNNATA have been paving their own way to higher metal skies since their 2014 debut Climbing The Colossus. Their spellbinding sophomore album Zorya (2016) made the band gather even more momentum with regard to the European alternative heavy scene. Third album Outlands (2018) brilliantly brought out even more ritual in the heavy, confidently crossing the frontier of progressive doom to land in even more melancholic and mind-expanding alleys.

Returning in 2021 with Burning In Heaven, Melting On Earth, SUNNATA are at their most transcendent, melding together all the heaviness, intensity and tenderness into a graceful, cross-pollinating form to create something incredible that demands attention and respect. From here SUNNATA are free to roam wherever.

Szymon Ewertowski - guitar, vocals
Adrian Gadomski - guitar, vocals
Michal Dobrzanski - bass guitar
Robert Ruszczyk – drums, percussion
