Swedish alternative metal act Aviana releases video for new single 'Oblivion'
AVIANA 2021.jpg

Swedish alternative metal act Aviana has released a video for his new single 'Oblivion', out now via Arising Empire. 'Oblivion' follows previous single 'Retaliation' which marked Aviana's return earlier this year, now led solely by Joel Holmqvist.

Holmqvist comments on the new single:

"This song is angry, and honest. The first phrase in the lyrics saying "I am not stating a lie for you" explains a lot. When you are in a relationship with someone, a friend, a relative or a loved one. You can't do whatever pleases only you. You always have to be nice and think about the way you act towards others. I guess that's mainly what this song is about, someone being a total asshole and not seeing it."

Last year many people experienced dark times and suffered great loss. Joel Holmqvist, vocalist of Swedish metalcore act Aviana, was one of those people. Despite the successful release of their sophomore album Epicenter via Arising Empire in 2019, all his former bandmates declared they were leaving Aviana in March 2020.

However, Holmqvist quickly realised that he was not done with Aviana and decided to continue with the project himself. Throughout the pandemic, he has gathered strength to build something new and special - the next chapter of Aviana.

"I was in a dark place for a long time when my former bandmates decided to leave the band. It was hard! I think this song as a start reflects all those feelings and thoughts that I had to fight during that difficult time," he explains.

Aviana’s new sound is heavier than ever before and offers a taste of what’s to come, Holmqvist assures."I'm building this up with the new Aviana now. There's a new chapter, a new story and a new era coming!" he concludes.

Dark electronic master Perturbator, aka James Kent, has released new single 'Dethroned Under a Funeral Haze', from his highly-anticipated new full-length album, Lustful Sacraments, out 28th May via Blood Music.

"One of the slower tracks on the album. It’s about death as the great equaliser,” explains James Kent.

News of the nine-song album arrived in early March, with a preview coming via the 'Death of the Soul' video (https://youtu.be/h_XSKj_qX4g), a track Revolver dubbed a “nihilistic EBM banger” and Kerrang! said was “unsurprisingly ace”.

Lustful Sacraments - which was written, performed, produced and mixed by Kent - represents his most mature work to date, merging the dark synthesised tones that brought Perturbator to worldwide prominence with classic post-punk, goth, and heavy techno rhythms. The album deftly weaves Perturbator’s cinematic textures with thundering drums, subtle electronic melodies and in-your-face guitar hooks.

“It’s an album about bad habits, dissatisfaction and addiction,” adds Kent of the album that serves as a follow-up to 2017’s New Model EP. He concludes: “An overall look at how we, as a species, lean towards self-destruction.”

Lustful Sacraments also features special guest appearances from Hangman's Chair and True Body.

Album pre-orders, which include both a gatefold 2LP and a 2LP picture disc as well as a cassette, CD and digital release, are available here: http://www.blood-music.com/store

Dark electro master Perturbator is considered by many as the face of retrosynth.

In 2012, Perturbator's onslaught of initial releases ('Night Driving Avenger,' 'Terror 404,' 'Nocturne City,' and 'I Am the Night') rocketed him through the ranks of retrosynth producers – receiving tons of accolades and comparisons to John Carpenter, Goblin, and Vangelis. As he continued to hone his skills as a producer, Perturbator actively searched for something deeper within electronic music.

This took a darker turn with his 2014 smash breakthrough Dangerous Days and went deeper into the mire with 2016's Billboard-chart topping The Uncanny Valley. But James “Perturbator” Kent was feeling the limitations of the genre he helped redefine.

The 2017 album New Model eschews the nostalgia and pop culture references controlling the synthwave scene, feeling that they interfere with true subject matter. Of course, there are a vast array of influences at work on New Model - ranging from Kraftwerk to Lorn to D.A.F and Nine Inch Nails – but Kent wanted to break out and explore releasing music on its own merit, rather than regurgitating tropes.

2021 will see the release of a new Perturbator album, more details soon.

… French dark-futuristic act Perturbator… [mixes] metal’s energy and lack of self-consciousness with the blazing synths of ’80s gore flicks and video games.” - Kerrang

“…it’s dark and creepy and overwhelming…” - Decibel

Modern metal frontrunners Tetrarch stream new single / video 'Negative Noise'

Breakout metal stars Tetrarch have continued to deliver on their promise of taking over the metal scene in 2021 with the release of their two successful new singles, 'I'm Not Right' and 'You Never Listen'. Today - in anticipation of their new album Unstable (out 30th April via Napalm Records) - they're dropping a third, 'Negative Noise'.

Watch the video to 'Negative Noise' here: https://youtu.be/NFuPQ159LRU

'Negative Noise' is a sonic call to rise above the mediocre static that surrounds us. This vigorous banger showcases the heavier-metal side of Tetrarch, walloping the listener with gritty riffage, forceful growls and an unrelenting double bass assault that harks back to Slipknot’s prime years. With moshpit ready breakdowns, eerie Jonathan Davis-esque vocal passages and a blistering solo, 'Negative Noise' proves itself as one of 'Unstable’s most relentless, assertive anthems.

Frontman and guitarist Josh Fore says: "'Negative Noise' is one of the heaviest songs on the new record. It mixes big riffs with thick bass, extreme drums and some of the most intense screams I’ve ever done. One of the highlights of the song is Diamond’s guitar solo that she absolutely killed and I know will turn so many people's heads."

Lyrically, the song is about constantly being surrounded by negativity and people trying to pull us in a million directions. More than ever, there is so much static around us, and we wanted to write a song about dealing with it and blocking out all of the noise."

The album is available for pre-order in several exciting formats, here: https://napalmrecords.com/tetrarch

Produced by the band and Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Allegaeon, Khemmis), Unstable follows the band’s breakout debut Freak (2017). The new album shines not only as a natural step forward for TETRARCH, but a giant leap ahead – an even more focused effort combining bright flourishes, grooving low-end and soaring choruses. Unstable wastes no time igniting with the unforgettable, punching first single 'I’m Not Right'. Boosted by frontman Josh Fore’s raw emotion and dynamic vocal style, the track pays homage to the genre’s greats while lifted by the eerie leads of trailblazing lead guitarist Diamond Rowe. Radio-ready, lyrically-relevant tracks like anti-bullying anthem for the ages 'Sick Of You' and empowering 'You Never Listen' showcase TETRARCH’s hefty progressions and unforgettable choruses. Unstable’s heaviest offerings prove the band’s dynamic assault of varying heavy styles, most notedly on assertive breakneck burner 'Negative Noise' – a track that will turn the heads of metal’s greatest riffers with Rowe’s mighty axe attack – and on the melodically chilling 'Take A Look Inside', highlighting the powerful rhythm section of bassist Ryan Lerner and drummer Ruben Limas. The album explores a brooding, introspective side of the band on the standout, melodic 'Addicted' and closer track 'Trust Me', which trickles in supernatural atmosphere. Delivering heavy hit after hit, Unstable is 10 tracks of pure potency and undeniable talent.

Diamond Rowe says about the album: “The album has an overall theme of self-reflection and really looking at the relationships or parts of yourself/your life that you don’t like and getting out of those situations. It’s an angsty record. Musically, we were not timid in showing that we refuse to be boxed in as artists, and I think we really came out swinging with showing the world the type of band that we want to be. Freak did great for us and showed us that the music we were making was something that people wanted to hear, and that gave us the confidence to write and record this beast of an album.”

Mexican industrial darkwave duo EGGVN release new single 'Lvcifer Ex Machina' and announce new album
unnamed (79).jpg

Mexican darkwave duo EGGVN have released their new single 'Lvcifer Ex Machina', and announced their forthcoming album La Era de la Bestia, to be released 14th May via German label Out Of Line Music.

Watch the video for 'Lvcifer Ex Machina' here: https://youtu.be/F7y3cN-gOO4

Stream here: https://eggvn.lnk.to/LvciferExMachina

Preorder the album: https://eggvn.lnk.to/LaEradelaBestia

EGGVN (named after the cult of the dead) fully demonstrate with their mesmeric sound how fragile our concept of 'reality' is. The new track conceptually deals with the obscure celebration of a war ritual: “in which the coming is announced, conquers, submits the enemy, and then the victory is glorified over the conquered land“, explain EGGVN.

'Lvcifer Ex Machina' is a song inspired by what happens during an invocation ritual, the contact with the dark, the ritual, the elements, and the spiritual level necessary to make contact, explain EGGVN about their latest single, “it is a quite interesting song since it carries an amalgam. Very energetic musical that is completed with the style of voice that was used to give it more strength and aggressiveness, we reached a very distinctive sound and that has made us very satisfied.”

La Era de la Bestia will decisively define dark electronic dance with EGGVN's satanic, ritualistic hard industrial wave.

Forming in 2019, the duo have already showed what power and incredible presence exists within them and their music. Despite all their electronic subtleties, 'La Era de la Bestia' has inherent originality that EGGVN carry on like the proud heirs of the Aztecs. Just as the band's forebears once combined their mystical mathematical knowledge with their animalistic rawness, EGGVN also see it as their task to carry on the “light of knowledge” – as the artists themselves emphasize – like a Lucifer on the dancefloor, with fervent brutality.

Evoking an ineffable blend of the savagery of Combichrist, the infectious beats of Front Line Assembly, and the positive aggression of Hocico, EGGVN are a new act fully demanding your attention.

Phoxjaw release video for new single 'An Owl Is A Cat With Wings'
Phoxjaw 2020 Teething.jpg

Bristolian quartet Phoxjaw have released a video for 'An Owl Is A Cat With Wings', the latest single from their 2020 debut album Royal Swan, out now via Hassle Records.

Phoxjaw are joined by a parliament of owls in the video for the aptly titled single, they comment:

"Toot your hoot, my god they’re cute, Phoxjaw shoot new music video for ‘An Owl Is A Cat With Wings’. If all goes to sh*t at least we have each other and what’s left of our humanity."

Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/Xz0W5KsLClc

Stream/purchase Royal Swan here: https://smarturl.it/Royal_Swan

After the turbulent times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Phoxjaw have confirmed a new date for their Royal Swan album release show, in partnership with Signature Brew. The event will now take place on 20th May 2021 at Signature Brew Brewery in East London - tickets are on sale and include a free beer. Find out more here: https://www.signaturebrew.co.uk/products/phoxjaw-album-release-party-20th-may

Phoxjaw were also scheduled to tour the UK in February 2021 in support of Royal Swan, however due to the ongoing pandemic the majority of the dates were cancelled. The two shows in Bristol have been rescheduled to 6th and 7th October 2021.

Born from a cabin-fevered recording experience at Devil’s Bridge in Wales, Royal Swan harks back to a fantastical medieval England. Without being overtly political, Royal Swan also details the tension inherent in modern day Great Britain – the sense of isolation and resentment the United Kingdom has fostered versus trying to retain a sense of pride in one’s own country. Listen out especially for the title-track and opening track for this.

To this end, and in classic Phoxjaw style, Royal Swan enlists a range of local musicians and sound-experiences, adding to the band’s core unique sound. Devil’s Bridge Cottage leaves its mark on the record, fostering Phoxjaw’s claustrophobic recording experience and physically shaping the sound, with each band member recording in separate rooms (and guitars in an airing cupboard).

Self-produced, with drums recorded by Lewis Johns, Royal Swan marks Phoxjaw’s step into the limelight following two highly respected EPs (2018's Goodbye Dinosaur... and 2019's A Playground For Sad Adults). A rare group who combine humour, quirk, intrigue, a huge range of influences, and power, Phoxjaw are a band who’ll never stop having things to say.

Having toured with Black Peaks, Pagan, Zakk Sabbath’s cruise, Loathe and plenty more already, Phoxjaw have begun making waves in the UK underground rock scene. Solid support from Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Total Guitar Magazine, BBC Radio 1 (Future Sounds with Annie Mac, Indie Show with Jack Saunders, Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter) BBC 6 Music's Steve Lamacq, Kerrang! Radio, Amazing Radio and more has earmarked this band as ones to watch, and rightly so.

Danny Garland - vocals/bass
Josh Gallop - guitar/keys
Kieran Gallop - drums
Alexander Share - guitar/vocals

ABOUT POWERWOLF:
The story of POWERWOLF, which began in 2004, reads like a true fairytale, but is the result of the most hard-working and entertaining live band on the heavy metal planet. POWERWOLF has not only received plenty of Gold and Platinum awards to date, but numerous releases have reached the top of the official German album charts. With Blessed & Possessed (2015), POWERWOLF achieved Gold status for the first time, while its predecessor, Preachers Of The Night (2013), hit the official German album charts at #1, and their incredible DVD, The Metal Mass (2016), came in at #1 of the German DVD-Charts. POWERWOLF's holy mass in the name of heavy metal is unstoppable – their latest magnum opus, The Sacrament of Sin (2018), again entered the album charts at #1 in Germany, and also charted strongly across Europe and in the United States. The accompanying, almost completely sold-out Wolfsnächte headline tour, in which POWERWOLF headlined large venues with their phenomenal stage performances, became a single major triumph – as well as the numerous summer festival shows in which crowds were thrilled and completely captivated by the ‘wolf and their unique, (un)holy metal mass. Notably the band co-headlined Bloodstock Open Air in the United Kingdom in 2019, headlined the mighty Wacken, and were to play Download Festival's mainstage in 2021. With the new studio album, Call Of The Wild, and the Wolfsnächte 2021 tour charging through the largest halls in Europe, 2021 will again be a year completely under the sign of the wolf pack!

Nihilistic sludge metallers Beggar perform debut Compelled To Repeat in live studio session
unnamed (72).jpg

Sludge-meets-extreme metal nihilists Beggar have announced their live studio session for debut album Compelled To Repeat, premiering on Thursday 1st April at 8pm BST via the APF Records Youtube channel.

Watch 'Matryoshka Brain' taken from the full recorded studio session here: https://youtu.be/LDG0KW9zaOY

Bookmark the Beggar premiere / tune into the full studio session on Thursday 1st April at 8pm BST here: https://youtu.be/ngtHzKqFkGI

One year ago almost to the day, as the world was gripped by news of the emerging Covid-19 pandemic, Beggar were readying themselves for the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Compelled To Repeat on 3rd April 2020 via APF Records. Unable to tour, unable to fulfil their booked album launch shows, the band, along with the rest of the world, stood still and then retreated to their homes to enter lockdown. As reality dawned that their hopes and dreams of touring their debut release were shattered, the band fuelled by frustration and determined to play tracks that had never been performed live before, entered Buffalo Studio, London in December 2020 to record a live session of the whole album. With live engineer JB Pilon at the helm, shot by Sam Finney and mixed and mastered by Wayne Adams (of Petbrick with Igor Cavalera), the result on this first anniversary of the album’s release is an inside look at what a real, raw live in-studio Beggar performance looks like.

Beggar vocalist and bassist Charlie Davis commented: “We made this video to celebrate what we love about playing music. We had some pretty bad timing when we released Compelled to Repeat last year because it was completely crunched by lockdown, which landed pretty squarely a week before the release date. Our album launch tour bit the dust along with all of our other gigs in 2020, and we ended up in different places, doing different things, unable to play together.

"So we wanted to grab what time we could with each other towards the end of 2020 and make something to celebrate the fact that we managed to get the album out in the first place. Working on and releasing Compelled to Repeat was a really positive time for us and we wanted to punctuate the dead year that followed with something cool to take away from it - and we hope this comes across. We had invaluable help from Sam Finney who expertly shot and edited the footage, from JB Pilon at Buffalo Studios where it was all filmed and recorded, and from Wayne Adams who mixed and mastered the audio. All things considered it looks and sounds awesome and was a ton of fun to make!"

Debut album Compelled To Repeat is a devastating listening experience and was recorded with Wayne Adams (responsible for recent works by Green Lung, 11Paranoias and Terminal Cheesecake) at Bear Bites Horse, London and mastered by the master of noise himself, James Plotkin (Sunn O))), ISIS, Pelican and Earth). A fuming tornado of aggression and frustration which offered a glimpse into a new sphere of savagery, the album received critical acclaim worldwide upon its release.

Impossible to fit within the stoner bracket, Beggar's sound nonetheless nods to the huge monoliths of tone that such a tag implies. More multi-faceted than the death metal or hardcore genres would allow, Beggar still use the sheer brutality and visceral dynamics of those styles as their primary means of propulsion, seeking to leave the listener with real scars from raw, honest music.

Comprised of Charlie Davis (vocals/bass), Abe Whitworth (guitars), Jake Leyland (guitars/vocals) and Bertrand Sautier (drums, formerly of French deathgrind outfit Sedative), Beggar have shared stages with the likes of Eyehategod, Slabdragger, Elephant Tree, The Obsessed and appeared at Bloodstock Festival in 2019.

The follow-up to the highly praised Servants Of The Countercosmos, released by the legendary Avantgarde MusicWode's Burn In Many Mirrors presents the band’s most potently wild and predatory work yet. With six new tracks spanning forty minutes of meticulously summoned infernal ferocity, the band scorches the landscape and drapes it in the foul reek of death’s fog. One may hear the ancient voice of obscure and revered gods reflected through Wode's sulphuric incantations, the raging fire of the most blasphemous legends of the past called upon by the spirit of chaos and death. Shrouded in sepulchral black metal atmosphere and freezing cold melodies, Burn In Many Mirrors displays a studied regard for songcraft and motive well beyond mere convention, transforming into a concentrated dark chorus of ruin and abomination.

Now ploughing headlong into their second decade of existence on the material plane, Wode’s definitive melding of black metal’s ecstatic desecration, death metal’s sharply attuned sense of violent purpose, and their take on classic anthemic ‘80s metal instills Burn In Many Mirrors with the elements necessary to sear itself into the fervent heart of the faithful.

Featuring cover artwork by Santiago Caruso (Star Gazer), Burn In Many Mirrors was recorded between March and August 2020 by Joe Clayton at NØ Studio, and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna).

Having recently signed to highly respected US label 20 Buck Spin and after adding guitarist Dan Shaw (from side-project Aggressive Perfector), Wode are stronger and more determined than ever, something Burn in Many Mirrors truly reflects.
