Folk-prog artist Dikajee releases new single 'Forest'; announces debut LP Forget~Me~Nots
Dikajee.jpg

One of the most beautiful, haunting, unique releases of the year arrives in the form of ‘world citizen’ Dikajee, and her debut full-length album Forget~Me~Nots, released 13th August.

Dikajee has also released her first single from the album, the hauntingly evocative 'Forest'.

Premiered via Prog, you can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/D1VlJhuVU3Y

Pre-order Forget~Me~Nots here: dikajee.com

Forget~Me~Nots is a stunning display from the originally Russian-based musician, which throughout places her incredible voice front and centre. It’s a fitting tribute to an artist who considers herself a globalist. In her words: “I am a citzen of the world. No age, no nationality, no gender, no religion. I know we can’t completely run away from reality, but as R.P. McMurphy said, “At least I tried”.”

Such an esoteric, worldly approach is truly typical of this brilliant artist, and an album recorded throughout Europe, and with a truly international cadre and calibre of musician. Recording and producing in Norway, Portugal, Germany, France, Latvia, Russia, Forget~Me~Nots features guest appearances from Faun’s Fiona Rüggeberg (bagpipes), Klone’s Guillaume Bernard (guitars), Erik Truffaz's Artis Orubs (drums) and Amber Foil’s João Filipe (guitars) among others.

The international, collaborative outlook pays dividends across a record that showcases the best of folk, minimalist electronic, neo-baroque, neo-classical and truly inventive progressive rock. Above all else shines through Dikajee’s voice, a once-in-a-generation talent that recalls the best of Bjork and Kate Bush. Musically, shades of Steven Wilson, Nightwish, and Gentle Giant shine through.

Across Forget~Me~Nots Dikajee’s gloriously imaginative ethos is heard again and again. Track Four, ‘River Rite’, is a self-described “pagan ritual” song, which plays on the dual parables of the energy of floral wreaths, and of the wiseman by the river. The closing track, ‘Something Mystique’ is an exploration of the state of loss, and involved the visiting of more than ten abandoned grand estates of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

An artist who previously toured Germany and Switzerland, opened for Yann Tiersen, Recoil (Depeche Mode’s Alan Wilder), and Nils Petter Molvær; and placed in Prog Magazine’s Top Unsigned Bands, Dikajee will deservedly have a bright and illustrious future.

Norwegian powerpop quartet Beachheads release new single

Norwegian powerpop quartet Beachheads are back with their brilliant new summery single 'Jupiter', streaming today 18th June via Fysisk Format.

Stream 'Jupiter' here: https://smarturl.it/Beachheads

Powerpop with punk urgency that is both "Catchy as fuck" (Stereogum) and "Resiliently heart-heavy" (Rolling Stone), Beachheads features two members of renowned metal band Kvelertak in an entirely different guise.

In the band's own words: "This song was written last year, as Jupiter and Saturn came together in the night sky. It’s a celebration of love, ecstasy – and adventurous, sleepless nights."

Reminiscent at times of Hüsker DüIdles and The Marked Men, the new single is a brilliant meld of modern day post-punk and upbeat, classic surf rock.

'Jupiter' is taken from Beachheads forthcoming second album and is produced by Frode Strømstad of I Was A King. Their self-titled debut album from 2017 received widespread acclaim from magazines globally, and was marked as album of the month in tastemaker publications, including Visions and Slam.

Venues release entertaining video for new single 'Mountains'
VENUES 2021 Credit Venera Red.jpg

German modern metal outfit Venues have released a powerful and entertaining video for new single 'Mountains'. The track is the fourth single from their forthcoming album Solace, due for release on 27th August 2021 via Arising Empire.

Once again, Venues worked with videographer Marius Milinski to create the music video for 'Mountains', continuing the story that began in previous singles 'Rite Of Passage', 'Shifting Colors' and 'Uncaged Birds'.

Check out the video for 'Mountains' here: https://youtu.be/HF6U53TTznw

Vocalist Lela says: "For me, 'Mountains' sums up the ups and downs of last year perfectly, but also the hope and confidence that the band gave me. For me, the song represents the inner struggle with myself and the resulting strength, about to grow out of it."

Stream/purchase 'Mountains' here: https://Venues.lnk.to/mountains

Pre-order Solace in various formats here: https://Venues.lnk.to/solace

From the depths of their deepest crisis, Venues emerge victoriously, welcoming two new members - clean vocalist Lela and guitarist Valentin. When former vocalist Nyves quit the band mid-tour, following the release of their pivotal debut Aspire (2019), the modern metal juggernaut was shaken to the bone.

Despite this, the remaining members refused to give up and tirelessly searched for new talent. Following guitarist Constantin witnessing a performance of Lela at (of all places) at a Steel Panther show, the band found their new clean vocalist.

Venues went into the studio with producer Christoph Wieczorek (Annisokay) to record Solace, who coated their massive sound with a metallic alloy of remarkable precision.

“We wanted to be more metal,” Robin comments. “There were some pop sensibilities of Aspire we wanted to replace with rather the opposite.”

Melody and punch-drunk heaviness, metal and alternative rock, zeitgeist and authenticity, barbed choruses and unleashed creativity: with their soaring sophomore release, Venues fulfil every single promise they gave on Aspire.

“2020 showed all of us how much the band is helping us keep our sanity,” guitarist Robin muses. “Almost the whole band went through minor or medium crises since the release of our debut. Relationships went sour, things were ended and begun. In times like these, our second album was the light at the end of the tunnel. Something we all could look forward to. Our music held our heads above water.”

It’s a big leap, going from Aspire to Solace, and it’s a logical one, too. Ten songs, ten exorcisms of negative energy, ten lifesavers.

Sugar Horse stream new single and announce debut LP
unnamed - 2021-06-18T121118.176.jpg

Self-described 'decidedly average' Bristol rockers Sugar Horse have announced their long-awaited debut LP, The Live Long After, to be released 27th August via Small Pond Records.

In recognition of the news, the band have released the first single from the monstrous record. Premiered on Knotfest, you can watch the video for 'Fat Dracula' here: https://youtu.be/DIU0L11f5tQ

Pre-order The Live Long After here: https://link.smallpondrec.co.uk/sugar-horse

Lyrically based around the fear of the unknown, The Live Long After is a caustic, visceral, and highly engaging listen. From the uneasy opening notes of the introduction 'I Am Not Now' (an anti-hymn based on an ancient Byzantine chant), to 'Live Long' (a doom track about the endless void) and 'Death Cult', (which discusses Aleph, the Japanese doomsday movement), the record is an indication of a band bursting with things to say.

It's not for nothing that Sugar Horse have become known as a nonconformist band. Their previous EPs Druj and Drugs were acclaimed amalgams of doom, hardcore, stoner and punk, and The Live Long After continues this curious trend.

Indications of My Bloody Valentine, Cult of Luna, Deafheaven and Oceansize can be heard throughout the record, but still only touch upon the wide variety of sounds and influences Sugar Horse explore. A band who were due to tour with Black Peaks before the inevitable Covid disruption, and who have toured with Vennart and played ArcTanGent, Sugar Horse have received early praise from Upset Magazine, Metal Hammer, and Kerrang!.

Forming in 2015 as a trio in a flat in Bristol, Sugar Horse fully came into being in 2019 with the addition of Jake Healy on baritone guitar and keyboards. Seeking to break away from emerging trends in their scene, the band's emphasis on simplicity and down-tempo heft belies an impressive sense of self-awareness and maturity. In their own words: "I think the best art is formed when it's creators enforce rigid rules on themselves. Mondrian had geometry, Mark E Smith had his hatred for cigarette taxation and we have a complete disregard for urgency."

Despite what they say about themselves, Sugar Horse are anything but "average."

Ashley Tubb (Vocals/Guitar)
Jake Healy (Baritone Guitar, Keyboards)

About Sleep Token:

Beneath the Sleep Token banner lies the unique, broad-based vision of one individual – anonymous, silent, masked, armed with a staggering vocal range, a deft touch on the keyboards, plus a live approach that is never less than fully engaged. The UK underground entity only known as Sleep Token, fronted by Vessel, began the Sundowning ritual on 20th June 2019 with ‘The Night Does Not Belong To God’. Sleep Token began to release their ‘offerings’ bi-weekly, released Thursdays at Sundown BST with accompanying visualisers. Each offering had its own emblem, establishing the Sleep Token universe on the debut album Sundowning. This 18th June, 2021, the cycle begins again but born anew. The new album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, pushes the boundaries of Sleep Token's sound into new avenues of blurring genres while still retaining the signature sound.

ten56. release new single 'Boy'
ten56crop.jpg

New death / industrial / all-round brutal metal band ten56. fronted by Aaron Matts (who recently declared his exit from Betraying the Martyrs) have unveiled their second single 'Boy' along with a music video, via Out Of Line Music.

Watch the video to 'Boy' here: https://youtu.be/xmKN-bqTF_A

Stream 'Boy' here: https://ten56.lnk.to/Boy

Aaron comments on the new single 'Boy': "'Boy' is one of the tracks from the upcoming record that we feel really captures the dark headspace of the ten56. universe; we set out to write a song that was as unnerving and hectic as 'Diazepam' but that also incorporates some of the elements that, as listeners will come to learn, makes the ten56. sound as unique as it is. As is the case for many of our tracks, the lyrical content is taken from the most traumatizing moments of our personal lives; there's nothing that could convince me to go into detail publicly about the original theme of this track, so we'll just let the listener come to their own conclusion about 'Boy'."

On the making of the 'Boy' video, Aaron states: "As with the lyrical content, the theme of the music video for 'Boy' is meant to plunge the audience into a state of discomfort, and to highlight the chaotic sound of ten56., the live performance experience is something that, given the current times, people will have to wait to discover, so we're happy to have captured the intensity of a live performance, to be able to introduce the personalities that make up the band, and also to deliver the dark thematic of the song itself." The music video shoot was two very intense days of hard work in the cold, "we knew we wanted to work with the very talented Pavel Trebukhin, and we are incredibly happy with the result!"

Listen/watch previous single 'Diazepam' here https://ten56.lnk.to/diazepam

ten56. deliver a new level of uncomfortably heavy. Aaron has joined forces with members of Novelists FR, Uneven Structure and Kadinja to unleash their gut-wrenching sound that is sure to leave listeners in a state of despair. This is filth like you've never heard before.

On the formation of ten56. and upcoming plans, Aaron continues: "We've been working on this silently for over a year and have a lot of surprises all backed up and ready to go; I can confidently say that no matter what people's first impressions of our first single may be, they should not be hasty to form an opinion until they have heard the whole upcoming record, each single is going to a shock to the system, that I am sure of!

"As for the guys in the band, it's been a help being in the game for over ten years, it started with Arnaud, then together we hand picked from our close friends who we knew would be the perfect fit, and f*ck me we lucked out, everyone is so sick."

Metal giants Jinjer announce highly anticipated new album and stream single / video
shot 2 press release.png

Teased over the last few months with just the hashtag #JINJER4, Jinjer have now dropped the biggest heavy music news of the year: the release their long-awaited new studio album, Wallflowers, on 27th August via Napalm Records.

The band have also unveiled the album's first single 'Vortex', watch the video here: https://youtu.be/AiaOSGZTwtY

Through their relentless hard work, non-stop international touring and critically acclaimed chart-topping releases gaining them over 250 million cross-platform streams/viewsJinjer are inarguably one of modern metal's hottest and most exciting bands today. The band have become synonymous with doing things their own way and breaking every rule in the heavy metal handbook, which is loudly evident on their highly anticipated fourth studio album and the successor to the ground-breaking Macro.

Bassist Eugene Abdukhanov comments: “Growing creatively has always been a major goal for us. The day Jinjer stops reaching for new musical horizons - will be our last day as a band. We could have churned out what our peers expected us to do or produce 'Pisces' clones without end but we’ve never done that and we never will. Instead, we wrote an album whose level of emotions range from the fiercest aggression we’ve ever had, to the most intricate melodies and melancholic vibes you could ever get from our music. We decided to rip apart all possible stylistic boundaries without regard to financial success or competing with our previous albums. Wallflowers is a different kind of album musically and visually. It’s about our identity as a band, as individuals and a clear statement that we are different from most artists … and that it is OK to do your own thing.”

Already regarded as one of the most anticipated metal albums of the year, with Wallflowers, Jinjer once again prove their exceptional knack for mixing groove, prog, alternative and experimental influences to create a sound unlike anything that has ever come before it.

Along with an impressive new music video, Jinjer just dropped their hypnotising first single 'Vortex'. This first taste of the new album features Tatiana Shmayluk’s vocal power entwining with the eclectic, propulsive spiral aura of the track, not only showcasing the four-piece’s tonal diversity, but also proving their individuality once again. The accompanying music video holds up a black mirror to current world events: qualitatively in the absolute top league and featuring an interplay of potent band shots and virtual features, the four-minutes track devours the viewer with destructive energy and on the other hand represents the gloomy, absorbing mood and oppression of an entire period of time.

Jinjer state: "'Vortex' is first song we recorded and the first single we played live (at Hellfest From Home 2021). This is a perfectly balanced song in our opinion. A story told through the music and it deserved a video to perfectly match it... The video is a journey, giving the single another layer, another message, as Tatiana sings about the burden of heavy thoughts and how devastating it can be, the video mirrors what the world has sadly become for many of us …"

Wallflowers not only presents a methodical and premeditated next step in the band's already imposing career, but moreover, it mirrors the personal adversities they’ve faced due to the worldwide events over the last year. Wallflowers is not only an upgrade to the progressive groove metal sound that all Jinjer fans crave, but also a sonic pressure cooker of technical musicianship, emotional fury and an intense soundtrack befitting the harrowing state of the world today. Hailing from the conflict-ridden Ukrainian region of Donetsk but now calling Kiev their home base, Jinjer truly do not mince words – or riffs – on Wallflowers. Their exceptional precision of modern metal paired with tough as nails attitude has earned them a fiercely loyal, rabid fanbase and massive critical acclaim, making Jinjer one of the most talked about bands today and garnering them many sold-out performances across the globe. With nearly all of Jinjer’s releases composed between vans, backstage rooms and constant touring, Wallflowers continues where its predecessor Macro left off, only this time with less distraction and more time to focus on songwriting.

Doom pop quintet SOM release their Roadburn Redux performance
unnamed - 2021-06-16T154841.133.jpg

SOM – the doom pop group made up of current and former members of Constants, Junius, and Caspian – have released their Roadburn Redux Festival performance.

Watch here: https://youtu.be/btu7lwplgmA

The exclusive pre-recorded in-studio performance video, initially streamed from the stunning location of Leipzig’s UT Connewitz, one of Germany’s oldest cinemas, showcases the tracks 'Awake // Sedate' and 'Youth // Decay' taken from the band’s Awake EP released earlier this year.

SOM have also been announced for Camp Caspian this September. Curated by the members of Caspian, the three-day outdoor music festival will take place from 3rd - 6th September at Camp Oak Hill in Nottingham, Pennsylvania and will find SOM sharing the stage with Caspian, Pianos Become The Teeth, Junius, Dreamtigers, Aisha Burns, and the newly reunited Seneca. The intimate gathering will also feature acoustic and ambient sets, rig rundowns, axe throwing, swimming, nature walks, tattooing, and so much more.

Combining two exclusive originals with remixes by collaborators Holy Fawn, Hisself (Johnny Dang of O’Brother), U Dye (Marshall Gallagher of Teenage Wrist), and Giuseppe Capolupo (The Devil Wears Prada), SOM’s Awake EP is a doom pop triumph. Its concise compositions balance the gritty riffs of Deftones with airy, Tame Impala-esque vocal lines, just as primed for rock radio success as they are for shoegaze-loving connoisseurs.

and here: http://somtheband.bandcamp.com

SOM were founded by Duncan Rich, frontman and former Constants colleague Will Benoit, and Adai founder and now-Caspian drummer Justin Forrest. While touring in support of their debut full-length The Fall in 2019, the band added guitarists Mike Repasch-Nieves and Joel M. Reynolds, both formerly of Junius and Driftoff.

The tracks on Awake are part of SOM’s ongoing mission to “leave this place better than we found it.”

Despite being recorded in quarantine, the EP was mixed by Benoit at his own Radar Studio in Connecticut – New England’s first solar-powered recording facility. Repasch-Nieves and Reynolds, meanwhile, spent the last year sustaining an urban farm in New York City, while Forrest distributed vegan food to Black Lives Matter activists in Denver through the Summer. Equally philanthropic is Rich, who now uses his production experience to host emotional fluency events for men. While many musicians lumbered in inactivity, SOM has used the darkness of recent times to create and heal. Awake’s bliss is an insight not only into the kind of harmony the quintet seeks to cultivate in all facets of life, but also the exciting second full-length that looms on the horizon.

“SOM… specialize in a gauzy, feedback-soaked sound… It’s not far flung from the output of high-volume shoegazers such as Deftones or Hum.” - Revolver

“SOM play the kind of somber, glimmering music that exudes a heavy fog of emotion and introspection around it.” – Kerrang!

Justin Forrest – bass

Joel M. Reynolds – guitars
