The United By Music Tour, organised by the charity Music Venue Trust and funded by The National Lottery, started in June and is running until late September. The tour has already seen Blossoms, Cat Burns, Metronomy and Bloc Party return to their roots, to highlight the importance of these local venues as part of the music industry’s wider ecosystem, and as important local cultural hubs. The final headliner, Sam Ryder, will be performing a one-off, intimate show at Chinnerys in Southend on 8th September.
The tour also sees a range of artists, including VLURE, Witch Fever, The Big Moon, Sleeper, Ed Harcourt and Rhoda Dakar touring the country, playing 150 gigs at 130 grassroots music venues across the UK..

During Covid, Music Venue Trust managed to prevent the closure of all 900+ venues that they represent. However, the increasing severity of the cost-of-living crisis has resulted in multiple venues closing every month, with the latest stats pointing to 66 closures within the last year. This staggering figure continues at a rate of one venue a week.
Every Grassroots Music Venue that closes represents one less place where local communities can access affordable live music, decreased opportunities for new and emerging artists to perform live and fewer opportunities for event professionals to learn their trade.

Frontman Simon Duson comments on the track: "What would you do if you came to realize that you were programmed to live for only four years? Would you accept the outcome, or try to figure out a way to extend your lifespan? Replicant is a song about dealing with the finiteness of our existence. The song was inspired by Roy Batty, a character from the movie Blade Runner. His tale perfectly embodies the message we want to portray with this track. Musically, it's quite diverse and different compared to most of the music we have created until now. We hope this will be a welcome surprise for new and old fans alike."
For the last decade, Carnation have been at the forefront of reviving old school death metal. There’s something to be said about the artfulness of taking something so primitive and walking that fine line between keeping its classic authenticity without sounding tired or dated. Carnation have always teetered this line, injecting a fresh and contemporary approach without losing the genre’s time-honored traditions. However, the band’s third endeavour sees Carnation erasing those boundaries entirely and abandoning any and all conventions as they traverse into daring new territory. Cursed Mortality pulls the Belgian death dealers deeper into experimental new waters, taking risks as the band steps out of the shadows of its predecessors and comes into its own identity. Cursed Mortality's statement is clear: this is no longer simply a revival; this is Carnation’s rebirth.
“We still play death metal and we still identify as such” explains frontman Simon Duson. “But we know that this is also our second decade performing it. And while it is very important for us to stay true to the old-school style, we know we had to open things up a bit and reach out to those who might be interested in extreme metal, but aren’t that much into the old aspect of it. It also feels fresher to us because we’ve decided to change our visual approach, with a new logo, a new look on stage and so on. In a way, it really feels like the beginning of a new chapter for Carnation.”
Album number three is much more than just a new chapter, but rather feels like a sequel to an already storied career, punctuated by press accolades, an impressive history of live performances, and a lauded discography consisting of several EPs, splits, and two critically acclaimed full-length albums.

Iconic Swedish metal band Shining have unleashed the second single, 'Avsändare Okänd', taken from their upcoming self-titled Napalm Records debut, out on 15th September.

Mastermind Niklas Kvarforth commented on 'Avsändare Okänd': “Our second single, 'Avsändare Okänd', could best be described as what 'Halmstad' or 'Varg Utan Flock' could have sounded if recorded with the current line-up. It’s the opening track of our new album and classic Shining at its absolute darkest.
"The physical version also includes a Danzig cover on the B-side, which will not be released digitally.”
Formed in 1996 and known as one of the most controversial and musically brilliant bands in the black metal scene and beyond, Shining present their eleventh offering that proves even darker than ever before.
According to the band themselves, Shining “will be a downward journey in stereo that will drown the world in a mesmerising, inescapable darkness". The sinister, lurking second single 'Avsändare Okänd' is one of the most vicious and brutal songs in the band’s history. The unsettling accompanying lyric video adds to the disturbing atmosphere of the track.

The unit centred around mastermind Niklas Kvarforth roots their main musical influences in black metal, but does not fit into a single genre alone. Shining incomparably combines influences from various far-reaching genres such as classical music, jazz and progressive rock, conjuring grim moods, aching wounds and deep emptiness. Themes such as self-destruction, suicide and violence play an important role in the band’s music. Over the course of ten studio albums, including masterpieces such as the acclaimed V. Following the album opener 'Avsändare Okänd', 'Snart Är Dem Alla Borta' starts with a hauntingly mellow intro before progressing into aggression. The first single and homage to Death, 'Allt För Döden', is a well-designed nightmare cut from the pitch-black horrors of Shining, and according to the band, is drenched in an instantly recognisable sound that has been perfected over the last three decades, and that has become their trademark today. Fourth track 'Fidelis Ad Mortem' showcases progressive rock influences that are present on several tracks featured on Shining. Instrumental piano piece 'Åttahundratjugo' calms the atmosphere down, before closing track 'Den Permanenta Sömnen Kallar' shakes the listener by instantly kicking off in black metal style from its first seconds.
Shining is a hauntingly captivating and skillful album that features a unique metal sound in true Shining manner, serving the very best of black metal creatively combined with several other influences. Just a few days after performing their show of 2023 with Iron Maiden on the mainstage of the legendary Wacken Open Air, Lord Of The Lost have released a new official video for 'Dead End'. The song is taken from their #1 charting latest album, Blood & Glitter. After the shrill and colourful video for 'Reset The Preset' a month ago, the band spontaneously shot a video in an underground club in London with English director Caitlin Strokes whilst on the Iron Maiden tour.

VEXED formed in 2019, consisting of vocalist Megan Targett, guitarist Jay Bacon, drummer Willem Mason-Geraghty and bassist Al Harper. The band quickly made a name for themselves across the UK metal scene with their hard-hitting sound and dynamic live performances.
Turning heads with their debut singles - including the fearsome 'Elite' featuring Thy Art Is Murder’s CJ McMahon - VEXED quickly created a palpable underground buzz. The album's lyrics explore themes of societal issues such as mental health and social justice and have been praised for their honesty and relatability.

Dutch / Lithuainian metal quartet Awakening Sun return with the I Am More EP, set for a 6th October release. The group have also signed a world-wide with Seek and Strike, as EP marks their first release of this new partnership. The EP’s first single comes via the dynamic track, 'Roses,' which hits on all levels. Its new video can be seen below and showcases the band firing on all cylinders. Awakening Sun states: "The concept of this EP is about someone who’s trying to possess people’s minds. The person never fulfills his dreams and life-goals, that’s why he tries to make it happen through other people’s lives. ‘Roses' is the first track which was written for this EP. It’s a connection between our previous album and our new EP. The song is about people who are afraid to speak up against war crimes. In this context, we use the rose as a symbol of freedom for the people who have hope and energy to keep on fighting. The writing process of this record came really naturally from all the shit happening around us. The current state of the world inspired this EP.
"We signed with Seek and Strike because from the first moment the connection between us and guys in the label was really easy going, but on a very professional level. After looking through the label's roster, we thought we were a great fit.
"With this release, we wanted to take the band's sound to a new level. Bassist Ilja John Lappin comments on the new single: "It is January 2021, deepest winter and Germany is in the middle of a second, long lockdown in the Covid-19 pandemic. The days go by, the snow still falls softly, the long winter takes more strength than ever. And so the almost 10-minute long 'Otus' emerges as the first song of the album in its nearly final form as a song of contemplation, as a long journey through one's own self - in order to not succumb to the crept in self-destruction, but to embrace the hope for a better future."

There are tips of the hat to Queen and Muse, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, and a sprinkled-in tinge of Beatles-loving pop sensibility and Manchester Orchestra-esque poignancy: Haunt the Woods have that rare ability to conjure legacy while creating a bold sound that is newly their own.
With two warmly received EPs and a debut album, Opaque (2020) which was released in 2020, the stage has been set for their overdue introduction to the world, which began with their stunning new single 'Fever Dream'. Cinematic in scope, operatic in texture, new album Ubiquity is a fitting illustration of the band's prowess and talent.
