Make Them Beg For Death delivers savage beatdowns equally designed to pulverise and mesmerise. “It follows on from where Wrong One To Fuck With left off,” drummer Trey Williams promises. “We don’t need to participate in the technical death metal arms race. We’ve got the big guns, and we’ve proven that. It’s all about pointing them in the right direction, so to speak.”

Monstrous riffs, blast beats, unstoppable hooks, and earth-moving grooves define their catalogue. “We put our own twist on Death Metal,” explains co-vocalist/guitarist John Gallagher“We were like most bands, starting in the garage, drinking beer, having a little fun on the weekend, finding the right amps through trial and error. We blended aspects of bands we liked – Suffocation, Obituary, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse, among others; the dual vocal approach of Carcass – and made them our own. ‘Let’s make it moshy, let’s make it slammy.’”

To Dying Fetus, the mission is straightforward. “The philosophy is the same now as it was when the band started,” Gallagher confirms. “To write catchy riffs and to make it memorable. Whatever style of music you’re doing, make it something people want to hear repeatedly.”

Metal quartet Awakening Sun unveil 'Someone Else' single / video

Dutch / Lithuainian metal quartet Awakening Sun return with the I Am More EP, set for a 6th October release. The EP’s second single comes via the dynamic track, 'Someone Else,' which hits on all levels. Its new video can be seen below and showcases the band firing on all cylinders. It's a fresh, modern sound that is filled with groovy riffs, heavy-hitting choruses and captivating hooks.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/XpY6lxWxKeM

Awakening Sun state: “This new track, 'Someone Else,' is definitely one of the heaviest songs on the EP. Not only because of heavy riffs and blast beats, but also lyrically its message about self-underestimation, not feeling fulfilled. The character of the song is always questioning himself and is feeling depressed. We filmed the music video of us playing on a green screen and afterwards projected the footage on different buildings during the night to convey the dark and depressive message.

"With this release, we wanted to take the band's sound to a new level. We are always excited to work on our new material, because every band member has valuable creative input of the art that is being worked on at that moment. We are a mixture of heavy genres put into one cohesive set of music that punches through their listeners' ear drums with huge melodies, epic sections with big breakdowns. We’re very proud of this new release and thanks for checking it out.”

Dead Poet Society release double single & announce UK/European tour

Los Angeles quartet Dead Poet Society have returned with the not one, but two new tracks. Today, the band have shared their new double single ‘Running in Circles’ / ‘HURT’, complete with double feature music video, out now via Spinefarm

Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/WQkWVRudsaw

Stream 'Running In Circles' / 'HURT' here: https://deadpoetsociety.lnk.to/RunningInCirclesHURT

"'Running in Circles' explores the paranoid voices inside our heads," the band share. "It's about the struggle of being real with yourself - avoiding the 'fake.' Sometimes, it feels impossible to avoid. It was written about not being true to yourself and the shame that follows."

As for ‘HURT,’ the band explain: "There's not a lot in life that's more gut-wrenchingly frustrating than trying desperately for years to build a career and having little to show for it. From living on floors and friends' couches or out of your car, to working job after job just barely making ends meet, to going on tour and coming back with less money than you had before. We wrote this song as a symbol of that nagging doubt and insecurity. The doubt that consumes you and that can be triggered by people or events in your life, but more often than not again, it's the voice inside your head.”

The new tracks are the first taste of music from Dead Poet Society since 2021, when they released a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed and head-turning debut album '-!-' (The Exclamation Album). The expanded version added six new tracks - a healthy selection of stripped down songs, live tracks, and a remix. Dead Poet Society have accumulated over 72 million global streams and the band have also enjoyed two Top 15 singles at radio and key playlisting.

Dead Poet Society continue to spend as much time as possible on the road. Having owned the main stage at 2000trees festival this summer, as well as playing a select few sold out UK and European headline dates, the band have now announced an extensive UK/European headline tour, which will set the continent ablaze in February and March 2024.

Dead Poet Society have established themselves as an intense live act not to be missed. The band have previously toured with alt-rock powerhouses Biffy ClyroBadflowerHighly Suspect and BRKN Love; and they’ve played iconic festivals such as DownloadPinkpopRock Werchter and Reading & Leeds in recent years.

Introducing Hunter Oliveri: signs to Spinefarm & releases video for new single 'DUMB'

Hunter Oliveri doesn't profess to having it all figured out.

At just 18, the artist is still making sense of himself; who he is, what he stands for, where his life is going. He doesn't arrive as the next ready-made rockstar action figure cast in plastic. There is an unquestionable realness about the way he makes sense of life in real time through his music, after all.

But a star he most certainly is, with a surety of mind for what he wants: to create music that connects and inspires, and that will pour gasoline on the growing fire of rock's recent renaissance.

Spinefarm is pleased to announce that Hunter Oliveri has signed to the label's international roster. He has also shared a video for his new single 'DUMB'.

Check out the video for 'DUMB' here: https://youtu.be/x7obPYX9_Y0

Stream/purchase 'DUMB' here: https://hunteroliveri.lnk.to/DUMBID

'Dumb' boasts a baggy, distorted riff weaving around an earworm melody and a singalong chorus that finds Oliveri chewing over how "I made a home in the chip on my shoulder / I know I could change / but I'd rather be dumb."

The Gen Z-fronted clip will instantly transport you to your own gloriously misspent youth, when you were simply in search of the next feel-good moment - be it the next blunt, the next swill of beer, or the next hang with your significant other or crew. It also offers keen insight into Oliveri's sound and songwriting, not to mention his wild coif of curls.

It's a fitting look into the heart of a young and hungry artist, who is looking to hold onto and suck the marrow out of his youth and the right here, right now.

"My mom wants me to get a job, two jobs, everything's expensive as f*ck, I have friends making more on OnlyFans than college graduates/doctors, everything's dumb," Oliveri says. "So I tried to grab the feelings I have on the daily of what is the point of doing what my parents want me to do, when sh*t just feels dumb as f*ck."

He continues "I bet a lot of kids could relate to having people tell you to go to college, find a steady career, have a family, and be apart of this f*cked up system, when in reality, I just want to be a kid my entire life, chase girls, skate, smoke, hang with my friends, and make music. I hope the song connects with anyone who just wants to forget all their problems and live life without all the bullsh*t. Just rather be 'DUMB.'"

So what else do you need to know about Hunter Oliveri, whose previous single 'Kids' was tipped by Pigeons + Planes

His are songs that channel the alternative and grunge blueprint of his musical heroes - think Chris Cornell and SoundgardenBilly Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins - imbued with the playful opaqueness of Kurt Cobain's lyricism and the easy slacker hooks of Weezer.

Like all of Oliveri's music, it speaks to the messiness of growing up. It sounds exactly like that, too. He simply writes what he knows.

There are songs about partying too hard and songs about loving too much; songs about last night’s headrush highs and the morning-after's anxious comedown. There are songs for when you need the comfort of relatability, and there are songs for when you want to simply say "f*ck it all."

They are the product of the humble authenticity of someone who's grown up in a place no different to a million others the world over. You’ve likely never heard of Paso Robles, CA, and you likely never will again. There’s sunshine, strip malls, and vineyards that outnumber venues ten to one, where the nearby underground music scene of San Luis a few miles down the road is more accessible than anything resembling the bright lights of LA two hours to the south, or San Francisco the same distance north. "It's a boring city, but we make the most of it," Oliveri shrugs. "We'll go skating, or hang out and smoke. And anyway, it's fun to go moshing in someone's basement."

It’s no surprise, then, that Oliveri is used to creating more interesting scenes than those that existed outside his window. As a kid, he would do so in the stories he dreamt up in his bedroom. "I like writing stories about worlds I'd want to live in," he says, "which made my own world seem so much bigger."

Such creativity inevitably morphed into songwriting in his early teenage years - though music had long since embedded itself within him. "I was probably four years old when I first heard 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' around my parents’ house," he recalls of music's omnipresence in his life. "I never knew the name of the song but every time I heard it, I'd be like, sh*t, it's that song. It would give me this majestic feeling.”

He laughs that his mom holds a video recording of her son gamely plucking through a rendition of a Metallica song (to Oliveri's mind, it was ...And Justice For All epic 'One') at his Kindergarten graduation performance. His dad - an avid fan of Korn and Tool - meanwhile tells him that his parents met at Woodstock; not the peace-and-love of Woodstock '69, but, more aptly, the confusion-and-chaos of Woodstock '99.

A chance meeting with a local producer’s father while in a coffee shop with his grandpa aged 14 would be the first domino to fall in the story of Oliveri's rise to prominence. The rest is a history still to be written. "I've been so incredibly lucky, but I've manifested this, too," he says. "I've always known writing music would be my life. I just had to make it happen. It was hard to find kids around my city that play instruments and want to be in a band, but I’ve been writing songs every day in my bedroom since I was maybe 13 years old. It takes me to a different place."

Those songs are anthems for those disassociated with the world on their doorstep, the soundtrack to growing up marooned between a digital world that for Oliveri speaks of with distain as "rotting people’s brains," and a real one that’s more f*cked up by the day.

"I want to bring people into my world through my music," he adds. "I want people to feel something when they listen to my music, and to relate to me, and for me to be a friend and an outlet for them."

And as for everything else?

Well, he'll figure it out as he goes. Why not join him for the thrill ride?

Alt-Rockers The Hyena Kill return with new single 'Piece Of Hell' (APF Records)

Manchester atmospheric rock band The Hyena Kill return with some of their deepest material to date, with their ferocious new single ‘Piece Of Hell’, an emotive track about finally letting go of that poisonous person in your life.

Watch the new video for 'Piece Of Hell' here:  https://youtu.be/qXuZq2DGMTE?si=Ot8SGOFLKXeAyaa9

Comments vocalist/guitarist Steven Dobb: "Our new single 'Piece Of Hell’ is taken from our forthcoming new album. It’s such an aggressive tune and feels like a return to our roots but gives nothing away as to the overall sound of the record. We've been playing it live for a while now and it’s as cathartic as it gets when we start ripping. It's even got a shredding solo which is a first for The Hyena Kill."

The chaotic video for the new track was made by Ash Tubb, lead singer and guitarist in Sugar Horse, whilst the track was produced/mixed by Andy Hawkins and Dave Draper looked after the mastering.

Dobb continues, "After seeing some of the great DIY videos Ash had done for his band, I asked if he would do one for us. It’s just us jamming in our grubby rehearsal room subjected to Ash’s absolutely mental visuals. According to him he made a mistake and everything got layered all at once creating this trippy effect. To paraphrase the Lord Bob Ross, I love happy accidents like that. Can't thank him enough for helping us out."

The track comes as the band head back into the studio to complete their new album for APF Records, after a series of personal tragedies put the brakes on it previously. In truth the break worked out for the best as it gave the songs already written, time to breathe. Although it was a traumatic and frustrating period, the band found revisiting the songs with a fresh perspective helped develop and re-energise them. After what felt like a long hiatus, a lot of rewrites and a whole lot of crazy ideas flying back and forward, The Hyena Kill have decided it's finally time to come together to finish their new album. Hopefully the music will speak for itself, a noisy and beautiful testimony to triumph over adversity and a quantum leap for a band who’ve played every dive bar in Blighty thrice over but who’ll never, ever forget their roots.

"The whole subject matter for the song 'Bury Me' stems from the phrase 'nocturnal pollution' - a disrupted form of sleep that is informed by internal and external forces alike", comments guitarist Sam Kubrick"The songs lyrics were written from the perspective of a person who is suffering from experiences such as night terrors and insomnia, and as a result dreads the torture of going to bed every night. When I first started the music for 'Bury Me', I had one pure intention which was to write the most quintessentially Shields track I possibly could. It ended up becoming heavily influence by our previous single 'Jordan' but as if it was written for our first album Life In Exile".

The band have also been announced to support Annisokay on their UK tour next month.

German prog metal trio The Hirsch Effekt share new single 'Granica'

German prog metal trio The Hirsch Effekt have revealed their new single 'Granica' - the fourth and final single from Urian, the new album due 29th September via Long Branch Records.

Stream 'Granica' and pre-order the new album here: https://thehirscheffekt.lnk.to/urian

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/nULBCoenqnA

Corona infection-related isolation forced Nils (guitar, vocals) and Ilja (bass, vocals) to carry out their planned songwriting session in two different places. When recovered from Covid, their songwriting time was nearly at an end. 'Granica' is the virtue born of need, because the band had no more time to allow for another epic, technical prog song. In hindsight, a happy circumstance for the album, since it allows for a circular track, a shoegaze-like post-rock breathing point. And with it, a slice of colour you rarely see in The Hirsch Effekt universe.

The lyrics describe the protagonist's consternation that he "woke up in another world" on February 24th, 2022, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This is made clear by his act of helplessness, hastily offering his driving services and The Hirsch Effekt's own trailer to an aid convoy to the Polish-Ukrainian border at short notice. Plagued by strong doubts during the journey as to whether this is really an effective way to get involved and help, it becomes clear at the first service area behind the German-Polish border: “we are by no means the only ones here who have the feeling 'You have to help'" and needed an outlet for their own actions. A formative journey, at the end of which there lies the following certainty: "Forget it now! Nothing, really nothing, will ever be the same.”

Three years after the release of their latest album Kollaps the band marks their return with the release of their upcoming full-length, entitled Urian, out 29th September via Long Branch Records

Urian is a deep musical dive into the increasingly obtrusive ambivalence between crises and everyday life. Significantly less conceptual than the 2020 album Kollaps, it is nevertheless an absolute evolution. Textual ciphers seem more intimate, relationships and references are apparently obvious. Socio-political topics are discussed, in which the musicians critically question themselves and current developments. In addition to democracy-destroying bots that nestle in people's heads in Instagram comments, The Hirsch Effekt gives a voice to those who don't have a voice, or to those for whom all the beautiful life is still waiting. From this dystopian, but clear understanding of the world and its values, a civilized hope arises, thanks to Urian.

After charting at #21 in the German album charts with previous album Kollaps, and formidable shows at Wacken Open AirFull Force FestivalArcTanGent and as recent headliners at the renowned Euroblast FestivalThe Hirsch Effekt have impressively established themselves in the German progressive metal landscape.

Cornish alt-rock quartet Haunt the Woods release new single 'The Line, Pt. II'

Cornish alt-rock quartet Haunt the Woods have released their evocative new single 'The Line, Pt. II', from their upcoming second album, Ubiquity, to be released 29th September via Spinefarm.

Pre-order the album here: https://HauntTheWoods.lnk.to/Ubiquity

Fresh from the band's smash success performances at Reading & Leeds festivals, you can watch/stream 'The Line, Pt. II', here: https://HauntTheWoods.lnk.to/Ubiquity

The band comment: "'The Line, Pt. II' is a reprise of the themes covered in our first EP The Line. As we grow older, society and the unrelenting struggle to survive seems to drain the colour out of life, leaving a grey, monochromatic existence. Perhaps if we reconnected with the beauty of life and had the time to find peace of mind, the colour would return. In glimpses it does."

A soul-stirring listen, the new single showcases Haunt the Woods at their best - with frontman Jonathan Stafford's soaring yet elegant vocals, and finished with a stunning solo from lead guitarist Phoenix Elleschild. Snatches of ElbowRadioheadJeff Buckley can be heard throughout, but the song still impressively remains uniquely Haunt the Woods.

Haunt the Woods are a curiously unique, effortlessly stunning band.

In the deepest reaches of the English countryside there is a sublime sound emanating from the landscape, and its name is Haunt the Woods. Timely and yet oddly timeless, this surprisingly youthful quartet span musical decades and worlds.

Recently signed with Spinefarm, it won't be long before you hear plenty more from these musical mavericks, and with good reason. Formed in the hinterlands between Plymouth, Devon, and Cornwall, Haunt the Woods deftly interweave alt-rock, folk, prog and pop with an epic level of pomp and poetic elegance that suggests a far longer tenure than their young years suggest. There are tips of the hat to Queen and MuseJeff Buckley and Radiohead, and a sprinkled-in tinge of Beatles-loving pop sensibility and Manchester Orchestra-esque poignancy: Haunt the Woods have that rare ability to conjure legacy while creating a bold sound that is newly their own.

With two warmly received EPs and a debut album, Opaque (2020) which was released in 2020, the stage has been set for their overdue introduction to the world, which began with their stunning new single 'Fever Dream'. Cinematic in scope, operatic in texture, new album Ubiquity is a fitting illustration of the band's prowess and talent.

Extreme metallers BLASPHEMER release re-recorded track and live video - 'Stabat Mater MMXXIII'

Italian extreme metal stalwarts Blasphemer have released a re-recorded version of their 2020 track ‘Stabat Mater MMXXIII’, featuring new drummer Francesco Vella. The track was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audio Siege Engineering (Obituary, Sunn 0))) ) and features a stunning live video filmed recently at the Metalitalia Festival in Italy.

Watch the video in full here: https://youtu.be/zJ0-udaFBHM
Stream the track here: https://Blasphemer.lnk.to/StabatMaterMMXXIIIPR

The band commented: "Recorded during a blazing live performance at Italy’s finest extreme metal festival, the official video of ‘Stabat Mater MMXXIII’ depicts Blasphemer in its element: a stage draped in red mist and fire, an audience exposed to profanity, human remains, nudity and blood.

"Completing the sensorial bombing of this fresh visual assault, the band recorded a renewed version of 2020’s live workhorse track ‘Stabat Mater’, to match the result of its current, well experienced live rendition: a sharpened drum work, an enriched guitar arrangement, an earthquaking, live-like loud mixing.”

The original version of the track, 'Stabat Mater' can be found on the band's album, The Sixth Hour, which was released by Candlelight Records in 2020 and showcases twelve songs of pure blackened-death metal. Fundamentally a concept album, The Sixth Hour's main theme is the way of the cross, i.e., the last day of Jesus Christ, the path that led him from the Gethsemane to Golgotha. The aim of the album is to depict Jesus as merely human, trying to transpose into music the agony he felt in the last day.
