Australian breakthrough heavy act Future Static announce debut album and stream single / video

One of Australia’s most talked about breakthrough heavy acts, Melbourne quintet Future Static are thrilled to unveil their highly anticipated full-length debut album, Liminality, out 24th November 2023 via Wild Thing Records. Alongside Liminality, the band have revealed the emotionally charged, hard hitting anthem 'Roach Queen', and its accompanying eye-catching music video, taken from the forthcoming record.

To coincide, the group’s first ever international jaunt to Europe and the UK kicks off this weekend, including dates with The Omnific (AU), plus appearances at legendary German festivals Reeperbahn and Euroblast. Following taking the Australian live circuit by storm, and the recent supercharged metal reimagining of ‘Gasolina’, the release of Liminality marks the next step in the band’s hugely promising career.

Singer Amariah Cook proclaims: “We’re so proud to finally release our first full-length album, which we’ve been tirelessly working on and teasing to crowds for the past two years. Everything about this album came from the heart and soul of the band. The best way to describe it? It is the physical representation of friendship, teamwork, and our unconditional love for music”. The album was produced, mixed, and mastered by Christopher Vernon (WindwakerThe Beautiful Monument). Artwork was helmed by guitarist Jack Smith, with Liminality portraying the space between materialising and deteriorating in serene nothingness."

New single 'Roach Queen' weaves together bouncing, pitch-shifted riffs, pummelling breakdowns, reverb-drenched ambiance, and an anthemic, catharsis-imbued chorus into a tapestry of grotesque brilliance. At the centre of it all is Amariah’s versatile performance that spans ominous spoken word, guttural roars, tortured shrieks, and soaring sung hooks. The impact of Amariah’s contributions here is elevated further considering the fact that the track derives its meaning and lyrics from a repressed episode in the vocalist’s youth.

“'Roach Queen' talks about a traumatic experience I had as a child in the first apartment my family and I lived in when we moved to Barcelona”Amariah recalls. “The place was infested by cockroaches, and for a long while, I was having nightmares where they would climb into my mouth while I slept, possibly causing a more severe illness to materialise at the time.”

The 'Roach Queen' music video, filmed and directed by the master Colin Jeffs (Make Them Suffer, Alpha Wolf), is heavily attached to the story Amariah portrays lyrically. However, Amariah wanted to add how that experience (and any of the darker experiences she may have lived in her past) is what has made her so powerful and independent now, hence choosing a ‘Queen’ as her character.

“The name 'Roach Queen' felt fitting to me”, explains Amariah. “It came instantly, along with the lyrics, as the song has overtones of a developed independence and strength that eventuated from this experience.” Amariah continues, “Colin absolutely nailed the execution, utilising horror aesthetics and the authoritative figure of the ‘Queen’ as a representation of overcoming personal demons and trauma.”

An innate fusion of metalcore, progressive metal, alternative rock, and pop sensibilities, Liminality is exemplified by its profound singles; visceral cut 'Roach Queen', the effervescent 'Plated Gold' - featuring guest vocals from Sean Harmanis of Make Them Suffer, and acclaimed earlier singles 'Waves' and 'Venenosa'. Liminality also highlights the group’s breathtaking lead vocal tandem, with bassist Kira Neil showcasing her vocal talents and magical chemistry alongside the electrifying Melbourne born, Barcelona raised front-woman Amariah Cook; underlined on the progressive labyrinth 'The Hourglass' and alt-pop-core sensation 'Chemical Lobotomy'.

Liminality represents residing in a state of limbo and emptiness, a fitting title for an album written during the extreme Melbourne lockdowns; depicting the band’s emotional state of the time. The band was no stranger to the effects of limbo, be that a writing process in pandemic-induced isolation, or the two-year-long gauntlet of in-demand domestic touring that followed, including major festivals and supporting acts such as prog metal superstars Jinjer (UA) and Eurovision alumni Voyager (AU), prior to releasing a full album. The record evolved into their most collaborative work to date, with all members’ unique musical voices present in a cohesive, yet diverse artistic statement. Using the incessant layers of soaring lead guitars, crunching riffs and dynamic cleans, trailed over by unique and stacked vocal melodies that Future Static are renowned for, the record ebbs and flows through a combination of different genre inspirations and themes.

German hard rockers Wucan sign with Long Branch Records; UK tour in October

Up-and-coming German hard rock band Wucan have announced their signing with German label Long Branch Records (SPV).

The Dresden quartet recently entered the German album charts for the first time in their career with their last album Heretic Tongue, followed by impressive performances at numerous European festivals.

The band will head to the UK for the first time next month, with shows in London, Glasgow, and Newcastle.

Dates as follows:

Oct 07: London, The Black Heart (tickets)
Oct 08: Glasgow, Audio (tickets)
Oct 09: Newcastle, Trillians Rock Bar (tickets)

Long Branch Records label manager Manuel Schönfeld comments: "With Wucan we expand our artist roster with a highly motivated and promising group that knows how to win you over, especially live. Wucan innovatively merge the most diverse rock genres and combine a legendary sound with today's time."

Wucan manager Karl Walterbach adds: "With Long Branch Records SPVWucan has now found a label partner that is perfectly positioned internationally. This allows us to make optimal use of the global networks of our booking agent MAD Tourbooking/Berlin. The first result will be a small UK tour in October 2023. We are looking forward to the upcoming cooperation."

Wucan break up ossified genre conventions. They develop something new with creativity on the basis of a rock tradition that has its origins in the late 1960s - and yet the band deliver something far beyond an Anglo-American musical heritage, leaning into the rock history of East Germany. Who after all remembers East German hard rockers like BabylonBerluc or Blitzz? It is these names that Wucan pay homage to, and with bandleader Francis Tobolsky, deliver one of the best new spirits in the German rock scene.

Make Them Beg For Death delivers savage beatdowns equally designed to pulverise and mesmerise. “It follows on from where Wrong One To Fuck With left off,” drummer Trey Williams promises. “We don’t need to participate in the technical death metal arms race. We’ve got the big guns, and we’ve proven that. It’s all about pointing them in the right direction, so to speak.”

Monstrous riffs, blast beats, unstoppable hooks, and earth-moving grooves define their catalogue. “We put our own twist on Death Metal,” explains co-vocalist/guitarist John Gallagher“We were like most bands, starting in the garage, drinking beer, having a little fun on the weekend, finding the right amps through trial and error. We blended aspects of bands we liked – Suffocation, Obituary, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse, among others; the dual vocal approach of Carcass – and made them our own. ‘Let’s make it moshy, let’s make it slammy.’”

To Dying Fetus, the mission is straightforward. “The philosophy is the same now as it was when the band started,” Gallagher confirms. “To write catchy riffs and to make it memorable. Whatever style of music you’re doing, make it something people want to hear repeatedly.”

Metal quartet Awakening Sun unveil 'Someone Else' single / video

Dutch / Lithuainian metal quartet Awakening Sun return with the I Am More EP, set for a 6th October release. The EP’s second single comes via the dynamic track, 'Someone Else,' which hits on all levels. Its new video can be seen below and showcases the band firing on all cylinders. It's a fresh, modern sound that is filled with groovy riffs, heavy-hitting choruses and captivating hooks.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/XpY6lxWxKeM

Awakening Sun state: “This new track, 'Someone Else,' is definitely one of the heaviest songs on the EP. Not only because of heavy riffs and blast beats, but also lyrically its message about self-underestimation, not feeling fulfilled. The character of the song is always questioning himself and is feeling depressed. We filmed the music video of us playing on a green screen and afterwards projected the footage on different buildings during the night to convey the dark and depressive message.

"With this release, we wanted to take the band's sound to a new level. We are always excited to work on our new material, because every band member has valuable creative input of the art that is being worked on at that moment. We are a mixture of heavy genres put into one cohesive set of music that punches through their listeners' ear drums with huge melodies, epic sections with big breakdowns. We’re very proud of this new release and thanks for checking it out.”

Dead Poet Society release double single & announce UK/European tour

Los Angeles quartet Dead Poet Society have returned with the not one, but two new tracks. Today, the band have shared their new double single ‘Running in Circles’ / ‘HURT’, complete with double feature music video, out now via Spinefarm

Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/WQkWVRudsaw

Stream 'Running In Circles' / 'HURT' here: https://deadpoetsociety.lnk.to/RunningInCirclesHURT

"'Running in Circles' explores the paranoid voices inside our heads," the band share. "It's about the struggle of being real with yourself - avoiding the 'fake.' Sometimes, it feels impossible to avoid. It was written about not being true to yourself and the shame that follows."

As for ‘HURT,’ the band explain: "There's not a lot in life that's more gut-wrenchingly frustrating than trying desperately for years to build a career and having little to show for it. From living on floors and friends' couches or out of your car, to working job after job just barely making ends meet, to going on tour and coming back with less money than you had before. We wrote this song as a symbol of that nagging doubt and insecurity. The doubt that consumes you and that can be triggered by people or events in your life, but more often than not again, it's the voice inside your head.”

The new tracks are the first taste of music from Dead Poet Society since 2021, when they released a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed and head-turning debut album '-!-' (The Exclamation Album). The expanded version added six new tracks - a healthy selection of stripped down songs, live tracks, and a remix. Dead Poet Society have accumulated over 72 million global streams and the band have also enjoyed two Top 15 singles at radio and key playlisting.

Dead Poet Society continue to spend as much time as possible on the road. Having owned the main stage at 2000trees festival this summer, as well as playing a select few sold out UK and European headline dates, the band have now announced an extensive UK/European headline tour, which will set the continent ablaze in February and March 2024.

Dead Poet Society have established themselves as an intense live act not to be missed. The band have previously toured with alt-rock powerhouses Biffy ClyroBadflowerHighly Suspect and BRKN Love; and they’ve played iconic festivals such as DownloadPinkpopRock Werchter and Reading & Leeds in recent years.

Introducing Hunter Oliveri: signs to Spinefarm & releases video for new single 'DUMB'

Hunter Oliveri doesn't profess to having it all figured out.

At just 18, the artist is still making sense of himself; who he is, what he stands for, where his life is going. He doesn't arrive as the next ready-made rockstar action figure cast in plastic. There is an unquestionable realness about the way he makes sense of life in real time through his music, after all.

But a star he most certainly is, with a surety of mind for what he wants: to create music that connects and inspires, and that will pour gasoline on the growing fire of rock's recent renaissance.

Spinefarm is pleased to announce that Hunter Oliveri has signed to the label's international roster. He has also shared a video for his new single 'DUMB'.

Check out the video for 'DUMB' here: https://youtu.be/x7obPYX9_Y0

Stream/purchase 'DUMB' here: https://hunteroliveri.lnk.to/DUMBID

'Dumb' boasts a baggy, distorted riff weaving around an earworm melody and a singalong chorus that finds Oliveri chewing over how "I made a home in the chip on my shoulder / I know I could change / but I'd rather be dumb."

The Gen Z-fronted clip will instantly transport you to your own gloriously misspent youth, when you were simply in search of the next feel-good moment - be it the next blunt, the next swill of beer, or the next hang with your significant other or crew. It also offers keen insight into Oliveri's sound and songwriting, not to mention his wild coif of curls.

It's a fitting look into the heart of a young and hungry artist, who is looking to hold onto and suck the marrow out of his youth and the right here, right now.

"My mom wants me to get a job, two jobs, everything's expensive as f*ck, I have friends making more on OnlyFans than college graduates/doctors, everything's dumb," Oliveri says. "So I tried to grab the feelings I have on the daily of what is the point of doing what my parents want me to do, when sh*t just feels dumb as f*ck."

He continues "I bet a lot of kids could relate to having people tell you to go to college, find a steady career, have a family, and be apart of this f*cked up system, when in reality, I just want to be a kid my entire life, chase girls, skate, smoke, hang with my friends, and make music. I hope the song connects with anyone who just wants to forget all their problems and live life without all the bullsh*t. Just rather be 'DUMB.'"

So what else do you need to know about Hunter Oliveri, whose previous single 'Kids' was tipped by Pigeons + Planes

His are songs that channel the alternative and grunge blueprint of his musical heroes - think Chris Cornell and SoundgardenBilly Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins - imbued with the playful opaqueness of Kurt Cobain's lyricism and the easy slacker hooks of Weezer.

Like all of Oliveri's music, it speaks to the messiness of growing up. It sounds exactly like that, too. He simply writes what he knows.

There are songs about partying too hard and songs about loving too much; songs about last night’s headrush highs and the morning-after's anxious comedown. There are songs for when you need the comfort of relatability, and there are songs for when you want to simply say "f*ck it all."

They are the product of the humble authenticity of someone who's grown up in a place no different to a million others the world over. You’ve likely never heard of Paso Robles, CA, and you likely never will again. There’s sunshine, strip malls, and vineyards that outnumber venues ten to one, where the nearby underground music scene of San Luis a few miles down the road is more accessible than anything resembling the bright lights of LA two hours to the south, or San Francisco the same distance north. "It's a boring city, but we make the most of it," Oliveri shrugs. "We'll go skating, or hang out and smoke. And anyway, it's fun to go moshing in someone's basement."

It’s no surprise, then, that Oliveri is used to creating more interesting scenes than those that existed outside his window. As a kid, he would do so in the stories he dreamt up in his bedroom. "I like writing stories about worlds I'd want to live in," he says, "which made my own world seem so much bigger."

Such creativity inevitably morphed into songwriting in his early teenage years - though music had long since embedded itself within him. "I was probably four years old when I first heard 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' around my parents’ house," he recalls of music's omnipresence in his life. "I never knew the name of the song but every time I heard it, I'd be like, sh*t, it's that song. It would give me this majestic feeling.”

He laughs that his mom holds a video recording of her son gamely plucking through a rendition of a Metallica song (to Oliveri's mind, it was ...And Justice For All epic 'One') at his Kindergarten graduation performance. His dad - an avid fan of Korn and Tool - meanwhile tells him that his parents met at Woodstock; not the peace-and-love of Woodstock '69, but, more aptly, the confusion-and-chaos of Woodstock '99.

A chance meeting with a local producer’s father while in a coffee shop with his grandpa aged 14 would be the first domino to fall in the story of Oliveri's rise to prominence. The rest is a history still to be written. "I've been so incredibly lucky, but I've manifested this, too," he says. "I've always known writing music would be my life. I just had to make it happen. It was hard to find kids around my city that play instruments and want to be in a band, but I’ve been writing songs every day in my bedroom since I was maybe 13 years old. It takes me to a different place."

Those songs are anthems for those disassociated with the world on their doorstep, the soundtrack to growing up marooned between a digital world that for Oliveri speaks of with distain as "rotting people’s brains," and a real one that’s more f*cked up by the day.

"I want to bring people into my world through my music," he adds. "I want people to feel something when they listen to my music, and to relate to me, and for me to be a friend and an outlet for them."

And as for everything else?

Well, he'll figure it out as he goes. Why not join him for the thrill ride?

Alt-Rockers The Hyena Kill return with new single 'Piece Of Hell' (APF Records)

Manchester atmospheric rock band The Hyena Kill return with some of their deepest material to date, with their ferocious new single ‘Piece Of Hell’, an emotive track about finally letting go of that poisonous person in your life.

Comments vocalist/guitarist Steven Dobb: "Our new single 'Piece Of Hell’ is taken from our forthcoming new album. It’s such an aggressive tune and feels like a return to our roots but gives nothing away as to the overall sound of the record. We've been playing it live for a while now and it’s as cathartic as it gets when we start ripping. It's even got a shredding solo which is a first for The Hyena Kill."

The chaotic video for the new track was made by Ash Tubb, lead singer and guitarist in Sugar Horse, whilst the track was produced/mixed by Andy Hawkins and Dave Draper looked after the mastering.

Dobb continues, "After seeing some of the great DIY videos Ash had done for his band, I asked if he would do one for us. It’s just us jamming in our grubby rehearsal room subjected to Ash’s absolutely mental visuals. According to him he made a mistake and everything got layered all at once creating this trippy effect. To paraphrase the Lord Bob Ross, I love happy accidents like that. Can't thank him enough for helping us out."

The track comes as the band head back into the studio to complete their new album for APF Records, after a series of personal tragedies put the brakes on it previously. In truth the break worked out for the best as it gave the songs already written, time to breathe. Although it was a traumatic and frustrating period, the band found revisiting the songs with a fresh perspective helped develop and re-energise them. After what felt like a long hiatus, a lot of rewrites and a whole lot of crazy ideas flying back and forward, The Hyena Kill have decided it's finally time to come together to finish their new album. Hopefully the music will speak for itself, a noisy and beautiful testimony to triumph over adversity and a quantum leap for a band who’ve played every dive bar in Blighty thrice over but who’ll never, ever forget their roots.

"The whole subject matter for the song 'Bury Me' stems from the phrase 'nocturnal pollution' - a disrupted form of sleep that is informed by internal and external forces alike", comments guitarist Sam Kubrick"The songs lyrics were written from the perspective of a person who is suffering from experiences such as night terrors and insomnia, and as a result dreads the torture of going to bed every night. When I first started the music for 'Bury Me', I had one pure intention which was to write the most quintessentially Shields track I possibly could. It ended up becoming heavily influence by our previous single 'Jordan' but as if it was written for our first album Life In Exile".

The band have also been announced to support Annisokay on their UK tour next month.
