Opening with sunny acoustic chords reminiscent of early 2000s radio hits, 'YEAH!' bursts into a feel-good verse carried by the distinct vocals of frontman Jake Wilson, before moving into what is perhaps the band’s most pronounced singalong chorus yet. In line with its bright and upbeat sound, Jake says the song is about: “living your best life and not caring what anyone else thinks.

“I imagine this song playing in the montage scene of an early 2000s bratty comedy film. Stylistically it’s a big shift for BYAM, but we wanted to bring beachy summer vibes to a fun and carefree song.”

The band teamed up once again with Canadian producer Sam Guaiana (Armageddon - 2021 LP), who flew to Australia earlier this year to record with the band at Beveridge Road Recording Studios in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges.

'YEAH!' is BYAM's second independent release, and follows their addictive February single 'Nevermind' which, on their recent run of intimate headline shows, proved to be a new fan-favourite. Sonically 'Nevermind' earmarked a new era for BYAM, and according to the band perfectly captured “the spirit of our band and our live show.” The single was swiftly added to rotation on triple j, and arrived ahead of a massive stint in the USA supporting Knuckle Puck and Real Friends, followed by an Australian tour joining Slowly Slowly on the road upon their return. BYAM also joined You Me At Six and Set It Off on their recent Australian run.

In 2021, Between You & Me’s acclaimed record Armageddon (Hopeless Records) took the band to new heights, featuring hit singles 'Deadbeat', 'Butterflies', 'Change' and 'Go To Hell' ft. Mikaila Delgado of Yours Truly. The electrifying 10-track record landed as triple j’s Spotlight Album on release, alongside an interview on the station’s Breakfast program, and has since clocked up over 13.5 million global streams in addition to support from BBC Radio 1 (UK), Spotify, and more. To celebrate the album, Between You & Me stepped out on their biggest headline Australian tour in 2022, finishing with a milestone sold-out hometown show at Melbourne’s The Corner Hotel. As the year drew to a close, the band took to the USA, joining American pop-punk outfit State Champs on an extensive month-long run.

With new singles 'YEAH!' and 'Nevermind' minting BYAM’s newly independent era, the band are more motivated than ever to continue their global takeover. Fans both at home and abroad can expect more new music and touring news to come.

Ihsahn announces new self-titled concept album presented in two versions

Art taps into the metaphysical and the archetypes of our existence - it lets us experience loss, death, love - it prepares us for all of those things in some way. That’s the value, that’s the perspective I wish to create from.” - Ihsahn

Ihsahn has announced the release of his new album on 16th February 2024 via Candlelight Records. The Norwegian progressive metal visionary has dared to push the realms of creative expressionism even further with his eighth studio offering. The release will embody two melodically interlinked versions of the same album: one prog metal, one fully symphonic, both creating a cinematically-influenced masterpiece that is simply, definitively entitled Ihsahn.

Ahead of the release date, Ihsahn has shared the frenetic first single 'Pilgrimage To Oblivion' with accompanying video filmed by Shaun Hodson at Loki Films. For the orchestral version of the track, a visualiser by Costin Chioreanu has been created.

Commenting on the new single, "'Pilgrimage to Oblivion' serves as a rather immediate introduction to the overarching musical and conceptual aspects of the album. The lyrics go directly into the storyline and the video is the first in a sequel of videos portraying the whole story."

Whilst his musical journey has been frequently revelatory, the masterful control of rhythm and movement displayed throughout Ihsahn shows his work as a songwriter and composer at its most focused and self assured. A gargantuan endeavour and one that Ihsahn professes to be one of the most complex projects he has ever undertaken, is a labyrinthine rabbit-hole of his own design; the scale of ambition immediately apparent. Wholly self-produced and scored over the course of three years, the metal version has been mixed by Jens Bogren, the orchestral version mixed by Joel Dollié and both versions were mastered by Tony LindgrenIhsahn freely admits that the process pushed him to his limits. It began, simply, with a piano.

Comments Ihsahn, “On average, I´ve been releasing a full-length album every second year since I was 16. And, you know, that has given me some opportunity to explore different options, so for my eighth full-length solo record, I thought, ‘okay, how can I do what I do best, but also raise the bar tenfold? At the heart of what I do is black metal, extreme distorted guitars and screaming, but since the earliest Emperor recordings you’ll hear the keyboard parts influenced by classic soundtracks by the likes of Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Bernard Herrmann, John Carpenter and so on. So, I approached the writing with the intent to present the material in its full-blown metal expression, but also to arrange the orchestral parts in such a way that they would work independently. Somehow an attempt to write a soundtrack within the structures of the full production, allowing me to explore different, and sometimes contrasting, variations of essentially the same music. In the end I wrote all the music as a piano short-score and arranged it for a typical band ensemble and orchestra, accordingly, making sure everything interlocked.”

It’s that compositional core that allowed Ihsahn to build the two records from the ground up – a Herculean feat for the self-professed, self-taught musician, but it is perhaps that very absence of formal training that allowed him to throw out the rulebook and simply follow his instincts, and the time afforded by the pandemic created the natural gap required to so heavily invest himself in the project. As Ihsahn explains, that self-induced pressure came from a desire to keep his loyal fanbase and himself interested, which is not only the defining feature of his latest record, but it’s also the central characteristic of his entire solo career.

“To create something worthwhile, you can’t aim for what an audience might expect, but you can aim to make something the best that it can be. When given the opportunity to make a record, it’d be arrogant to assume it’d be another Dark Side Of The Moon, or OK Computer, or Black Album, but somehow it’d be arrogant not to try!?! Admittedly, this is the hardest and most complex musical project I have ever done, and in the end, on a personal level, also the most gratifying. I really had to step up, and I learned so much in the process.”

And from the orchestral grandiosity of opening track 'Cervus Venator' - whichever side of Ihsahn you choose to sit down with first - the epic, soundtrack qualities and richly hewn textures of Ihsahn are immediately apparent. It is a masterwork by any standard, and the definitive expression of Ihsahn’s boundless capabilities as an artist. It’s a journey he’s eager for his dedicated fans to connect with.

Joining Ihsahn on this album are Tobias Ørnes Andersen and Tobias Solbakk on drums and percussion, with Ihsahn's son Angell Solberg Tveitan adding additional percussion and violins by Chris Baum. Artwork for the album was created by Ritxi Ostariz with all promotional photography by Andy Ford

Not satisfied to only create a dual-record, there is also a conceptual story which underpins both sides of Ihsahn – a pair of separate but interwoven Wagnerian narratives revolving around the traditional hero’s journey, and while Ihsahn is reticent to tell all, he is confident that meaning will soon emerge for listeners willing to show equal commitment.

"I've been honoured to work with some astounding visual artists on this, who were all given access to my scrapbooks, music, lyrics, stories, mood boards etc. It’s been amazing to see how they've all interpreted the material differently, but still in a way that binds everything together.

“It’s a privilege that I get to make music and travel the world to play my music. And when I say this is subjectively my greatest musical achievement so far, it has nothing to do with ego or prestige, but rather to do with gratitude for the experience. Art taps into the metaphysical and the archetypes of our existence- it lets us experience loss, death, love - it prepares us for all of those things in some way. That’s the value, that’s the perspective I wish to create from.”

About Ihsahn

Since 1991 Ihsahn has defied expectations and pushed boundaries. More than any other artist to emerge from the fertile black metal scene of the early ‘90s, Ihsahn has firmly established himself as an unpredictable maverick. As the founding frontman of Emperor he is universally lauded as one of extreme music’s most important and influential voices, and he stands as the figurehead for what was arguably black metal’s creative apex. What is even more important to note is that as a solo artist Ihsahn has all but outgrown the confines of that achievement, and over the course of seven records he has forged a sterling reputation for innovation and unabashed originality that’s as genre-bending as it is gleefully indifferent to the weight of expectation. Starting with the release of 2006’s critically acclaimed The Adversary he has never made the same record twice, and it is that resistance to a templated approach that has become the cornerstone of his gloriously creative second act.

Enterprise Earth release new single / video 'The Reaper's Servant'

Enterprise Earth have released their latest heavy hitter 'The Reaper's Servant', featuring the inimitable Darius Tehrani from Spite. Today's single is taken from the band's forthcoming new album Death: An Anthology, out on 2nd February via MNRK Heavy.

Pre-save Death: An Anthology here: https://enterprise-earth.ffm.to/deathananthology

Speaking on today's news, Enterprise Earth commented:

"'Reaper's' is definitely for the real metal heads out there. Overall, I'd say this is the most aggressive and straight-to-the-point track on Death: An Anthology as it comes out of the gate breathing fire and does not let up until it's over. We were elated to have Darius on the track as he absolutely nailed the vibe for his part. His unmistakable voice and energy really sent the whole track to a new level of confidence and power."

More than anything else, we share death in common. This universal eventuality unites us. In an evolutionary sense, it effectively ensures our equality. No matter who you are, you will die. Enterprise Earth explore death from a different perspective altogether. Rather than turn away from it, the U.S. quartet—Gabe Mangold [guitar, backing vocals, production], Brandon Zackey [drums], Travis Worland [vocals], and Dakota Johnson [bass]—face it head-on with their fifth full-length offering, Death: An Anthology. Against an apocalyptic soundtrack of battering ram double bass drums, gut-punching guitars, and disarmingly dynamic vocals, the group present their most immersive and inimitable vision yet.

“The album is tied together by the overarching concept of death,” Travis states. “It’s easy to think of death as a separation of consciousness from the body, but we’re delving into the death of self, individuality, and relationships—whether romantic or platonic. Dying takes many forms. I grew up extremely religious, so death has always been on my mind. In any religion, the afterlife is the umbrella for all of your beliefs. I tend to think of death from a more philosophical standpoint these days.”

The band have always incited mosh pits and thought in equal measure. Since emerging during 2014, Enterprise Earth have logged two back-to-back debuts in the Top 10 of the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart, while Loudwire cited Luciferous among the “50 Best Metal Albums of 2019.” Hysteria Mag heralded 2022’s The Chosen as “a veritable masterclass in experimentation and reinvention that shows a highly skilled band transcending its roots and making steps to become leaders of a field still being created,” while Metal Injection summed it up as “a strong statement.” Plus having toured with the likes of Thy Art Is Murder, Dying Fetus, Chelsea Grin, Fit For An Autopsy, Fallujah, Within Destruction, and more.

With Gabe once again in the producer’s chair, the musicians holed up in a Lake Tahoe cabin for nine days where they penned the bulk of Death: An Anthology. It marked the first time this line-up wrote together (and in-person) as well as with Travis on vocal duties.

“We fed off one another’s energy,” recalls Gabe“These songs felt cohesive because of that. We all had a hand in the composition.”

In the end, death may be inevitable, but you can rely on Enterprise Earth for a release in the meantime.

“We wanted to make an album that feels like who we are as a collective,” the band agreed. “On the one hand, we hope you have fun listening to it. On the other, just know, ‘Death is real and it comes for us all’. One day, we won’t be here anymore. While we’re alive, we want to enjoy it.”

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/Thw7jd8d0hA

The band comment: "'Soul Chasm' illustrates the internal struggle for peace, revealing our tendency to be unkind to ourselves and how the fear of failure can dim the vibrancy of our existence.

"We are proud to announce our signing with Century Media! The label is a monumental force within the metal world, and we are honoured to now become part of such an incredible legacy. We cannot wait to see what the future holds."

Century Media's Mike Gitter, Vice President of A&R, states: "HERIOT are not merely a landmark band for this generation of UK metal but a benchmark for a new generation of heaviness. They meld the brutal with the cerebral in a way that's uniquely theirs. HERIOT has carved their own path without compromise and Century Media is proud to be partners in that."

The new single and signing continues HERIOT's ascendancy as the pre-eminent new force in the UK heavy scene. 'Soul Chasm' is the first new material from the group since their support shows with Architects in the Summer and their mighty 'Demure' single (14th February, Church Road Records).

HERIOT's debut EP Profound Morality (2022) catapulted the quartet into the global spotlight, with praise worldwide and a debut, sold-out, headline tour across the UK. The band have since supported Rolo TomassiLamb Of GodThy Art Is Murder, and performed to packed tents at Download Festival2000treesWacken Open AirBloodstockMystic Festival and many more, gathering a legion of fans in the process.

Fully-focused and with a razor-sharp edge, the awe-inspiring double-vocal attack of Jake Packer and Debbie Gough is all-conquering; the titanic support of Erhan Alman (guitar) and Julian Gage (drums) rock-solid.

HERIOT have deservedly been grabbing attention with all four pairs of hands, weaponising metallic sludge and hardcore, unholy levels of distortion, speed and gut-punching talent. Elements of NailsKnocked LooseCode Orange, and Vein.fm combine and collide to exhilarating effect, creating a sound that is truly groundbreaking, fully worthy of the notice the band are achieving.

In their short recent history HERIOT have caught the attention of Pitchfork, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Brooklyn Vegan, Kerrang!, Revolver, and Knotfest, among many others, "one of the most promising young bands in modern metalcore", and "probably the best new metal band in Britain".

Darkest Hour announce tenth album Perpetual | Terminal

Darkest Hour have announced their tenth album, Perpetual | Terminal will be released on 23rd February 2024 via MNRK Heavy. The band have introduced the new album by sharing the video for the title track.

Watch the video to title track 'Perpetual | Terminal' here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUWfCfKxQv4

Pre-order Perpetual | Terminal here: https://darkesthour.ffm.to/perpetualterminal

"This is a whole Darkest Hour album in one song," the band says. "It felt like the perfect album opener, eventually became the title track, and therefore is the perfect place to start as we present this new album to the world. Lyrically, it touches on all of the themes of the record — an album centered around the duality of survival and rebirth. Or, you could just say, some new music from old friends who just won't ever give up."

Darkest Hour, as a whole, have weathered time, trends, and tides of change and stand stronger nearly three decades since their formation. Their unique sonic style incorporates death metal exorcisms, thrash recklessness, hardcore punk attitude, and melodic catharsis at the speed of a circle pit.

"The record's theme centers around the duality of survival while embracing rebirth,'" says Schleibaum"We keep killing parts of ourselves to make new parts and survive. The story of the record is the story of the band. We're still here, and we're giving the world a body of work that's representative of our music today. We've realized relationships, tours, good times, everything that seems to give life meaning, is terminal — and will inevitably end. Nevertheless, we're 46-year-old dudes who love this music enough to put up with the trials and tribulations of being artists in a touring band."

Darkest Hour clawed their way out of the DMV area in the USA in 1995. Throughout the ensuing years, they tallied tens of millions of streams and quietly built a diehard fan base. Canvasing the globe, they packed thousands of shows and touched down on every continent, save Antarctica. Along the way, they notably notched five Top 3 debuts on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart. 2017's Godless Prophets & the Migrant Flora marked the group's third #1 bow on the latter in addition to crashing the Top 10 of the Top Vinyl Albums Chart. It also represented a creative and critical high watermark. Beyond praise from RevolverEXCLAIM!, and more, MetalSucks rated it a rare perfect score of "5-out-of-5" and hailed it as "the best album Darkest Hour have ever made." New Noise cited it as "one of the best of 2017," and Metal Hammer dubbed it "a monumental return." PopMatters crowned it "a masterclass in following your beliefs no matter where they might take you."

Darkest Hour will hit the road from tomorrow, 15th November, touring across the USA with Exodus and Fit For An Autopsy throughout December.

Mike Schleibaum– guitar
Nico Santora - guitar

Progressive sludge outfit Lord Dying release new animated video 'The Endless Road Home'

Portland progressive sludge masters Lord Dying have unveiled their haunting new animated video for 'The Endless Road Home'. It's the closing track of their long-awaited new full-length, Clandestine Transcendence, which is released 19th January 2024 via MNRK Heavy.

Watch the video to 'The Endless Road Home' here: https://youtu.be/Yuw4F8hRyCc

Frontman Erik Olson comments on the latest single: "'The Endless Road Home' is dedicated to all the road dogs, travellers, bands, crew, people that make tours happen, people that go to shows and general rabble rousers. We salute you.”

Lord Dying transform tragedy into triumph. From the earliest rumblings of their first demo and self-titled EP (both issued in 2011), through the piledriving force of Summon The Faithless (2013) and crushing despair of Poisoned Altars (2015), the band have conjured masterfully melancholic heavy music for the misanthropic, with grit and grime.

In 2019, they delivered Mysterium Tremendum, a record Kerrang! declared a “prog-metal masterpiece.” The heady and adventurous existential meditation on death kicked off a trilogy and that story continues in 2023 with an increasingly ambitious follow-up, the aptly named Clandestine Transcendence.

Lord Dying cofounders Erik Olson (guitar, vocals) and Chris Evans (guitar) are joined by Alyssa Mocere (former bassist for Eight Bells), and Kevin Swartz (current drummer of Tithe). Chicago Reader crowned Mysterium Tremendum“a beautiful meditation on tragedy.” Produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Code Orange, Kvelertak) at his God City Studios, Clandestine Transcendence steps even further into the great unknown, filled with riffs and vibes.

Mysterium Tremendum (Latin for “awe-inspiring mystery” or “terrible mystery,” depending on one’s view of existence) began a narrative centered on a central character the band calls The Dreamer, a conceptual theme that drove expansive, sometimes monstrous, and even plaintive and vulnerable music. Olson describes The Dreamer as an immortal being who wants to die. On Clandestine Transcendence, he gets that wish.

Woven throughout the songs, that story and its rich thematic material inform an immersive listen. Tension, drama, and atmosphere abound all over songs like 'The Universe Is Weeping' and 'Unto Becoming.' The massive scope and melodic vocals found on album three expand further on Clandestine Transcendence. Sharpened songwriting, emphasising hooks, helps push both extremes of the band beyond prior limits. Simply put, the softer side is even dreamier; the heavy side is twice as brutal.

Erik Olson – vocals/guitar
Chris Evans – guitar
Alyssa Maucere – bass/vocals
Kevin Swartz – drums

Plini releases new single/video 'Still Life' featuring Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders)

Plini has released a new single and video, 'Still Life,' featuring Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders. It is the second single to be released by the talented Australian guitarist and songwriter from his brand new EP Mirage which is due out on 1st December.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/4iKzZ7FeZuE
Preorder Mirage EP here: https://www.plini.co

Plini comments: “It's hard to know where to start with this song - it contains some of my favourite abstract drumming by Chris Allison, amazing bass playing and some very unsettling mixing by Simon Grove, and is the first song I’ve shared from the EP featuring live string arrangements by my longtime friend AJ Minette. It’s also my first recording using an oud. Then there’s the video, my usual collaborators Jamie McVicker and Declan Blackall managed to make something that feels, in the best way possible, like more of a weird audio visualiser than a “proper” music video, and Emily Jansz created the perfect set for it. You should have smelled the room after having a raw fish in it all day!”

Commenting on the collaboration with Tosin AbasiPlini adds, Tosin was one of the main inspirations for me getting into writing guitar-centric music in the first place. His band, Animals As Leaders, took me on some of my first tours around the world and we’ve since become good friends, so to have him play on one of my songs is something that teenage me would never even have dreamed of. Such a treat!”

Forthcoming EP Mirage features 5 new tracks, a collection featuring live strings, piano, oud and a guitar solo from Animals As LeadersTosin Abasi alongside Plini's dexterous performance, there is plenty of sonic reverie still to come as 2023 begins to draw to a close. And with his biggest Australian tour production to date taking place earlier this year, the sky and perhaps even the galaxy is barely the limit for Plini as he ventures into a new creative phase, beckoning you along for the ride.

Plini adds, "Writing for the EP began shortly after the release of Impulse Voices at the end of 2020, while Australia was still in lockdown. The majority of the production was finished by the end of 2021, but once touring resumed, the project had to be put on the shelf for a little while, after deciding that it would be better to give it the attention it deserved than try to finish it in between flights and tours and other commitments. The wait was worth it (at least in my opinion) - couldn't be happier with how it turned out!"

After two years of waiting patiently, Plini sprang back into action in 2022, with back-to-back sold out headline tours of Australia, India and Scandinavia, festival appearances in Australia, UK, Germany and Portugal, and performing in some of Australia’s finest theatres supporting Northlane

Always delivering mind-bending musicality from all angles, Plini has previously released two full length albums, 2016's Handmade Cities and 2020's Impulse Voices, as well as multiple EPs, singles and contributing credits with various other artists. Nominated for Live Guitarist of the Year in 2018 at the National Live Music AwardsPlini has also previously toured alongside Sleep TokenPeriphery and TesseracT.

Plini is currently on tour in North America, catch him at the following dates:

German metalcore quartet MAVIS announce debut album and stream new single 'Calypso'

German heavy music ensemble MAVIS, featuring vocalist Phil Donay, guitarist Manu Weller, bass player Mo Amrein, and drummer Jakob Schulz-Klein, have announced their debut full-length record, Grief is no Ally, to be released 15th December via Arising Empire

To celebrate the news, the band have released their new single 'Calypso', a track that showcases their exceptional talent in composing and narrative lyricism.

Pre-order Grief is no Ally here: https://arisingempire.com/griefisnoally

'Calypso' marks the band's first creative endeavour since the exit of founding member and chief songwriter Robin Dachtler, offering a surreal odyssey that navigates the often essential transformations life imposes.

As the piece evolved, it increasingly symbolised the band's own brush with disbandment. "It felt as though MAVIS was doomed just as it began to flourish. Yet, we endured those challenging times, and akin to the song, we were drawn to a faint yet alluring glimmer of hope that pierced through the gloom. Clinging to that light, we now find ourselves more united and resilient than before," reflects vocalist Phil. With its compelling narrative and emotive depth, 'Calypso' emerges as a powerful anthem sure to make an enduring impact.

The title of the record stands for 11 stories of different forms of grieving, ranging from the dark and negative sides to the positive and healthy aspects of embracing grief, letting go.

MAVIS planned the release of a full length in 2020 but were immediately struck with multiple setbacks in their young history. Not only did the beginning of the pandemic hit them right at the outset of their journey but so too did line-up changes due to illness, mental issues or members giving up on making music entirely. Just as they started playing again roughly eighteen months ago, their bad luck peaked with a studio fire in which they lost instruments, equipment and all merchandise. Right around that time, the two remaining members of MAVIS found a new drive, looking to complete their line-up once again. Since then the quartet have worked tirelessly on putting all their experiences into the songs that now make this jewel of a debut record. Going into the studio with a “nothing is holy”-attitude to produce the best music they can, their efforts paid off, finally, for everyone to hear.
