Ihsahn releases new single/video 'The Distance Between Us' ahead of album release

Art taps into the metaphysical and the archetypes of our existence - it lets us experience loss, death, love - it prepares us for all of those things in some way. That’s the value, that’s the perspective I wish to create from.” - Ihsahn

Ihsahn has released the final single to be taken from his forthcoming self-titled album. 'The Distance Between Us' introduces us to the more melancholic, spacious side of the release. Accompanying the track is a haunting new video, a continuation of the conceptual storyline which has been spread across previous singles, 'Pilgrimage To Oblivion' and 'Twice Born', all filmed by Shaun Hodson at Loki Films.

New album, definitively titled Ihsahn, will be released on 16th February 2024 via Candlelight Records. Daring to push the realms of creative expressionism even further with his eighth studio offering, the Norwegian progressive metal visionary will release two melodically interlinked versions of the same album: one prog metal, one fully symphonic, both creating a cinematically-influenced masterpiece.

Commenting on the new track,"The first two singles were taken from the beginning of the conceptual narrative, generating the hubris and determination required. With this last single, we’re getting closer to the end of the story and hence both music and lyrics express a more reflective and melancholic perspective."

Whilst his musical journey has been frequently revelatory, the masterful control of rhythm and movement displayed throughout Ihsahn shows his work as a songwriter and composer at its most focused and self assured. A gargantuan endeavour and one that Ihsahn professes to be one of the most complex projects he has ever undertaken, is a labyrinthine rabbit-hole of his own design; the scale of ambition immediately apparent. Wholly self-produced and scored over the course of three years, the metal version has been mixed by Jens Bogren, the orchestral version mixed by Joel Dollié and both versions were mastered by Tony LindgrenIhsahn freely admits that the process pushed him to his limits. It began, simply, with a piano.

Comments Ihsahn, “On average, I´ve been releasing a full-length album every second year since I was 16. And, you know, that has given me some opportunity to explore different options, so for my eighth full-length solo record, I thought, ‘okay, how can I do what I do best, but also raise the bar tenfold? At the heart of what I do is black metal, extreme distorted guitars and screaming, but since the earliest Emperor recordings you’ll hear the keyboard parts influenced by classic soundtracks by the likes of Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Bernard Herrmann, John Carpenter and so on. So, I approached the writing with the intent to present the material in its full-blown metal expression, but also to arrange the orchestral parts in such a way that they would work independently. Somehow an attempt to write a soundtrack within the structures of the full production, allowing me to explore different, and sometimes contrasting, variations of essentially the same music. In the end I wrote all the music as a piano short-score and arranged it for a typical band ensemble and orchestra, accordingly, making sure everything interlocked.”

It’s that compositional core that allowed Ihsahn to build the two records from the ground up – a Herculean feat for the self-professed, self-taught musician, but it is perhaps that very absence of formal training that allowed him to throw out the rulebook and simply follow his instincts, and the time afforded by the pandemic created the natural gap required to so heavily invest himself in the project. That self-induced pressure came from a desire to keep his loyal fanbase and himself interested, which is not only the defining feature of his latest record, but it’s also the central characteristic of his entire solo career.

Joining Ihsahn on this album are Tobias Ørnes Andersen and Tobias Solbakk on drums and percussion, with Ihsahn's son Angell Solberg Tveitan adding additional percussion and violins by Chris Baum. Artwork for the album was created by Ritxi Ostariz with all promotional photography by Andy Ford

Not satisfied to only create a dual-record, there is also a conceptual story which underpins both sides of Ihsahn – a pair of separate but interwoven Wagnerian narratives revolving around the traditional hero’s journey, and while Ihsahn is reticent to tell all, he is confident that meaning will soon emerge for listeners willing to show equal commitment.

About Ihsahn

Since 1991 Ihsahn has defied expectations and pushed boundaries. More than any other artist to emerge from the fertile black metal scene of the early ‘90s, Ihsahn has firmly established himself as an unpredictable maverick. As the founding frontman of Emperor he is universally lauded as one of extreme music’s most important and influential voices, and he stands as the figurehead for what was arguably black metal’s creative apex. What is even more important to note is that as a solo artist Ihsahn has all but outgrown the confines of that achievement, and over the course of seven records he has forged a sterling reputation for innovation and unabashed originality that’s as genre-bending as it is gleefully indifferent to the weight of expectation. Starting with the release of 2006’s critically acclaimed The Adversary he has never made the same record twice, and it is that resistance to a templated approach that has become the cornerstone of his gloriously creative second act.

French metalcore quintet LANDMVRKS return with a video for their brand new single 'Creature', out now via Arising Empire.

The band teamed up with cinematic genius Pavel Trebukhin (TriviumImminence) in collaboration with Le Turk for the music video, which has a distinct Stranger Things feel, blending eerie mystery with LANDMVRKS' explosive energy.

Check out the video for 'Creature' here: https://youtu.be/MTfot89Ddqc

After dedicating time to honing their craft, LANDMVRKS emerge with what they confidently call their "best ever result." 'Creature' is more than a song; it's an experience that encapsulates the essence of the band's evolution and their relentless pursuit of musical excellence. The single confirms their commitment to pushing boundaries and delivers a unique, immersive experience for their fans.

The band comment:

"'Creature' is the first single from LANDMVRKS' new chapter, which explores the fears we bury deep inside ourselves instead of exploring and facing up to them. They end up resurfacing even stronger. The creature taking possession of the body is a metaphor for this."

LANDMVRKS will embark on a UK/European headline tour later this year, with special guests The Devil Wears Prada and Like Moths To Flames

UK dates are as follows:

May 12: Manchester Academy 2 [LOW TICKETS]
May 14: Birmingham XOYO [LOW TICKETS]
May 15: Leeds Stylus
May 16: London Electric Brixton

Tickets are on sale here: https://www.landmvrks.com/

Formed in 2014, LANDMVRKS signed a record deal with Arising Empire in 2018 to release their second studio album Fantasy. The record followed the band's independently released debut album Hollow in 2016, which was entirely produced by Florent Salfati (vocals) and Nicolas Exposito (guitar).

Continuing to build their name with their own fresh take on metalcore, the release of Fantasy saw LANDMVRKS travel the world, playing in Japan, embarking on several headline tours and supporting While She Sleeps and Stray From The Path on a UK/European tour.

While on the road, LANDMVRKS focused on writing material for their third album Lost In The Waves, released in 2021 via Arising Empire. Recorded at Salfati's studio (Homeless Records), the production of Lost In The Waves was the band's most accomplished and organic to date, showcasing their highly distinctive and uncompromised sound.

LANDMVRKS are:

Florent Salfati - vocals
Rudy Purkart - bass
Nicolas Exposito - guitar

Century Media Records welcomes Orbit Culture

Century Media Records is proud to announce the signing of Sweden’s modern metal standard bearers, Orbit Culture. Hailing from the small town of Eksjö, Sweden (located between the revered metal cities of Gothenburg and Stockholm), the quartet (guitarist and vocalist Niklas Karlsson, guitarist Richard Hansson, bassist Fredrik Lennartsson and drummer Christopher Wallerstedt) have grown into a global force. They seamlessly meld together riffs that are equal parts thrash, death metal and industrial with arresting hooks and a layered atmosphere that invites comparison to GojiraMetallica and Static-X while carving out something that is uniquely their own.

Orbit Culture’s 2023 album, Descent and their subsequent EP release, The Forgotten topped many recent year-end lists including Metal Hammer who described the album as: “a formidable entwining of modern metal’s most effective and exciting strands into an impressive milestone.” Exhaustive worldwide touring and a steady stream of crowd-pummeling festival slots across the globe, have set the stage for something much larger.

Says Orbit Culture: “Century Media is home to some of today's biggest metal bands out there and we couldn't be any happier to be part of their roster. We look forward to bringing you new music in the future and working closely together with Century Media's world class team!”

They are part of both metal and Century Media's future in a very exciting way.”

Before initiating work on their next LP and Century Media debut, Orbit Culture will tour North America with legendary metal acts, Machine Head and Fear Factory as well as newcomers Gates to Hell on the “Slaughter The Martour” tour. The US and Canadian run will continue the Swedish band’s exhaustive work in the territory which has included tours with In Flames and Avatar and won Orbit Culture a rabid fan-base and high placement on Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal “Devil’s Dozen” year-end chart. At the time of this announcement, the band is #1 on Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal. Following the U.S. tour, Orbit Culture will then embark on an extensive tour of Europe (UK dates sold-out), fittingly titled, the “Descending Into Madness” tour.

“We are beyond excited to be working with Orbit Culture and their team at 5B (Management),” adds Mike GitterCentury Media Vice President of A&R, North America. “They’ve carved an indelible mark on the worldwide metal scene through vision, determination, and hard work. Swiss psych trio Dirty Sound Magnet release new video 'Flowers, Angels and Chaos'

Evocative psychedelic rock trio Dirty Sound Magnet have released a new music video for 'Flowers, Angels and Chaos', from their latest album Dreaming In Dystopia, out now via Wild Thing Records

Watch the video for 'Flowers, Angels and Chaos' here: https://youtu.be/BM451FbF6bw

The band comment: "Shot in December 2023 in Barcelona during the release tour of our album Dreaming in Dystopia. We took a stroll in the city and started talking about how cool it would be to shoot a music video. Maxime (Cosandey, drums) looked at me and said: "let's just do it now". So we spent two nights in the streets of Barcelona shooting this. This nights were probably our most productive off days ever. And then the tour went on..."

With the release of Dreaming In Dystopia, Dirty Sound Magnet have solidified themselves as one of the most inventive and adventurous vintage rock bands in the scene, with a formidable touring schedule to match. Comprised of longtime friends and band members Stavros Dzodzos (guitar, vocals), Marco Mottolini (bass, backing vocals), and Maxime Cosandey (drums, backing vocals), Dirty Sound Magnet have entered a new era with their latest album, exploring themes of chaos and introspection with a blend of the rock sounds the members know so well, and atmospheric, kaleidoscopic arrangements that incorporate new textures and genre influence.

About Dirty Sound Magnet:

Switzerland’s Dirty Sound Magnet are an unstoppable, unbreakable force of rock. The uniqueness of their mesmerizing music and kinetic live performances has won audiences the world over. Their show is unpredictable; shamanic stage presence, rock star charisma, instrumental prowess, poetic vocals, tantalizing dynamics. As teenagers hailing from Fribourg, Stavros Dzodzos (guitar, vocals), Marco Mottolini (bass, backing vocals), and Maxime Cosandey (drums, backing vocals) devoured hundreds of albums, while rehearsing with great intensity. Their passion rapidly turned into an addiction and total dedication to their art, crafting a sound that has been likened to a fusion of Led Zeppelin's energy and instrumental virtuosity, Iggy Pop's raw energy, and The Doors' mysticism, additionally imbued with modern psych influences of bands like Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. This stylistic pedigree, along with thought-provoking lyrics reflecting contemporary social turmoil, Dirty Sound Magnet have created their own distinct musical formula.

In only a few short years since the band's formation, Dirty Sound Magnet swiftly established themselves within Europe’s burgeoning psychedelic rock scene, extensively touring the continent throughout 2017 to 2020. Since the release of the band’s third and most successful studio album DSM-III, Dirty Sound Magnet have performed over 130 shows, including sold-out tours in the UK, Germany, and Mexico, won the Swiss Live Talents award for ‘Best Swiss Rock Band’ for the second time, previously taking it home for the band's 2017 debut album, Western Lies.

Dirty Sound Magnet's music is in a constant state of evolution, and their upcoming record, Dreaming In Dystopia, due on October 20, 2023, via Australian label Wild Thing Records, is a testament to their artistic progression.

Mastiff release crushing new video 'Serrated' ft. Harry Nott (Burner); announce new album Deprecipice

Mastiff have announced their forthcoming album, Deprecipice, will be released on 22nd March via MNRK Heavy. The new release features an onslaught of special guests including Ethan Lee McCarthy from Primitive ManHarry Nott from BurnerDan James from XIII and Rob Scott from Yersin.

The band have introduced the caustic new album by sharing a very special video for their first single, 'Serrated ft. Harry Nott (Burner)'.

Watch the video for 'Serrated ft Harry Nott (Burner)' here: https://youtu.be/BnDtOP9IIOQ

Pre-order Deprecipice here: https://mastiff.ffm.to/deprecipice

The first single that Mastiff have unleashed from Deprecipice is the furiously aggressive 'Serrated' which features blistering guest vocals from Harry Nott, the vocalist for South London’s Burner, whose debut album It All Returns to Nothing was one of the hottest debuts of 2023 featuring in Metal Hammer 10 Best Death Metal Albums of 2023 & 50 Best Albums of 2023, released on Church Road Records. Also appearing on the new single, ripping a Slayer inspired guest solo, is Dan James, guitarist in Hull band XIII, who played with Mastiff on their 2023 tour with theatrical metallers, Avatar.

Commenting on the new single, vocalist Jim Hodge said: “Lyrically the track is about the ‘bullsh*t machine’, people blowing smoke up your a*se but you try to stay grounded. It’s too easy to fall foul of the reverse of imposter syndrome. We met Harry and the Burner boys when they came to Hull when they were supporting Employed to Serve. It turned out Burner were fans of us and after about 30 seconds of them playing we all became some of their biggest fans too.”

Adds guest vocalist Harry Nott (Burner): “'Serrated' is a relentless track and the vibe clicked instantly - I went into the studio and smashed it in a couple of takes with some quickly penned lyrics. Mastiff are the epitome of darkness, so I went hard on some apocalyptic imagery.”

Everything Mastiff does is in the name of intensity. Since forming amid the misery of Kingston-upon-Hull in 2013, the five-piece have crashed extreme metal, sludge and hardcore together to create the most brutal sonic onslaughts possible, all in the name of keeping their music fresh, raw and seething.

Signing to MNRK Heavy three years ago, Mastiff’s commitment to blunt-force aggression remains untempered. Their 2021 album, Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth, was described by Blabbermouth’s Dom Lawson as a “horrifying slab of disgust” and “a sustained scream in the face of uncontrollable madness”. Now comes its long-anticipated follow-up: Deprecipice – an album that, somehow, smacks even harder than anything this band have unchained before, produced by longtime collaborator Joe Clayton (Wallowing, Ithaca, Tuskar) at Manchester’s No Studio. The beguiling artwork that runs throughout the album is by Paul Phillips at the award winning True Spilt Milk Designs, another long time collaborator with the band.

“We’ve gone quite a lot towards a hardcore sound,” says Hodge“Where the last one was more death metal, this one’s a lot more staccato: a lot more defined, riff-wise.”

Unlike so many of their extreme metal peers right now, though, Mastiff didn’t source this rejuvenated savagery from the anxieties and frustrations of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the lockdowns ended and real life started to resume in 2021 and 2022, Hodge and Lee noticed the spirits of the world around them lifting. Feelings of trauma and isolation were beginning to enter people’s rear-view mirrors – and it was an overcoming that the duo couldn’t relate to. Lee was mourning the loss of his mother, while Hodge realised he was still grieving over the death of his five-day-old son, Isaac, in 2010.

“The album’s called Deprecipice, and that pretty much sums up where me and James were when we wrote it,” says the singer. “We were both standing back on the edge of a depressive void. You have to keep that primal feeling,” Hodge continues. “I think, if you take too much time, you start to second-guess yourself. We try to be as true to ourselves as we can.”

With DeprecipiceMastiff have made a magnum opus that bleeds with genuine pain. As earnest as it is ferocious, it’s already an album of the year candidate for a year that’s only just beginning.

Mastiff hit the road in March touring the UK, including London’s legendary The Black Heart with North East extreme metal outfit Yersin. Pick up tickets here.

Even more impressive considering they first hit the stage in 2020, with their live career then immediately halted by the Covid pandemic.

Death Of The Party will only up the ante: an all-out hard rock explosion of classic heavy metal, 80s sleaze and horror, with elements of MurderdollsAvenged Sevenfold, and beyond. Recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda (Bring Me The HorizonTwin Atlantic, and many more), Death Of The Party is a huge record: anthemic, dark, punchy and powerful. You only need to listen to first single, the floorfiller that is the metallic-edged 'Left For Dead' (watch here). South Of Salem are a band here to not mess around.

Alt-rock quartet El Moono announce debut album The Waking Sun, and stream new single

Alternative Brightonian quartet El Moono are delighted to announce their debut album, The Waking Sun, to be released 10th May via Lockjaw Records

As if that weren't enough, the band have also released their highly atmospheric, thunderous new single 'The First Man On Mars'.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/gQ5gQFmg6iA

Stream here: https://elmoono.lnk.to/firstmanonmars

Pre-orders for The Waking Sun coming soon.

The band comment: "Modern life looks more like a dystopia every day - the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and billionaires are planning their escape to Mars. 'The First Man On Mars' is a comment on the billionaire space race, and how we’re allowing those billions to be invested in a vanity project, rather than problems that affect us all on earth. Sometimes we feel like we’re stuck in the Truman Show, with no escape from our predetermined fates. Musically, the track sums up our band’s divergent style of songwriting, with verses of world-music tinged pop suddenly juxtaposed by doom-metal sludge sections, and accentuated by the biggest riff we’ve ever written."

El Moono have announced three headline shows ahead of the album's release.

Dates are as follows:

Feb 29: Cardiff The Moon
Mar 01: Nottingham Chameleon
Mar 02: Luton Castle

The long-awaited debut marks an exciting turn for El Moono toward the darker and more abrasive - a more mature release from a band already marked for greatness.

The Waking Sun follows El Moono's highly-regarded 2022 Temple Corrupted EP (released via Lockjaw Records). Previous tours alongside Black PeaksHaggard Cat, St Pierre Snake Invasion, and Press to MECO elevated El Moono within the new British underground, and the EP release garnered notable praise from Metal Hammer, Kerrang! and Guitar World. With influences of rock, hardcore, metal and grunge, the band's off-kilter and oftentimes mind-bending riffs, emotive songs and expressive lyricism combine to create a sound that’s difficult to pigeonhole.

Many worlds come together. A mix of vibe, technique and artistic creativity meets destructive breakdowns, provoking guitar riffs and catchy choruses. With finesse, the four guys from south Germany strike the perfect balance between the brutality of the deliberately used deathcore elements while incorporating a massive production and exciting grooves that you just want to dance to. Avralize stands for perception through sound. That's why the band has set itself the task of using certain stylistic devices, such as futuristic sounds and melodies to cast a spell over their fans and let them wander into distant worlds.

Severin commented: "We are thrilled to share the exciting news of our partnership with Arising Empire. With their support, we can now concentrate on realizing our vision for the band and immerse ourselves even more in what we love most: creating music. Our first release with Arising Empire will feature a particularly special song titled "Lotus".

"The essence of the song revolves around the profound theme of letting go of the past. This signifies a transformative process of shedding old burdens, relationships, or beliefs to make way for new growth and change. Change is often perceived as intimidating and frightening, yet for us, it became essential to break free from self-imposed limitations and embrace the freedom to pursue our true desires, regardless of external opinions. Authenticity lies in being true to oneself and removing anything that obstructs the expression of our genuine selves—a step that anyone is capable of taking."

Having shared the stage with scene heavyweights like GhostkidNovelistsPaleface and Of Virtue, the group quickly established a reputation for their energetic live show that turns their crowds into a giant party on a regular basis. Despite their relatively short time as a band since their formation, Avarlize have already performed at established festivals like SouthsideHurricane and RockXplosion.

"This song is for survivors," says Mike Schleibaum, guitar. "While we all have our own special survival story, this song touches on the bile that immerses us as we navigate this modern life. It's also an acknowledgment of the personal responsibility we all share to ourselves to reject all that attempts to consume us and fight each day to find our own space to exist in peace with a world at war. It's dedicated to everyone who's got that survivor's disease and won't ever give up."

Darkest Hour, as a whole, have weathered time, trends, and tides of change and stand stronger nearly three decades since their formation. Their unique sonic style incorporates death metal exorcisms, thrash recklessness, hardcore punk attitude, and melodic catharsis at the speed of a circle pit.

"The record's theme centers around the duality of survival while embracing rebirth,'" says Schleibaum"We keep killing parts of ourselves to make new parts and survive. The story of the record is the story of the band. We're still here, and we're giving the world a body of work that's representative of our music today. We've realized relationships, tours, good times, everything that seems to give life meaning, is terminal — and will inevitably end. Nevertheless, we're 46-year-old dudes who love this music enough to put up with the trials and tribulations of being artists in a touring band."

Darkest Hour clawed their way out of the DMV area in the USA in 1995. Throughout the ensuing years, they tallied tens of millions of streams and quietly built a diehard fan base. Canvasing the globe, they packed thousands of shows and touched down on every continent, save Antarctica. Along the way, they notably notched five top 3 debuts on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart. 2017's Godless Prophets & the Migrant Flora marked the group's third #1 bow on the latter in addition to crashing the top 10 of the Top Vinyl Albums Chart. It also represented a creative and critical high watermark. Beyond praise from RevolverEXCLAIM!, and more, MetalSucks rated it a rare perfect score of "5-out-of-5" and hailed it as "the best album Darkest Hour have ever made." New Noise cited it as "one of the best of 2017," and Metal Hammer dubbed it "a monumental return." PopMatters crowned it "a masterclass in following your beliefs no matter where they might take you."

Darkest Hour ended their 2023 touring across the USA with Exodus and Fit For An Autopsy. Their 2024 begins with a bang, with a headline tour across North America with Mouth of WarFilth Is EternalIAM, and Somnuri in support.
