Gürl bring back the 90s with chaotic, sugary anti-pop in their new single & video

Photo Credit: Sam East, with editing by Jack Watkins

Being described as "Billie Eilish meets Bring Me The Horizon", "bubblegum razorblades", and "if Taylor Swift wrote songs for Sleep Token", Gürl serve up pure, chaotic, sugary anti-pop with their latest single 'Boys in the 90s'.

Stream here: https://fanlink.to/Gurl_BoysInThe90s

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/f4JaapTXgFQ

'Boys In The 90s' is a tongue-in-cheek throwback to the pop-punk heydays of the MTV era, and the stunning video that accompanies it is a meta-ode to 90s icons. Breaking their film set's fourth wall, Gürl pay homage to Lara Croft, Kurt Cobain, Scream and many others, while giving a glam, nu-punk, unhinged performance. You can clearly tell from both the music and the accompanying video how much fun the band had recording it - and this spark inevitably jumps over.

The new single was produced by Rhys May (Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari) and is as pop as Gürl can be, but not without their added layers and ingredients.

Says vocalist and lyricist Josh Dalton:
It’s about growing up poor, on a council estate, going to a special measures school, and getting beaten up by kids that think you’re ugly… but then coming home and watching these 90s movies where men aren’t really portrayed as typically masculine or handsome, but instead androgynous and beautiful. Seeing that and thinking, why can’t I look like that?

"It’s about insecurity, and rage, and reverence to 90s icons. Even the drum beat we ripped straight off Backstreet Boys.

Watch Gürl live at the following:

Feb 08: Bristol The Exchange
Feb 09: Bournemouth Cellar Bar

gürl are anti-pop: Froot Loops and butcher knives, bubblegum and razor blades, and fashion posing as music, all wrapped in diva choruses with heavy guitars, rock drums and trap production. Think Ashnikko meets Loathe and Billie Eilish meets Bring Me The Horizon, but drenched in a magnificent shade of pink. The result is dangerous: it’s glam, it’s heavy, it’s camp, it’s sarcastic, it’s narcissistic, it’s ironic, and most importantly, it goes hard.

The Bristol-based outfit were founded by vocalist/lyricist Joshua Dalton and guitarist Jonny Turner, on the condition that they would be called Gürl, offering a cynical reflection on music marketing by choosing a name that ‘cool people’ would wear on a t-shirt. They started out with neo-soul but soon found that they could (and should) go much harder, combining outrageous lyrics, stadium-sized riffs, heavy-hitting drums, and irresistible basslines, all glued together by tasteful (but never meek) trap elements.

Vocalist/lyricist Joshua Dalton cares about words and means what he says. Following his father’s death, he found his road to Damascus by realising that each time he found himself in a dark place, he turned to music: "Every fight, every sleepless night, every break-up: music is this unrelenting, limitless, untameable source of joy."

Guitarist Jonny Turner thinks about little other than, well, playing the guitar. The co-founder, co-writer and co-producer alongside Joshua has honed his skills in countless bands and shows, learning to translate the electric shocks received he experienced playing rural Romanian bars directly into the energy he now projects on stage.

Joining the Gürl group in the summer of 2022, Jay Parker turns up both temperature and volume with four strings and attitude. Creative from the get-go, she received her first guitar as a backcombed, eyelinered, skinny-jean-wearing teenage scene kid – a gift from her parents, alongside early inspiration ranging from Missy Elliot to Green Day and Pink Floyd. Though Jay has since graduated in fashion communication and also shines as a model, stylist, photographer, baker, and connaisseur of salty snacks, her calling is and has always been music, with all the sweat, tears, and blistered fingers that come with it.

To complete the Gürl family, drummer Thomas John rings rings in 2024 with a bang (quite literally). After watching Travis Barker in Blink 182’s 'All The Small Things' music video at age two, he instantly fell in love with rock music and knew what his lifelong passion would be. In his own words, "Drumming has always been an escape from any issues that I faced in life and allowed me to focus all my energy on something constructive.” If you've seen Gürl live, you know he's serious when he talks about energy…

UK rockers Amongst Liars announce new album and release 'Alibi' single

Rising UK rockers Amongst Liars have have announced the release of their second album Design, out 4th July 2024. The band have also unveiled a lyric video for 'Alibi', the third single taken from the record.

Watch the 'Alibi' lyric video here: https://youtu.be/VbnErJan2e0
Pre-order Designhttps://www.amongstliars.com/shop

The band comment: "‘Alibi' is a reflective song about when trust breaks down in a relationship and things start to spiral downwards. It also echoes mental health and the way that people perceive each other in relationships."

'Alibi' follows previous singles 'The Shameful’, which was selected as Metal Hammer’s Track of the Week, and 'Ready For This?'

A tight powerhouse of a band; Amongst Liars are urgent, questioning, loud and fierce. Together they play heavy and direct modern rock’n’roll: massive riffs and powerful, melodic choruses, fuzzy guitar, pummelling drums and bass, pin-balling between heavy alternative rock, grunge and punk. They also have a lyricist who can’t help but use his band as a platform to air anxieties and raise questions about the world we live in.

Amongst Liars toured the UK in the autumn of 2023 supporting Theory of a Deadman, and next head out to support Ayron Jones on a French tour in February 2024. More UK tour dates to be announced soon.

Eastbourne/Brighton based Amongst Liars formed in early 2020 and play a unique blend of energetic, modern rock. Critically acclaimed debut album Amongst Liars was released in July 2022, receiving widespread support from BBC Introducing, Kerrang! and Planet Rock, with singles A-listed on Primordial Radio. Spotify streams are currently hitting the 500K mark, while their YouTube views amount to over 200K.

The band won the prestigious Great Music Stories ‘Band of the Year 2021’ and 'Album of the Year 2022', completed two headline tours and supported Theory Of A Deadman on a full UK tour, as well as another UK tour with Ayron Jones. They will be spending the rest of 2023 putting the finishing touches to their upcoming second album Design.

Uplifting duo FLOYA have released their new single 'Lights Out' - the first song they wrote and recorded as a band. The track is taken from their upcoming debut album Yume, due for release on 8th March via Arising Empire

Guitarist Marv Wilder comments:

“We were jamming somewhere in Norway when we stumbled upon the main riff of the song. Phil went straight into the recording booth and laid down some sketches, it was very natural. I feel like ‘Lights Out’ is an homage to our musical roots, we were very different people when we wrote that one. Lyrically it’s probably the darkest one we did, but the topic it tackles is so important. It’s an amazing feeling to now release it after all this time, it’s very humbling.”

'Lights Out' shines as a standout track on FLOYA's electrifying debut album Yume. The album features the band's recent singles, which have acted as compelling glance into their musical excellence. It's a collection of songs that promise to ignite your senses.

Hailing from Germany, Marv Wilder and Phil Bayer found common ground by talking about their childhood influences, namely Peter Gabriel, U2 & Sting

Since the release of their debut single 'Wonders' in March 2022, FLOYA have amassed over eight million streams on Spotify alone. Their single 'The Hymn' was featured in an official AFL game between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs on Australian television; an impressive achievement for a newly launched act. FLOYA have also received significant airplay from Kerrang! Radio (UK) and Radio Contact (BE).

Swedish rock trio The Gems stream fifth single 'Fruits Of My Labor' ahead of album release

Sweden’s most promising new rock band, The Gems, gear up for the release of their highly anticipated debut album Phoenix, out this Friday, 26th January 2024, by revealing fifth single 'Fruits Of My Labor'.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/t1mlw1d7YpE

Pre-order Phoenix here: https://lnk.to/THEGEMS-Phoenix/napalmrecords

The Gems on 'Fruits Of My Labor': “This song is about overcoming and appreciating the struggles on the way to making your dreams come true. ”

The trio consisting of three ex-Thundermother members, Guernica Mancini, Emlee Johansson and Mona “Demona” Lindgren, caught the attention of the music industry even before they had a name, and started playing live internationally when they only had one standalone single out, already receiving significant airplay chart success in Germany.

The members of The Gems hit #6 on the Official German Album Charts twice with their previous band, and performed at many huge international festivals such as Wacken, Sweden Rock and Alcatraz, and toured with iconic rock band Scorpions. With their debut album Phoenix, The Gems rise from the ashes, ready to take over the rock scene.

Captivating, chanting intro track 'Aurora' allows vocalist Guernica Mancini's distinctive, strong and bluesy vocals shine, and sets the scene before the catchy rock’n’roll anthem 'Queens' roars as a celebration of feminine power. Standing up for oneself, fighting back and rising above are some of the main lyrical themes of Phoenix, which 'Send Me To The Wolves' is an outstanding example of. The song’s storyline champions overcoming and not giving in to oppressors, before 'Domino' takes The Gems’ grooviness to the level of legendary classic rock bands of the 70s. With emotional tracks like 'Undiscovered Paths' and 'Fruits Of My Labor', The Gems bring significant depth and variety to the album, distancing themselves from their history. Stunning interlude 'Maria's Song', featuring violinist Maria Jern, fades into the touching ballad 'Ease Your Pain' - giving extra space to the exceptional guitar work of Mona 'Demona' Lindgren. Following track 'Running' shines as a surefire future hit with more impressive guitar work and Emlee Johansson’s hard hitting drums, before the beautifully stripped down acoustic version of 'Like A Phoenix' - backed with acoustic guitar by producer Johan Randén - wraps up The Gems’ debut album. Phoenix was mastered by Plec Johannsons (Soilwork, Hank von Hell, Firewind) and its artwork was created by ex-Thundermother member Giorgia Carteri (Soilwork, The Nightflight Orchestra).

It is clear that the seasoned musicians of The Gems won’t settle in the shadows of their prior successes. With their fresh, convincing debut offering, The Gems take a stand and leave the past behind. Make no mistake - with Phoenix, The Gems will conquer the international rock scene in a heartbeat.

Phoenix will be available in the following formats:

Prog-metallers Exist Immortal release new single/video 'Play Pretend'

UK prog-metal outfit Exist Immortal are back with their blistering new single 'Play Pretend'. The track embodies the band’s true essence and showcases their continuous evolution. 'Play Pretend' is the first in a series of six stand-alone singles due to drop across the year.

Meyrick de la Fuente (vocals) states: “The main idea going into writing this specific track was to create the juxtaposition between something really heavy and dark sounding to something really pretty sounding and catchy. There was definitely a lot more space to create freely and without boundaries in this new set of material and that definitely shines through in the songs. The lyrics are about overcoming internal and external constraints and the journey towards self-realization. They underscore the importance of pushing through life's challenges and the role of belief and imagination in transcending our everyday realities.

"The plan for 2024 is to drop a whole bunch of huge singles, all with really cool videos and keep everyone suitably plied with riffs all year long. Our time in Japan supporting the legendary Cynic last month was literally a dream come true. We had the greatest time playing some of the best shows we have ever had the opportunity to be a part of! It truly is an incredible country and we barely even scratched the surface. We really want to smash some new markets too, as our recent tours of Mexico and Japan this past year have definitely have us poised to go international in a big way.

"In these new songs I think it’s fair to say that we have finally really found our feet as a creative unit. We have been writing music that we love and have been motivated solely by how excited we get about the tracks, this is the music that naturally occurs for us and it just flows so easily. I don’t think we’ve ever had so much fun making songs together and we are so hyped to finally get to share them.”

Hailing from the Southeast of England, Exist Immortal combine metalcore and technical metal with pop influences and have spent the last few years touring across the world developing their sound, growing their fanbase and leaving a lasting impact on audiences that witness the powerful live show.

The band have played festivals such as Metaldays (SLOV), Euroblast (GER), Maximum Rock (ROM), Complexity Fest (NL) and have toured with high profile acts such as SikthTexturesLandmvrks and CynicEXIM have also headlined the main stage at UK Tech Fest (2022), and in 2023 completed sold out tours in Mexico and most recently Japan, ending what has been a whirlwind year of highlights, cementing the band as one of the hottest acts in the progressive metal/metalcore scene.

Following on from their self-titled album (November 2022 via Seek & Strike) which received universal acclaim from the music press and fans alike, and projecting the band to new levels, EXIM are excited to present their latest offering 'Play Pretend' to the world, beginning a new era for the band.

Belgian post-metal quartet Divided announce debut album and stream new single

Belgian post-metal, hardcore, post-shoegaze quartet Divided are delighted to announce their stunning debut Light Will Shine, to be released 29th March via feted post-everything label Dunk!records.

Elements of Chat PileSlint, and countrymen Stake is but a glimpse into this expansive, wide-ranging album. Honest and brutal, referential and experimental, experiential and immediate, Light Will Shine is a excellent new addition to the modern heavy canon.

Listen for example to lead single and opener ‘Cinder’, a rollicking, grooving, Converge-esque behemoth, which even tends into abrasive post-punk at times.

'Cinder' is streaming everywhere now, accessible via this link: https://linktr.ee/DividedCinder

Pre-orders for Light Will Shine available soon.

The band comment: "When recording ‘Cinder’, Gilles [Demolder, Wiegedood, Oathbreaker] (who produced the album) suggested to go crazy with the vocal performance. So we did, and it flipped the whole track upside down. In fact, we did something similar for every track. Really glad that we’ve been pushed to our limits by each other and Gilles while making this record. It was such a connecting, enriching, but most of all fun experience. Couldn’t be happier with the result and we’re all very excited for you to hear this."

From 'Cinder' through to the tortuously sparse closer, ‘Sleepers’, Divided demonstrate a highly impressive range of emotion, and breadth of musical maturity.

In a sense, Light Will Shine is a circular album, detailing vocalist/drummer Pepijn’s battles with anxiety. ‘Cinder’ details his burnout, and running away from responsibility, whereas ‘Sleepers’ is his attempt at finding peace, embracing his fears and anxieties, accepting them as part of his life.

Although still a new outfit, Divided are making names for themselves on the Belgian circuit. Previous support slots with StakeBrutusWiegedood and Psychonaut have well spotlighted the band, alongside signing with Dunk!records, and an appearance at the showcase festival, Left Of The Dial. The band will shortly be supporting heavyweights LLNN before performing at May 2024’s Dunk!festival alongside Jo QuailWang Wensleepmakeswaves, and many more post-rock luminaries.

Feb 04: FR, Paris Glazart
Feb 05: CH, Lucerne Sedel
Feb 06: AT, Vienna Chelsea
Feb 07: PL, Krakow Kamienna12
Feb 08: PL, Warsaw Hydrozagadka
Feb 09: PL, Wroclaw Lacznik
Feb 10: CZ, Prague Kasarna Karlin
Feb 11: DE, Berlin Urban Spree

The band comment: "It is an unprecedented honour to be able to release a little split single with the good folks in LLNN. I saw them for the first time at ArcTanGent 2023, headlining the same stage we headlined the night before and was completely blown away by just how terrifying the whole set was. It was oppressive, it was demonic, it was enormous.

"Coming up with a track that could keep up with their intensity was a challenge. A real head scratcher. We came to the realisation that it was have to be pure dissonance. Just semi-tones and pain....and so 'Sleep Paralysis Demon' was born. A song about living with the contradiction & confusion of the internet age, and the timely death of one Henry Kissinger."

Sugar Horse's new music follows the release of the Bristolians' mighty new EP Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico (3rd November, Fat Dracula Records/distributed by Metal Blade Records in US).

Order and stream Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico here: https://li.sten.to/Consequences

An epic achievement, Truth... is, in signature Sugar Horse style, one single long song: a meditation and exploration of everything the note A has to offer.

Telling the story of Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, the band state: "It’s frequently been difficult for us, as a band, to limit ourselves to “normal” pop song lengths and structures….as evidenced in pretty much all of our releases to date. From time to time we feel the need to loose the ropes that bind us and let our Long & Tedious flag fly freely. Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico is the result of said untethering.

"We’ve always found the idea of exploring a single note over long stretches of time interesting and this song is that idea taken to an extreme logical conclusion. It’s an exploration of the note A in all its possible variations."

Sugar Horse have recently toured with post-rock luminaries 65daysofstatic across Europe, as well as dates with Pianos Become The Teeth, Liturgy, Chat Pile and an appearance at ArcTanGent festival.

A lot of people take the name Sugar Horse to be a drug reference - perhaps fitting for a band that sound like the last moments of a three-day binge. Darting wildly between dark/light, pain/bliss, sacred/profane, Sugar Horse are unpredictable and unrestrained.

Formed in what is now considered to be the utopian dreamscape of 2015, the band grew slowly at first. Far from fully formed, but steadily gaining limbs, heads and vital organs. Finally, 2019’s DRUJ followed swiftly by 2020’s DRUGS saw them hit on a relentless stride of eclectic releases that simultaneously confused and entranced audiences.

2021 saw the band encamp in a former Lutheran church to record their debut album, The Live Long After, releasing it via Brighton’s own Small Pond Records. Publications such as The Quietus describing the record as “shift[ing] dispositions fluidly, taking elements of extreme aggression alongside floaty Post-Metal” and Echoes & Dust calling it “a monumental achievement”. The album took every disparate element that Sugar Horse previously employed and amplified them, while juxtaposing each next to each other, with genuinely unpredictable and exciting consequences.

2022 saw no relent from the band’s fast paced release schedule, as they put out an anthemic shoegaze single in 'Pictures Of Dogs Having Sex', followed swiftly by their collaborative Waterloo Teeth EP. A release that paired Sugar Horse’s terrifying eclecticism with guest appearances from twelve other artists in just four short(ish) songs. Each artist coming from a different area of the modern British music scene, whether that be world conquering post-punk bass lines from IDLES’ Adam Devonshire, heavy titans Conjurer and Pupil Slicer’s throat crippling wails, or a shredding guitar solo from Biffy Clyro/Oceansize axe wielder Mike Vennart. The EP packs in an album’s worth of genre mutilating twists and turns into just 25 minutes of music.

During the band’s live performances, the anthemic sing-along sparks a special connection which is palpable in the accompanying live video that transports viewers into the heart of a Von Hertzen Brothers live show experience.

Vocalist / guitarist Mikko von Hertzen comments: "Songs like 'Sunday Child' have become the heartbeat of our live shows. The reactions and excitement of the audience when we play this track is great fun to witness from the stage and, thus, we always really enjoy playing this song. We're thrilled to bring it to the forefront as a single and share a fresh live video that encapsulates the essence of the song and its magic."

Live at Tavastia will be released as a limited edition (1000) gatefold double vinyl LP, limited edition (1000) gatefold double CD, and on all streaming platforms.
