TheCityIsOurs release new single 'In The Dark'

TheCityIsOurs have released their new single 'In The Dark' via Arising Empire. Continuing their exploration of deep and evocative themes, the track follows previous single 'Shame', and delves further into the complexities of personal and societal challenges.

This new track builds upon the emotional narrative established in 'Shame', offering a compelling blend of powerful melodies and introspective lyrics, highlighting the ongoing journey towards self-discovery and acceptance.

With 'In the Dark', TheCityIsOurs reaffirm their commitment to shedding light on the struggles many face in silence, providing a source of comfort and solidarity through their music.

Vocalist Oli Duncanson comments that 'In The Dark' is: "About building up a wall to keep yourself safe by creating a fake image of yourself to make your family happy, growing up being told by society that I'd always be a disappointment because of my sexuality, something I can't control. So I'd try to hide it and do anything to not cause any sort of disappointment in anything that I can control.

"The pressure of upholding that image builds up to a point where it feels you can't go back and completely shatter your own family's perception of you. No matter how much I'd planned it out and got to a point where I was going to tell them, nothing would ever come out, I feel guilty because your life is a lie to people who are supposed to love you unconditionally. And no matter how irrational I knew the fear of telling them was and how frustrated with myself I'd get for not being able to tell them, I could never get the words out.

"Your friends and potentially people who barely know you still know you more than family, which isn't fair. It feels like you can't progress as a person as you condition yourself to keep your walls built up, unable to let anyone in."

TheCityIsOurs are a four-piece pop metal band from London who have quickly garnered attention and growing support for peers, industry and fans alike, with their high-octane live show and the success of their second album. Coma (2021) smashed into the Top 5 iTunes Metal Charts with several singles appearing in editorial playlists with the likes of Amazon MusicDeezer and Spotify (including two covers on New Core and Metal UK) supporting the band.

TheCityIsOurs have become a upcoming staple on UK and EU festival line-ups, with appearances at Camden RocksMacmillan FestBurn It DownHolloween, a fly in appearance at High 5 Festival in Sweden, and a headline set in the Doghouse Tent at the revered Download Festival to a 4000+ audience of festival-goers. After a sold-out album release show at The Underworld in London, 2022 saw TheCityIsOurs break out into the European scene, with a full-length tour across the mainland. Most recently, the band toured across the UK supporting Heart Of A Coward

"Our second headliners are pioneers of the modern prog scene, TesseracT.  This announcement is a little closer to home for me personally, as I met the band in 2010 when they first started playing at my own venue, The Lounge Bar in Alton. They instantly stood out as exceptional artists and through that friendship, I’ve stood at the sides watching the stage sizes and fans increase steadily since, looking forward to the day returning when we can collaborate on a show again. Together, we’ve been working on an immersive experience for RADAR, this will be something special and not to be missed!

"The rest of our line-up additions showcase the health of this modern progressive scene, and our commitment to platforming new bands such as Vower (built from Toska, Black Peaks and Palm Reader!), and introducing a wide variety of music, from pop synths in the form of Kyros right through to post-hardcore from The Fall of Troy."

RADAR - the UK's most exciting new progressive music festival - moved to Manchester for its 2023 edition, the third iteration of the festival.

RADAR Festival 2023 was a smash success, with Friday headliners Sleep Token joining Periphery (Sunday) and Igorrr (Saturday) among a host of the best from the UK progressive underground and globally. RADAR pride themselves on providing a first home for the best international artists - previous years have seen Dirty Loops' (2022) and The Callous Daoboys' (2023) first UK shows.

RADAR capped their intensely impressive 2022 by winning the Best New Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards on 6th December in Manchester, and were shortlisted for Best Small Festival and Best Metropolitan Festival at 2023's UK Festival Awards.

With their mixture of international talent and confirmed homegrown success, RADAR Festival has already positioned themselves as a champion of forward-thinking guitar-led progressive music. No genre boundaries, welcome to all, RADAR Festival was launched in 2019 to acclaim, with performances from Animals As Leaders, Agent FrescoRolo Tomassi, among others. Following the COVID hiatus, RADAR Festival 2022 expanded to three days with triumphant appearances from Leprous, Haken, Dirty Loops, Plini, Conjurer, Soen and more.

RADAR Festival is all about pushing boundaries - this year introducing fresh genres to the lineup and stages - and this is just the beginning.

Shrapnel announce new album and release single/video

UK heavyweights Shrapnel have announced their forthcoming album In Gravity will be released via Candlelight Records on 31st May. To celebrate, the band have released a new single and video, 'Amber Screams'. It's a powerful track which looks at the harrowing issue of being stuck in a cycle of substance abuse.

Watch the video for ‘Amber Screams’ here: https://youtu.be/bd68qoOx9kQ

Pre-order In Gravity here:  https://shrapnel.lnk.to/InGravityAlbum

The band comment on the new single: "'Amber Screams' delves into the harmful cycle of substance abuse and the search of greater highs becoming the escape from the plummeting normalcy of addiction.

"This is simply the most bludgeoning and heavy we've ever sounded. It's a pretty sombre and introspective song, drawing on our love of bands like
Alice In Chains, Deftones, and Gojira, and turning this into something new. We really wanted to lean into our post-metal side, and ended up writing what is possibly our favourite song on the new album. We really wanted to translate a feeling of despondency and a sense of teetering on the edge of the abyss."

New album In Gravity is the sound of rebirth and marks the launch of a new chapter for Shrapnel. Drawing on their ever-deepening well of experience and influence, In Gravity sees a band at the height of their songwriting prowess. Whether dealing in extremity and complexity, Gojira-inspired bludgeoning heaviness, or a newly emerging sense of modern melodic maturity, Shrapnel are able to weave their sonic palette in new, genre-defying directions.

Guitarist Chris Martin comments: "We've channelled every bit of suffering, devastation, and emotion that we've experienced in recent years. We've never been so confident about our own material."

Helmed by Swedish super producer Jens Bogren (Sepultura, Opeth, Amon Amarth, Ihsahn) and featuring collaborations with Scott Kennedy (Bleed From Within) and modern shred virtuoso Bradley Hall, In Gravity sees Shrapnel breaking out of their shackles where others have failed, and staking their claim to the British metal throne.

Continuing, Chris adds, "As an album, In Gravity really has a focus on how we all deal with problems of varying extremities. We wanted to take a look at how some of the solutions to our problems become problems in of themselves, be that addiction or anything else.

"It's an album about how difficult it can be to face those problems many of us share. It was written during tragedy, and we're rolling it out during some difficult times for us. While we don't have the answers, we also realise that the ways we deal with issues is to create art, which in itself is a healer. We've really been holding the mirror up and exercising some demons on this one. It's led to the best album we've ever written, and something we hope will connect other people far more deeply than anything we've released previously."

Formed in 2009, Shrapnel have been on a campaign of destruction ever since. Previously supporting bands such as Exodus, Sepultura, Death Angel, Suicidal Tendencies, Wolf, Gama Bomb and appearing three times at Bloodstock Festival. Later this year the band are set to perform at Barbeuk Metal Festival in France. From the blistering underground EP No Saviours through to their critically acclaimed 2020 release, Palace For The Insane, the band have grown from strength to strength with no intention of slowing down. Brutal metallic sludge outfit Mastiff release new single 'Void'

Mastiff have released 'Void', the second crushing single to be taken from forthcoming album Deprecipice, an intense hybrid of hardcore, punk & metal, the soundtrack to Neurosis, Converge & Cursed battling in a Roman Coliseum.

Deprecipice, will be released on 22nd March via MNRK Heavy and features an onslaught of special guests including Ethan Lee McCarthy from Primitive Man, Harry Nott from Burner, Dan James from XIII and Rob Scott from Yersin.

Watch the visualiser for 'Void' here: https://youtu.be/joRaHs6-Vi0

Pre-order Deprecipice here: https://mastiff.ffm.to/deprecipice

Comments guitarist James Lee: “'Void' might not fall in the literal middle of Deprecipice, but in many ways it acts as a thematic centrepiece, both musically and lyrically. There’s a strong Converge influence in the guitars for sure, and we wanted it to have a ragged, almost punk sound that gradually evolves into this monstrous, lurching breakdown. Dan and Joe (Clayton, producer) then worked on washing the song over with some nasty, unsettling electronic noise that gives it this really queasy vibe.

"For a good while we had the music finished but hadn’t landed on a lyric, but then in the few weeks between the initial album tracking and Jim’s vocal session my mother passed away after a short but brutal battle with lung cancer, and this song ended up becoming the outlet for all of the pain and grief I had spilling out of me. To suddenly not have that safety net of the person who created you, for them to just be gone with nothing to take their place, it really did feel like a void opened in my chest, and this song was my humble attempt to put that feeling into words.”

Everything Mastiff does is in the name of intensity. Since forming amid the misery of Kingston-upon-Hull in 2013, the five-piece have crashed extreme metal, sludge and hardcore together to create the most brutal sonic onslaughts possible, all in the name of keeping their music fresh, raw and seething.

Signing to MNRK Heavy three years ago, Mastiff’s commitment to blunt-force aggression remains untempered. Their 2021 album, Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth, was described by Blabbermouth’s Dom Lawson as a “horrifying slab of disgust” and “a sustained scream in the face of uncontrollable madness”. Now comes its long-anticipated follow-up: Deprecipice – an album that, somehow, smacks even harder than anything this band have unchained before, produced by longtime collaborator Joe Clayton (Wallowing, Ithaca, Tuskar) at Manchester’s No Studio. The beguiling artwork that runs throughout the album is by Paul Phillips at the award winning True Spilt Milk Designs, another long time collaborator with the band.

“We’ve gone quite a lot towards a hardcore sound,” says Hodge. “Where the last one was more death metal, this one’s a lot more staccato: a lot more defined, riff-wise.”

Unlike so many of their extreme metal peers right now, though, Mastiff didn’t source this rejuvenated savagery from the anxieties and frustrations of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the lockdowns ended and real life started to resume in 2021 and 2022, Hodge and Lee noticed the spirits of the world around them lifting. Feelings of trauma and isolation were beginning to enter people’s rear-view mirrors – and it was an overcoming that the duo couldn’t relate to. Lee was mourning the loss of his mother, while Hodge realised he was still grieving over the death of his five-day-old son, Isaac, in 2010.

“The album’s called Deprecipice, and that pretty much sums up where me and James were when we wrote it,” says the singer. “We were both standing back on the edge of a depressive void. You have to keep that primal feeling,” Hodge continues. “I think, if you take too much time, you start to second-guess yourself. We try to be as true to ourselves as we can.”

With DeprecipiceMastiff have made a magnum opus that bleeds with genuine pain. As earnest as it is ferocious, it’s already an album of the year candidate for a year that’s only just beginning.

Aussie pop-punks Between You & Me announce SH!T YEAH EP and stream new single 'In The Middle'

Aussie pop-punk quintet Between You & Me have announced their long-awaited new EP SH!T YEAH, to be released 5th April. Alongside today’s announcement, the band have released a brand new single, 'In The Middle', the third track lifted from the upcoming release following on from last year’s 'Nevermind' and 'YEAH!'.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/xFTK54bt3M8

“‘In The Middle’ is about the realisation that your relationship is over,” reflects vocalist JT. “The strong joy and excitement you once brought to each other’s lives had been replaced with fighting, bitterness and a complete breakdown in communication. Even despite this, you both yearn for it to work out and dream of the better times. You break up, you get back together, and the cycle continues, despite both recognising you had grown apart as people and the trust for each other was irreparable. The song encapsulates the slow breakdown of a relationship and the acceptance in moving on.”

The new single and forthcoming EP saw the band team up once again with Canadian producer Sam Guaiana, who flew to Australia earlier this year to record with the band at Beveridge Road Recording Studios in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. Between You & Me previously worked with Guaiana on their acclaimed 2021 album Armageddon (Hopeless Records).

Between You & Me are currently on their UK headline tour. Remaining dates (with support from Broadside and Young Culture):

Feb 22: Southampton Joiners
Feb 23: London Underworld [SOLD OUT]
Feb 24: Birmingham Asylum

Following this run of dates, Between You & Me will head over to the USA for their first ever headline North American tour.

SH!T YEAH is the band’s first independent body of work, and is the culmination of an incredible couple of years for Between You & Me. Their first independent single 'Nevermind' was released to acclaim from fans and tastemakers alike, and arrived ahead of a massive stint in the USA supporting Knuckle Puck and Real Friends, followed by two Australian tours upon their return, where they supported Slowly Slowly and You Me At Six.

In 2021, Between You & Me’s acclaimed record Armageddon (Hopeless Records) took the band to new heights, featuring hit singles 'Deadbeat', 'Butterflies', 'Change' and 'Go To Hell' ft. Mikaila Delgado of Yours Truly. The electrifying 10-track record has since clocked up over 15 million global streams in addition to support from BBC Radio 1 (UK), Spotify, and more. Their headline Australian album tour finished with a milestone sold-out hometown show at Melbourne’s The Corner Hotel and was swiftly followed by a month-long support of State Champs in the USA.

New York noise rockers Couch Slut announce forthcoming album with new single

New York City's resident misfits Couch Slut have played a veritable strain of drug-fuelled, incendiary, hardcore noise rock since 2013. Led by Megan Osztrosits' infernal roar and subversive, vitriolic lyrics, the quintet return with their fourth full-length opus You Could Do It Tonight, due 19th April via Brutal Panda Records.

The record feels like both a summation and an expansion of the Couch Slut experience to date. On one hand, it features some of the band’s most straightforward noise-rock crushers: a prime example is lead single 'Ode to Jimbo', which pairs a stomping central riff with lyrics about sloppy-drunk excess, set in Osztrosits’ favourite Brooklyn watering hole, Jimbo Slim’s. “‘Ode to Jimbo’ is the first, like, love song that we’ve ever done, and I did that for my friend's bar that I go to every day,” she explains.

Watch the video for 'Ode to Jimbo', shot on location at Jimbo Slim's, here: https://youtu.be/LNtAqRoiMgg
Pre-order You Could Do It Tonight and stream the single here: https://orcd.co/couchslut

Recorded amidst the filth of NYC with Uniform's Ben Greenberg (Drab Majesty, Portrayal of Guilt, Metz), and mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios in London (Blur, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke), Couch Slut subvert the paradigm and up the ante in every imaginable way across nine vignettes of perverse, true-to-life storytelling layered over the band's singular, dragged-through-the-mud songcraft. This is a depraved style of noise rock that will scare the living sh*t out of you. Guest appearances from members of fellow NYC compatriots Imperial Triumphant and Pyrrhon scatter across the album, adding layers of cacophony.

With ten full years of pain and suffering under their proverbial belt, along with three prior full-length albums My Life As A Woman (2014), Contempt (2017), and Take A Chance On Rock ‘n’ Roll (2020), Couch Slut sound more urgent, threatening, nasty and despondent than ever, and You Could Do It Tonight is the perfect soundtrack for 2024.

Couch Slut will make their European debut at Roadburn Fest on 19th April performing You Could Do It Tonight in full. Additionally, the band have announced a special headlining set at Caterwaul Fest’s Afterparty in Minneapolis in May, and a hometown performance on 1st March, venue TBD.

Couch Slut are:
Dylan DiLella – guitar
Kevin Hall – bass, shehnai, granular synthesizer
Amy Mills – guitar, flute, trumpet
Theo Nobel – drums and percussion, synthesizer, bells
Megan Osztrosits – vocals

RADAR to become first festival to donate ticket sale proceeds to Music Venue Trust

The award-winning, genre-busting RADAR Festival will become the first festival to donate ticket sales proceeds to Music Venue Trust (MVT), to support grassroots music venues.

A percentage of every ticket sold for RADAR Festival 2024 will support MVT's Pipeline Investment Fund and is a major step forward in supporting the backbone of the UK live scene.

MVT's Pipeline Investment Fund has awarded more than £260,000 to 61 UK grassroots music venues since it was founded in 2022. The announcement follows renewed calls from MVT for a ticket levy on all major stadium and arena gigs to support the grassroots, in the wake of the news that 16% (125) of UK grassroots music venues were lost in the last 12 months, with 38% of all UK grassroots music venues posting a financial loss.

Already a landmark event in the North West, the independent, progressive RADAR Festival this year runs from 26-28th July at Manchester's O2 Victoria Warehouse, with synth royalty The Midnight headlining the Friday - their debut UK festival performance. Joining them are Dirty Loops, Plini, VOLA and Sungazer, among others.

Get tickets from: RADARfestival.co.uk

Co-organiser Catherine Jackson-Smith, who also owns The Lounge Bar in Alton, said, "I’ve seen the journey in my own venue of young artists playing for the first time and stepping onto a small stage that they know has previously hosted artists that they admire and want to emulate. Time and again I’ve watched these nervous artists blossom in confidence, ability and stature within the scene, waiting to be discovered by the masses. When that happens, they know how to interact with a crowd, how to control a room, pace their set and perform to the best of their abilities.

"These are all crafts that you can only develop with a small, raw audience that the grassroots music scene cultivates every night up and down the country. If we don’t protect the smaller venues then there isn’t a pipeline for the next headliners, and this ticking time bomb is something that the music industry can, and must, take action on."

Joe James, RADAR co-organiser and former events manager at The Boileroom in Guildford added, “Many of the crew working at RADAR - lighting and sound engineers, stage and production managers, merchandise sellers and more - gained first-hand experience at grassroots venues. As well as nurturing artists these training grounds support the whole talent ecosystem.”

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to RADAR Festival, for taking this bold step as the first festival to champion the Pipeline Investment Fund. Their support is a strong commitment to the heart and soul of the UK's music scene, nurturing its roots through the vital network of Grassroots Music Venues,” said MVT CEO and founder Mark Davyd.

High on Fire announce new album and release new single/video 'Burning Down'

Iconic U.S. rock band High on Fire will release their new full-length Cometh the Storm on 19th April via MNRK Heavy. The lead track, 'Burning Down', which comes in the form of a haunting, fever dream video, is now available.

“'Burning Down' kicks off with a classic Pike riff,” says Jeff Matz. “I think this song harkens back to the early High on Fire sound, but infused with fresh, new elements. It has a killer groove that you can really sink into. The body of the song took shape in our PNW rehearsal space, and we came up with the bridge/solo section and finalized the arrangement while we were at GodCity. Kurt Ballou’s input as a producer was also hugely helpful. His keen ears and fresh perspective were invaluable in making this album.

The GRAMMY Award-winning group, celebrating their 25th anniversary, recorded Cometh the Storm at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts with producer Kurt Ballou. The 11-song effort - the band's ninth studio album - marks the release of the first new High on Fire music since 2018's Electric Messiah and the first to feature drummer Coady Willis (Big Business, Murder City Devils), alongside bassist Jeff Matz, and guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike.

It has been more than five years since the band’s revered Electric Messiah earned High on Fire ‘Best Metal Performance’ at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards, placing the unit among the ranks of groups such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead, and Metallica as winners of the prestigious award. “Being nominated for a Grammy was pretty mind blowing, but winning one was truly surreal,” says bassist Jeff Matz. “A Grammy win was certainly not something we were aiming for, but it’s quite an honor to be recognized in that way, and we are grateful. In terms of how it’s affected us, it has definitely opened some new doors—we’ve gained some new fans and wider recognition, but it hasn’t changed how we approach our craft. We’ve always tried to create uncompromising music that feels good to us, and is in line with what we would want to listen to.

In the half decade since the band’s Grammy nod, the world has seismically shifted and is a different place. The same can be said for High on Fire. The band’s musical archetype has been modded, morphed, and evolved; its blast radius widened. Bassist Jeff Matz joined Mutoid Man and traveled abroad to study and learn the techniques of Middle Eastern folk music and the plucked string instrument, the bağlama (or saz), Matt Pike formed a solo band, released an LP, and toured the U.S., and world-renowned percussionist, Coady Willis, he of Melvins, Big Business, and Murder City Devils united with Pike and Matz to breathe new life into the group a quarter century into their captivating career.

The lead track on High on Fire’s new album, Cometh the Storm, is the invigorating 'Burning Down', a vigorous barrage which exemplifies the prowess the unification of the three professional musicians owns.

Universally recognized as one of the most potent acts in music today, High on Fire creates dynamic metal that merges primal fury and aggression, hesher bombast and hall of fame heaviness. Described as "a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume," High on Fire has rewritten the hard rock rule book since their formation in 1998, forging a style and sound that is both critically celebrated and unique. The group features vocalist and cult guitar hero Matt Pike (also a founding member of the famed underground band SLEEP) singular bassist Jeff Matz, and powerhouse drummer Coady Willis
