South African death metal six-piece Vulvodynia have released new single / video 'Banquet of Enigmatic Horrors II: Agony' ahead of their new album Praenuntius Infiniti, which is out 17th September via Unique Leader Records.

The band commented: "We are super excited to release this single, it's the second half of a two-part epic. 'The Banquet of Enigmatic Horrors, Part 2: Agony' is for sure a band favourite! Not only for how pummelling it is but also because of the guests we have on it. Malcolm Pugh of Inferi shows up on our track-list again with his tasteful display of Orchestration and alien theremin use. But what really sends this single over the edge is machine gun vocal extraordinaire Oliver Rae Aleron of Archspire. He completely blew us away with his absolutely insane yet precise speed vocals. We hope old fans and new fans alike can appreciate this behemoth!"

An unending sea of carnage, a God-turned-beast devouring everything within its path, an epic, sprawling tale of the consumption of galaxies and their inhabitants - and the duality of battling deities that takes place to bring the reign of Praenuntius to an end. What does this all mean? Simply put, it means Vulvodynia - South Africa’s premium death metal export - are back with Praenuntius Infiniti, their fourth full-length release and a label signing to boot. Completing the tale established in their critically acclaimed 2015 EP Finis Omnium Ignorantiam, Praenuntius Infiniti is one hour of flesh-melting, bone-busting death metal, infused with slamming elements and spine-shrinking breakdowns that capture the very crux of heavy, intense music. Produced by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy), the band’s Unique Leader Records debut displays Vulvodynia’s continued maturation and incorporation of melodic, technical and hyper aggressive elements into their backbone of brutal slamming death metal, to achieve what stands as their most diverse, engaging and immolating offer to date.

On the concept, the band conclude: "Praenuntius Infiniti tells the story of an inter-dimensional godlike being and his quest for ultimate power. After being cast out into the abyss by the elder Gods, Praenuntius begins devouring all of the known Multiverse on his journey to divine omnipotence. At the end of our 2015 release Finis Omnium Ignorantiam the earth gets eaten and travels through centuries of darkness down his gullet into the eternal wasteland of galaxies. The heavens are slowly torn asunder as the Gods scramble for a plan to defeat him. Battles rage and drama unfolds as the earth and other planets within his belly try to fight off the ruthless invasion of his spawn. Shall the Gods prevail or shall Praenuntius devour all!?"

Afterglow due for release 10th December 2021 via Long Branch Records

German metalcore quintet Rising Insane have released 'Serenade', the third single from their upcoming album Afterglow, due for release on 10th December 2021 via Long Branch Records. The band have also shared a music video that follows their recent singles 'Afterglow' and 'Meant To Live'.

Check out the video for 'Serenade' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LGh9MM_aD4

The band comment:

"You could almost think 'Serenade' is about a love affair - in principle, it is a relationship too - only it's the one with depression and anxiety disorders. No matter how hard you fight it or how well you get by during the day, when you go to sleep and your mind starts spinning, you end up losing yourself again."

Pre-order Afterglow and stream 'Serenade' here: https://smarturl.it/ri_afterglow

Rising Insane quickly gained attention in the German metal scene after self-releasing their debut album Nation in 2017, supporting the likes of Stray From The Path and For Today, as well as touring alongside Annisokay in 2018. Their rise continued in 2019, where they performed at Impericon Festival and signed to Long Branch Records. Later that year, the five-piece released their album Porcelain, with rave reviews across the globe which accelerated the band into international focus. They followed with a well-received cover of The Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights', which spread their name even further. Rising Insane's debut headline run in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however they used the time to record their Recovered EP, which featured additional cover songs.

Now, Rising Insane are back with new music and ready to elevate to a higher plane. Whilst staying true to their post-hardcore and metalcore roots, they have grown both as a band and individual musicians, evident on their new single which offers a more mature sound.

Aaron Steineker - Vocals

Robert Kühling - Drums

Bound In Fear stream single featuring Kevin Muller of Alluvial and The Merciless Concept

'Scar of Man' lyric video streaming now

Penance album is available 15th October via Unique Leader Records

UK deathcore quintet Bound In Fear have released new single 'Scar of Man', taken from their upcoming sophomore album, Penance, out 15th October via Unique Leader Records.

Featuring guest vocals from Kevin Muller of Alluvial and The Merciless Concept, watch the lyric video to 'Scar of Man' here: https://youtu.be/cAkWjDBo9vg

'Scar of Man' represents a different side of the album from lead single and title track ‘Penance’. While the lyrical approach is as visceral and aggressive as ever, it sits on a bed of a more complex arrangement than has been explored on previous releases.

The track’s brutality is complimented by an appearance from vocalist Kevin Muller, whose powerful guest spot highlights the theme of the lyrics - a calculated, yet still maniacal, eradication of the enemy.

Guitarists Steve Hunt and Ben Sutherland comment: “'Scar of Man' is an experimental track for Bound In Fear, but highlights a new side to the band’s music that will be demonstrated on Penance - technical guitar parts fit comfortably with the downtempo and beatdown patterns that our fans will recognise.

"We look forward to hearing and seeing people’s reactions to the new aspects of our sound - not only on the record, but when we bring the new songs to stages across Europe and the UK in 2021 and 2022”.

Since their formation in 2016, UK quintet Bound In Fear have been creating uncompromisingly heavy music and in a short time have crafted a niche for themselves amongst the ungodly heavy. Their first release Regicide was received incredibly well by the underground scene, selling out of all pressings. The band spent the release cycle playing shows around the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. The accrued reputation the band gained resulted in a record deal with Unique Leader Records.

The next step in Bound In Fear’s catalogue of monstrously heavy music was the 2019 debut full-length The Hand Of Violence. The lyrical content took a very dark and personal route, while the compositions became more structured, intricate, and menacing. The release propelled Bound In Fear into a new echelon of the extreme music scene, seeing their streaming stats increase heavily and CD, vinyl and merch sales beating all expectations.

In early 2021, Bound In Fear followed up with the Eternal EP, a collection of five songs crafted with detailed soundscapes, a result of increased collaboration within a refreshed line-up, and a hunger for ever more extreme compositions, sounds, and tones. Eternal stands as a testament to the new direction of Bound In Fear, without leaving behind their previous works.

With second album Penance looming, Bound In Fear are ready to show the extreme metal world that they are here to stay, and here to slay.

Sugar Horse release in-studio video of new single 'Shouting Judas At Bob Dylan'
unnamed - 2021-08-17T140209.970.jpg

Self-described 'decidedly average' Bristol rockers Sugar Horse have released a new in-studio performance video of current single 'Shouting Judas At Bob Dylan', taken from their long-awaited debut LP, The Live Long After, to be released 27th August via Small Pond Records.

Watch here: https://youtu.be/RJsdClVpp8o

Pre-order The Live Long After here: https://link.smallpondrec.co.uk/sugar-horse

Lyrically based around the fear of the unknown, The Live Long After is a caustic, visceral, and highly engaging listen. From the uneasy opening notes of the introduction 'I Am Not Now' (an anti-hymn based on an ancient Byzantine chant), to 'Live Long' (a doom track about the endless void) and 'Death Cult', (which discusses Aleph, the Japanese doomsday movement), the record is an indication of a band bursting with things to say.

It's not for nothing that Sugar Horse have become known as a nonconformist band. Their previous EPs Druj and Drugs were acclaimed amalgams of doom, hardcore, stoner and punk, and The Live Long After continues this curious trend.

Indications of My Bloody Valentine, Cult of Luna, Deafheaven and Oceansize can be heard throughout the record, but still only touch upon the wide variety of sounds and influences Sugar Horse explore. A band who were due to tour with Black Peaks before the inevitable Covid disruption, and who have toured with Vennart and played ArcTanGent, Sugar Horse have received early praise from Upset Magazine, Metal Hammer, and Kerrang!.

Forming in 2015 as a trio in a flat in Bristol, Sugar Horse fully came into being in 2019 with the addition of Jake Healy on baritone guitar and keyboards. Seeking to break away from emerging trends in their scene, the band's emphasis on simplicity and down-tempo heft belies an impressive sense of self-awareness and maturity. In their own words: "I think the best art is formed when it's creators enforce rigid rules on themselves. Mondrian had geometry, Mark E Smith had his hatred for cigarette taxation and we have a complete disregard for urgency."

Despite what they say about themselves, Sugar Horse are anything but "average."

Sugar Horse are:

Ashley Tubb (Vocals/Guitar)
Jake Healy (Baritone Guitar, Keyboards)
Chris Howarth (Bass)
Martin Savage (Drums)

Canadian progressive metal quartet Fayne release stunning video for new single 'Empath'

Canadian progressive metal quartet Fayne have streamed the stunning video for their new single 'Empath', out now.

Apple: https://apple.co/3xr34co

'Empath' is the first of a two-part cycle; stay tuned for the band's second single, more news of which will be revealed soon.

On the new single, Fayne state: "'Empath' is about how viewing music (or art in general) as a language, rather than just a form of expression, can allow us to connect and understand people on a deeper level than just conversation, even between two vastly different people. Putting your awareness and emotion into a piece of art or work is acknowledged by other individuals who have also done the same, even if it was in their own way. I guess in short, the song talks about the unique bond and understanding artists have with each other through art and expression itself. How deep that bond goes is up to the people in question, but the idea is that this can be achieved and in a world of art and music it very much exists."

"Adding a cello part to the video version of the song was all for the sake of communicating the message and theme behind the lyrics. Since the song speaks of artists communicating profoundly to each other through their art, we thought “Hey, let’s make this theme very real, and actually record a cello section for this part of the song”. This helped bring that conversation between the painter and cellist out of the screen and into your room, or headphones. It also adds a unique element to the music that only the video version of the song can offer, which we think is cool. You aren’t just hearing the song again, but now you’re hearing it in the context of this short film that breathes new life into song itself. We’ll definitely be exploring this more as our journey as a band continues."

Fayne, from Montreal, deliver heavy-driven drums, crushing guitar riffs and bass lines, crowned with powerful clean and screaming vocals. Elements of The ContortionistCar Bomb, and Misery Signals all crash and collide in glorious splendour, heard to full effect on 'Empath'.

Fayne’s progressive metalcore experience causes physical and emotional responses you never knew existed. Introspection, the process of understanding and the hunt to discover what’s behind the veil of everyday life, are some of Fayne’s state-altering musical themes.

The band began to make waves in the mid -00s, performing alongside AlexisonfireUnderoath, and Hopesfall. After pursuing other musical interests, the band reunited with 2014's The Queen Of Kings, leading to a self-booked 9-day tour through Quebec and Ontario, as well as supporting slots for The Contortionist and Vanna.

Fayne then recruited Justin Furtado (formerly of Red Skies and Feels Like Home) on vocals, before releasing their debut LP Journals in 2017. Released in 2018, the band's single 'Grimspeak' saw success with strong streaming figures, holding the #4 spot on CJLO's LOUD! Chart, and placing them at #67 on CJLO's Best Metal Band of 2019 list.

Blackened sludge band Mastiff release blistering new single/video 'Repulse'

UK five-piece and recent Entertainment One (eOne) signees Mastiff have released their new video for 'Repulse'. Premiered via Revolver Magazine, the track is the second to be taken from their devastatingly heavy Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth album, set for release on 10th September.

The new track bleeds apathy and disgust, grinding and churning through sludge-inspired verses layered with dissonant guitar work. 'Repulse' erupts with a bludgeoning breakdown, expanding into areas of doom and death metal.

View Mastiff's 'Repulse' video here: https://youtu.be/WonAIjp1Y1I

Pre-order Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth here: https://www.mastiff-hchc.com

Commenting on the video, the band said: “‘Repulse’ was a song that we started writing fairly early on in the process of putting Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth together, and in some ways is maybe the most traditional Mastiff song on the album, in the sense that it’s a swirling tornado of sludge-fuelled metalcore with a big, obnoxious breakdown at the end. It was important that we had something that acted as a bridge between ‘Plague’ and ‘Leave Me…’, though we’d definitely say this is a more refined take on that sound, and might be the closest to catchy that we’re ever likely to get.

“We’re not the most politically charged band out there, but ‘Repulse’ is a direct reaction to spineless, self-serving world leaders like the one we’re currently being forced to suffer in the UK, and the orange-faced nightmare our transatlantic friends just escaped from.

"‘Repulse’ also marks the first time Mastiff has ever attempted any kind of narrative in one of our promo videos, and also the first time we’re ever let our mask of sullen misery slip to reveal that we’re actually a set of silly boys who like to make people laugh as much as grimace. We hope that hasn’t spoiled the mystique for too many people!”

Crafted in just five days at No Studio with producer Joe Clayton (Pijn, Wren, Leeched), the band’s third full-length, Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth, is a misanthropic masterpiece. The sorrow-filled souls of every miserable cretin it reaches will stir in basements, hovels, pubs, and darkened alleyways. Conceived during a pandemic-enforced longest stretch between Mastiff records, the album paints on the band’s familiar canvas, but with a far larger palette than ever before.

Forged in 2014, Mastiff's unique combination of blackened sludge, grindcore, and powerviolence creates a bleak and chaotic atmosphere, sounding as if the spawn of CrowbarThis Is Hell, and Napalm Death composed an album inside the Lake Of Fire. The unrelenting, brutish curmudgeon aura of Mastiff can be deceptive however, as bright sparks of nuance and jarring adventurousness lurk behind every riff, rumble, and anguished, painstaking bellow stitching together a soundtrack suitable for betrayal, depression, self-loathing, and total despair, with winking, devilish glee. The bulldozing din of Mastiff is akin to the catharsis in setting something aflame just to watch it burn.

Mastiff will bring their odes of antipathy to stages this autumn on a short UK run with Calligram. See all confirmed dates below:

About Mastiff

A miserable band from a miserable town. Mastiff hails from a tiny port city called Kingston Upon Hull, founded by 12th-century monks, and bombed to the brink of obliteration during World War II. Over the years, spiraling social depravity, poor education, and crushing economic collapse pummeled the English town, rendering it dreary and inhospitable. Hull is the end of the road for many, literally and figuratively, as its geographical location ensures that it’s not quite on the way to anywhere. It’s a specific type of human-made hell in which some folks seem destined to die without ever having left. It’s also the kind of place capable of grotesque beauty where suffocated artists might thrive.

Thank heavens for Hull, then, because Mastiff churns out delightfully depressing missives of misanthropy. Determinedly swaying between harrowing bleakness and hateful immorality, Mastiff weaponises their world-weariness and wit with brutal sludge and volatile, raw, hardcore grind. If a festival featuring Napalm Death, Nails, Converge, and Tragedy somehow survived a “Hull Blitz” of the nuclear variety to emerge as a post-apocalyptic, five-headed beast? Its name would be Mastiff.

A pair of early EP outbursts summoned a furious fuzzed-out thunder, reminiscent of the sludgy bar room brawl rock favored in New Orleans, with shades of the darkness cloaking fellow English bands of the doomier variety. Wrank (2016) and the Bork EP (2017) furthered the despair and paranoia.

And then sophomore album Plague blew the damn doors down. Recorded live-in-the-studio in just two days, Plague demonstrated Mastiff's seamless shapeshifting from harsh noise to blackened hardcore and back again. The sludge still seeped from the foundations, like a foul stench from under the floorboards. Despite the raw recording setting, Mastiff somehow sounded more polished and less restrained at the same time. A slew of stark raving reviews from sometimes disgust-adverse tastemakers like Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, and Metal Injection symbolised Mastiff's momentum.

Mastiff put their open-wound sound and spirit on display at shows with CrowbarBiohazardConjurerCult Leader, and Iron Monkey, among others. They’ve proved adept and capable at delivering devastating performances with a diverse cross-section of heavy acts and their respective audiences. Festival appearances propelled the band’s miserable might, deepening a nascent cult status.

The Breathing Process stream new single 'Heir to None'
unnamed - 2021-08-13T145820.336.jpg

US blackened deathcore six-piece The Breathing Process have unveiled their new single ‘Heir to None’, another glimpse of their new album Labyrinthian, out 8th October via Unique Leader.

The band comment: "‘Heir To None’ explores the orchestral and theatrical elements within our sound. Lyrically, Heir to None is a mad ballad, celebrating an inherent bloodlust. There’s insanity at the core of narcissism. To be of no flag, and no affiliation with your fellow man. In this madness, one will crown themselves their own king."

This follows previous single 'Shroud' and the band's first single 'Wilt', which featured David Simonich from Signs Of The Swarm. Watch the 'Wilt' video here: https://youtu.be/hJ9HHX7bksI

Alongside their counterparts in Abigail Williams and Winds of PlagueTBP were the first out the gates in terms of bringing a symphonic, melody driven black metal influence into modern deathcore, setting the benchmark in 2008 with their genre melding debut In Waking : Divinity.

Fusing Unearth Oncoming Storm era style breakdowns with Dimmu Borgir flair reminiscent of Puritannical era, then adding the syncopated attack of the likes of DecapitatedTBP had unknowingly created a sound that would be imitated by many to come. TBP are the true originators of modern blackened deathcore and have returned to claim their crowns.

Their fourth album Labyrinthian is a majestic and nightmare fuelled journey deep into blackened death metal done how it's supposed to be. Featuring guest vocals from David John Simonich (Signs of the Swarm), Jamie Graham (Viscera) & a monumental mix and master from Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Rivers of Nihil)

Diablo Swing Orchestra announce new album Swagger & Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole (Candlelight/Spinefarm)

Tim Burton’s dream band, Diablo Swing Orchestra, are parading down the rabbit hole on album number five. The fearlessly progressive eight-piece Swedish ensemble are poised to return with their fifth album Swagger & Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole, on Día de los Muertos, 2nd November, via Candlelight/Spinefarm.

Ahead of the album the band have released their first single 'War Painted Valentine'. DSO are known for pairing elements of jazz, swing, classical and progressive rock with just about everything in between, so it comes as no surprise that the first single from Swagger & Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole is a fusion of genres best described as if Sepultura and Die Antwoord decided to write a song for the Carnival in Rio.

Since their foundation in 2003 the band have released four studio albums which push musical boundaries to the extreme with humour, creativity and a healthy dose of positive aggression. Their debut The Butcher’s Ballroom was a breath of fresh air when it came out in 2006 to worldwide critical acclaim. The band's fifth effort Swagger & Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole is by far their most ambitious undertaking which pays tribute to all four previous releases and adds some new colours to their already broad pallet of sounds.

DSO have once again teamed up with producer Roberto Laghi (In Flames, Hardcore Superstars) who has become almost the ninth member of the orchestra. Together they've dug deeply into each of the genres explored in the thirteen album tracks and worked hard to find the appealing genre characteristics to forge their own sound. This approach has resulted in a impressive list of guest musicians and some very interesting clashes between sounds which, at least on paper, shouldn’t work. Listeners with an open mind will be rewarded by numerous goodies littered throughout the album, ranging from the tribal assault that is 'War Painted Valentine' to the Zeppelin-gospel-infused 'Snake Oil Baptism'.

As with many bands Covid-19 presented multiple challenges but also granted opportunities which allowed them to take their time in the studio since there was no tour waiting to happen. The mixing process alone took over half a year but Diablo Swing Orchestra are confident that they've produced an album which will leave an indelible mark, whilst inspiring others to try out fresh ideas on genre blending.
