Boston's Great American Ghost have released their new single, 'Womb', in conjunction with their new EP Torture World, out today, 21st January, via MNRK Heavy.

The track captures the band at their heaviest yet, tearing through instrumental technicality and breathing new life into the deathcore scene. Vocalist Ethan Harrison comments, "if you don't bang your head to 'Womb', you must actually be dead."

Produced by Will Putney (A Day to Remember, Knocked Loose, The Amity Affliction), who also handled the band's critically-adored 2019 LP Power Through Terror, Great American Ghost use Torture World to direct old-school hardcore wrath at hypocrisy, apathy, and self-loathing, delivered in a dark cloud of relentlessly bludgeoning riffs. The EP's title track blends atmospheric melodies with unrelenting heaviness, maneuvering swiftly between classic death metal, uplifting hardcore, and double bass-fuelled fury. 'Womb' is as fast and severe as anything originating from the frozen forests of Scandinavia, swinging wildly back and forth between blackened death and slow sludge. 'Death Forgives No One' concludes the proceedings with a progressive bend, equal parts driving and haunting with an almost esoteric quality beneath it all.

The triumphant post-pandemic return in front of 10,000 enthusiastic people at The Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts, was a testament to just how successfully Great American Ghost connect through their steady stream of furious music. Dubbed as being "always hateful, always pissed," the band steadily built a devoted following with the bleak and punishing Everyone Leaves (2015), Hatred Stems From The Seed (2017), Don't Come Back EP (2016), and Power Through Terror (2019).

Even as the worldwide shutdown and personal adversities big and small threatened to derail the band, perseverance ultimately prevailed, resulting in the four-song Torture World EP poised to take the band's vicious bile in new directions.

"We were excited about Power Through Terror and ready to hit the road as much as humanly possible," Harrison recalls. "We had a bunch of touring ready to roll when the record came out in February. Then we were locked down in March. It was a really long eighteen months for us, like most people. There were a lot of points where really bad things happened, and we thought, 'Well, maybe we just don't want to do the band anymore.' My mental health was going downward. We had a really horrible year, honestly."

As the light began to creep in toward the end of the tunnel, with plans for shows and even touring on the horizon, Harrison and his bandmates - Niko Gasparrini and Davier Perez - began to feel some glimmers of hope. "The conversation started to feel more real. It gave me a feeling that I hadn't had in a long time. I missed the band even more than I realised. We didn't have any pressure or expectations in terms of how Torture World should sound. We did what we wanted and this is what came from it. There's a larger scope of sound happening than on our earlier releases. Bells, percussion, a lot of extra instrumentation. And the riffs are still there."

Early releases tackled feelings of hopelessness, thoughts of suicide, and bitterness about broken relationships with naked aggression. On Power Through TerrorHarrison turned his poison pin outward, going after government complicity in sex trafficking and abuse; a friend's debilitating struggle with alcoholism; the fear of failure that keeps so many bound up in apathy. Torture World tackles several issues with urgency and passion, not the least of which is the struggle for equality and the resulting social unrest magnified in recent years. "As a white cisgender male, I'm not in a position to say that I'm oppressed. It's not my story to tell," Harrison cautions. "But I have a huge problem with the disparity that occurs inside of this civilisation that we occupy. Torture World has a duel meaning. Some songs on the EP are extremely political and there are some extremely personal songs. Both things bleed into each other."

It's an approach to the lyrical side of the band that continues to apply to their music. Since the first time a punk rocker palm-muted a guitar, there's been a debate about what constitutes as 'true' hardcore, crossover, thrash, metalcore, ad nauseam. Great American Ghost are comfortably beyond that conversation. "I'm so sick of the whole subgenre thing," explains Harrison"We've always been in this middle ground. Some people who listen to metal don't see us as a metal band. We've never been a straight-up hardcore band. So, we don't really care. I only care whether or not people get it. As long as they get it, or it changes them or touches them emotionally in some way. Call us whatever you want."

Legendary brutal death metallers Pyrexia return with new album Gravitas Maximus. Now entering their fourth decade, the quintet return heavier and stronger than ever, proving once again to be one the most important forces in extreme music.

On the album, guitarist Chris Basile comments: "When you write an album like Sermon of Mockery, it’s like Moby Dick with this giant whale that you have to conquer. I spent over two decades throwing harpoons and missing every time. Gravitas Maximus goes right through the heart of the whale and kills it dead. Along with everything else."

Gravitas Maximus was recorded at Chapel Sound Recording Studios, aka “The Chapel”, Long Island, New York by Chris Basile, and mixed and mastered by Miguel Teresso at Demigod Recording Studio, Portugal.

In 1987 guitarist Chris Basile joined the band Mortuary along with Terrence Hobbs, Doug Cerrito and Mike Smith, all of Suffocation. Together over 30 songs were written by the band with many of the songs and riffs written during this period appearing on both Pyrexia and Suffocation’s early releases leading too many comparisons.

In 1990 Basile met with Guy Marchais, Rob Shimonski, Daryl Wagner and Mike Andrejko and Pyrexia was formed. They went on to release their 1991 demo Liturgy of Impurity and later the classic 1993 full-length Sermon of Mockery, cementing their place in the anoles of death metal history.

Pyrexia continued to release one seminal release after another including their 1997 System of the Animal, and even joining forces with Trevor Peres of Obituary in 2001 to form the band Catastrophic, which went on to release their debut album The Cleansing on Metal Blade records.

In 2006 Pyrexia signed with Unique Leader records and began an extensive campaign of touring and performing both in America and overseas under the UL moniker. A tradition that continues today with no end in sight.

Swedish alternative metal act Aviana releases video for new single & announces new members

'Obsession' out now via Arising Empire

Swedish alternative metal act Aviana has released a video for his new single 'Obsession', out now via Arising Empire. 'Obsession' follows previous singles 'Rage', 'Oblivion', 'Overcome' and 'Retaliation', which marked Aviana's return earlier this year, led solely by Joel Holmqvist - until today.

Check out the video for 'Obsession' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1zb9p8JEgo
Stream/purchase 'Obsession' here: https://aviana.lnk.to/obsession

'Obsession' toys with a dark vibe, as the band tell a story weaved around the subject of mental health issues. Joel Holmqvist explains: "The lyrics of this song are a bit more to the emotional side and about a subject that I personally feel we should talk a lot more about. We wanted to visualise that not only with the lyrics but also bring it to life in the video."

Over the last couple of years, many people experienced dark times and suffered great loss. Joel Holmqvist, vocalist of Swedish metalcore act Aviana, was one of those people. Despite the successful release of their sophomore album Epicenter via Arising Empire in 2019, all his former bandmates declared they were leaving Aviana in March 2020.

Holmqvist quickly realised that he was not done with Aviana and decided to continue with the project himself. Throughout the pandemic, he has gathered strength to build something new and special - the next chapter of Aviana. Today, however, Aviana reveals four new, masked and unknown individuals who join Holmqvist to complete the band.

Aviana’s new sound is heavier than ever before and offers a taste of what’s to come, Holmqvist assures."I'm building this up with the new Aviana now. There's a new chapter, a new story and a new era coming!" he concludes.

See Aviana supporting Kill The Lights and Imminence at one of the following dates:

'Venerate Me' continues to clearly show that HAMMERFALL are in top shape by delivering what Rock It! Magazine calls, “their strongest songs in years”. Expectedly, singer Joacim Cans doesn’t fail to leave a mark with his gripping vibrato and ever-powerful vocal projection that – in combination with strong guitar work and on-point drumming – make 'Venerate Me' an outstanding yet trademark HAMMERFALL hymn.

Founding member and guitarist Oscar Dronjak commented on 'Venerate Me': “The second single is here, and I’m very, very proud of it! The music was written during the darkest, most uninspiring days of the pandemic and still came out as one of the strongest on the whole album. Joacim’s fantastic lyric idea makes this track really stand out, and the special guest appearance towards the end really pushes it over the edge!”

Singer Joacim Cans adds: “The song is over loaded with enchanting melodies and a very catchy chorus. Lyrically one of my greatest efforts dealing with the fact that we die twice! First when we take our last breath and second when someone says your name for the last time. Say my name and I will never die!”

HAMMERFALL - Venerate Me

'Venerate Me' marks a special anniversary – Oscar Dronjak’s 50th birthday! HAMMERFALL’s guitarist has dedicated most of his 50 years to the metal scene, starting as a teenage guitarist in death metal bands and emerging as one of the most known guitarists in the world of heavy metal today, with his trademark sound and legendary hammer guitar.

'Venerate Me' follows the first single 'Hammer of Dawn', watch the video here: https://youtu.be/blv-O2To6iA

As one of the main forces in heavy metal, HAMMERFALL have dominated not only the Swedish album charts, but album charts across Europe throughout their extensive career, while earning gold status thrice. Faced with the daunting task of following up the band’s last studio album, Dominion, a record that fans and critics hailed as one of the band's strongest releases, HAMMERFALL collectively met the challenge head on and have delivered what many early listeners are predicting as the best metal album of 2022, and a high point of the band’s catalogue.

Track listing:

1. Brotherhood
2. Hammer of Dawn
3. No Son of Odin
4. Venerate Me
5. Reveries
6. Too Old to Die Young
7. Not Today
8. Live Free or Die
9. State of the W.I.L.D.

Hammer of Dawn starts off with remarkable opener 'Brotherhood', a hymn echoing the deep connection of bandleaders Joacim Cans and Oscar Dronjak with their loyal Templars of Steel worldwide. Other tracks on the album present one smasher after another, with songs like 'Reveries', 'No Son Of Odin' and 'Venerate Me' - the latter featuring an appearance by none other than King Diamond - making sure it will go down as another milestone in the career of the Swedes.

Hammer of Dawn was produced by long-time collaborator Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, Opeth), who handled mixing, mastering, drum recording, and shared the duty of recording guitars and bass with Pontus Norgren and Oscar Dronjak. Jacob Hansen (Volbeat), produced the lead vocals.

When HAMMERFALL released their debut album, Glory To The Brave, in 1997, it signalled the second coming of heavy metal. Since that very day, HAMMERFALL have proudly flown the heavy metal flag high and while doing so have influenced a generation of musicians. They have also left a twenty-five year long trail of classic timeless music, sold-out shows and an army of loyal fans, aka the Templars Of Steel, in their wake. Rest assured everyone, that legacy continues and in fact strengthens with the arrival of Hammer of Dawn.

Fans can already look forward to seeing Hammer of Dawn live, as in 2022, HAMMERFALL will go on an extensive co-headlining tour through Europe, together with German metal stars Helloween.

Impending Doom release punishingly heavy single / video 'Culture of Death'

Hellbent EP available now via MNRK Heavy

Californian death metallers, Impending Doom, have released their new punishingly heavy single 'Culture of Death'. The ferocious hymn comes from their Hellbent EP, released via MNRK Heavy.

Check out the new single and video for 'Culture of Death' here: https://youtu.be/OXn47Snxt4M

Order the Hellbent EP here: https://hellbent-doom.com/

On the new single, vocalist Brook Reeves comments: “’Culture Of Death’ is a song about sacrificing your beliefs to become someone you’re not for people who don’t care, only to feel numb in the end and the wanting to feel alive again.”

Recorded with engineer Joseph Calleriro at Dungeon by the Sea in Los Angeles and mixed by longtime band collaborator Will Putney (Knocked Loose, The Ghost Inside, Thy Art Is Murder), Hellbent is a blistering five-song blast of readily identifiable Impending Doom brutality, with just enough of a modern flourish. As reliable as ever, the band endeavoured to bring woe with crushing heaviness, sick death metal and grindcore riffage, impossible guttural growls, and steadfast reverence for God. The five-track EP includes punishingly incisive entries into the band's esteemed canon, which stretches back to their 2005 demo.

The new EP arrived adorned with an arresting cover courtesy of Jim Pavelec, an illustrator specialising in the occult, sci-fi, horror, and fantasy, including pieces for classic RPG Dungeons & Dragons. Bassist David Sittig explains: "We'd never done an EP before this, and we spent a lot of time writing the music on Hellbent. We don't traditionally have many surprises with the art, but we wanted to try something different. We've used the same couple of guys to create art for us, but Jim had created this piece already and we loved it so much we decided to reach out to him."

Hellbent Tracklisting:

1. Satanic Panic
2. New World Horror
3. Culture Of Death
4. Hellbent
5. I Must End

The Sin and Doom of Godless Men, Impending Doom's blissfully devastating 2005 demo, was shocking in its urgent immediacy and its unashamed outspokenness. But that demo was merely a step towards the total devastation that was their 2007 debut album, Nailed. Dead. Risen., which shook the proverbial Earth with its uncompromising vision of what they had transfigured with elements of death metal, grind, and hardcore.

The series of increasingly diverse and intense releases that followed never compromised, and were always challenging and pushing the limits of the genre. With the likes of The Serpent Servant (2009), There Will Be Violence (2010), Baptized In Filth (2012), Death Will Reign (2013), and the back-to-basics bludgeoning of The Sin and Doom, Vol. II (2018), each appealed to the faithful and faithless alike. Combining crushing riffs and an unashamed point of view, each of their half dozen albums demonstrate the power of outspoken deathcore devastation.

New artist Kubrick streams second single 'Devastate'

For fans of Bring Me The Horizon, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish

'Dizzyingly raucous' - Rock Sound

New alternative artist Kubrick has revealed his second single, 'Devastate'.

Watch the mesmerising new video for 'Devastate' here: https://youtu.be/JNp2vsRB0aU

Stream here: https://ditto.fm/devastate-kubrick

Kubrick will be playing his debut live show at London's Underworld on 23rd April with TheCityIsOurs. Tickets available here.

Of the new single, Kubrick says: "I wrote 'Devastate' about those bands and artists who care far too much about their clout and how cool they appear to people in their little toxic music scene bubbles. ⁣It's not always easy to stay vigilant in the digital age we live in but if you are an aspiring musician, painter, creator, anything, focus on your art. Don’t focus on what everyone else is doing. It can and will only affect your success if you let it."

Kubrick has been performing and composing his music in various guises for over a decade. A child of two opera singers, and grandson of the globally-famous film director that bears his name, Kubrick was constantly surrounded by creative influences.

Kubrick's favourite artists and composers are those who created music depicting their experiences of pain and loss, as well as horror and sci-fi soundtracks. Kubrick himself is no stranger to tragedy, losing his mother at a young age and subsequently his close friend and fellow bandmember in Shields.

“Whilst the trauma of these losses is something I wish I could erase,” states Kubrick, "the perspective I gained from those experiences helped me leaps and bounds in my ability to empathise with others. As well as lay a foundation for the type of music I now enjoy to create”.

Kubrick strives to release the most authentic and unforgivingly personal songs which his audience can also interpret in a multitude of ways. Driving his sound is his unique cocktail of growling guitars and cinematic synthesizers which blend seamlessly with his multi-varied vocal styles. Elements of artists as varied as Bring Me The Horizon, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and Linkin Park all can be heard from this truly talented new force.

As Kubrick emphasises, “I don’t think I will ever just stick to one “sound” or “genre” as my taste is continually evolving. My songwriting will never be dictated by what people want to hear, or what’s trending at any particular point. The plan is just to be unforgivably myself."

Overdrive out 18th March 2022 via Arising Empire

Metalcore quartet Breathe Atlantis have announced their eagerly awaited new album Overdrive. Due for release on 18th March 2022 via Arising Empire, Breathe Atlantis complete their metamorphosis into one of the hottest acts in Germany’s heavy music scene.

Overdrive is available to pre-order in various formats here: https://arisingempire.com/overdrive

"Overdrive has become a turning point for us, which we all needed. On the record we process our past, in which we were often frustrated and depressed due to external circumstances. We felt limited and constricted by expectations or external ideas. On this album we just did what we felt like doing and wrote and shouted everything from the soul. This is our most honest and emotional album we've written so far and I think it will speak to a lot of people," explains vocalist Nico Schiesewitz.

Featuring singles ‘Changes’ (feat. Eskimo Callboy’s Nico Sallah), ‘Earthquake’, ‘Savior’ (feat. Imminence’s Eddie Berg) and title track ‘Overdrive’, Breathe Atlantis display a maturity on their new record that will no doubt skyrocket them to success. Working with producer Andy Posdziech (Any Given Day, Caliban, Nasty), the four-piece brought their true identity to the surface and wrapped it in a modern, aggressive sound.

"Musically, we just went the way that felt best for us. There were only two choices left: Start over or admit the end of that path. We are here to express our feelings through music and deliver the most honest and meaningful art. It just felt right for us to aim for a darker and heavier sound than ever before - this ongoing pandemic was of course fuel for the fire.”

The first new material since their 2019 album Soulmade, Overdrive is two years in the making and packed with bigger, heavier riffs and driving, forceful drums. Schiesewitz's relentless, bone-grinding shouts will send shivers down your spine, until the stadium-ready choruses hit you right in the gut.
