Canadian rock duo The Standstills release new single featuring Eagles Of Death Metal

Two-piece Canadian guitar-driven outlaw rock n roll band, The Standstills, share their new single, 'Motherlode', featuring legendary rock/alt band, Eagles Of Death Metal. The track is taken from from their upcoming album, Shockwave, due out 4th November via MNRK.

The Standstills’ guitarist / vocalist Jonny Fox commented on working with Eagles of Death Metal's Jesse Hughes: “Renée (drums / vocals) and I spent some time in LA to get inspired to write what would eventually become our new album, Shockwave. If you are a musician and spend any significant time in Los Angeles you will run into the city’s unofficial mayor, Father Badass, Jesse Hughes. We instantly hit it off, loving similar styles of music and sharing the same outlook on creative arts. Before we knew it, we were at a Bar-B-Que at his place that turned into a full-tilt jam session in his living room that lasted a couple days. Unfortunately, we never stopped to record any of it. Fast forward a few months to when we completed 'Motherlode' with Neil Sanderson of Three Days Grace; the song reminded us of our time out West with Jesse, and it just felt natural to as him and Josh Jove to be a part of it. Without a second’s hesitation, Jesse jumped at it. He is truly one of a kind, not afraid to speak his mind, and we loved that.”

Over their career, The Standstills (comprised of husband-and-wife duo, Jonny Fox, on vocals/guitar, and Renée Couture, on drums/vocals), have built a reputation for transcendent anthem-making with an earnestly steadfast formula: gigantic hooks, unapologetically hypnotic grooves, and infectious unabashedly cool riffs, which can be heard in force on Shockwave. Produced by Neil Sanderson from Three Days Grace and mixed by two-time GRAMMY Award winner Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Santana, Daughtry), the album blends immediately accessible choruses with magnetic layers of depth revealed in repeated listens.

The Standstills signature sound first emerged on a pair of indie releases. From the Devil’s Porch, their 2015 EP, produced three successful Active Rock singles, resulting in a 2016 win for Best New Group or Solo Artist: Mainstream Rock at the Canadian Radio Music Awards.

“We’ve completely opened and exposed who we are in a way that we’ve never done before,” says Fox. “It felt like the right time. We’ve always gone with our gut instincts. We felt ready to do it. This is the album we’ve been working towards. I hope it connects to people in a deep way, as much as it’s meant to us in the creation and the life experiences that it took to make the album.”

Beginning in November, after the release of Shockwave, The Standstills will embark on a Canadian arena tour with Three Days Grace. Kicking off 8th November in Vancouver, the tour will see the band make their way east with a final date in Toronto on 27th November. Then in 2023, the duo will board the ShipRocked Cruise and rock passengers from Florida to Amber Cove, Half Moon Cay & Grand Turk. More tour details below and stay tuned for more as the Shockwave journey unfolds.

Time, The Valuator release new single 'Glow'

German modern heavy quintet Time, The Valuator have released their new single 'Glow', out now via Long Branch Records. The track is the third glimpse into their upcoming album, due for release in spring 2023.

Check out the visualiser for 'Glow' here: https://youtu.be/bkFQdXUfBOA

Stream 'Glow' here: https://orcd.co/timethevaluator_glow

Time, The Valuator comment on the new single:

"'Glow' deals with the belief that all of our thoughts, actions and feelings are a result of what we already have experienced. However we tend to make irrational decisions, which are in breach of those experiences. Something unknown might be re-encoding our thoughts and feelings constantly, which leads to the question - how can we deal with this?"

With songs full of emotion, powerful vocals and infectious groove, Time, The Valuator have risen to become one of the most promising new acts in the modern rock sphere. The German quintet impresses not only with their music but also with their message. In the words of guitarist Rene Möllenbeck, "Time, The Valuator strive to create something to be remembered."

Drawing on elements of progressive metal, alternative rock, djent and pop, Time, The Valuator create a unique sound that pushes genre boundaries and touches emotionally. Their 2018 debut album, How Fleeting, How Fragile (Long Branch Records), received international critical acclaim and singles like 'Elusive Reasons', 'When I Meet Death' or 'Vibrant' have since been streamed millions of times.

German alt-rock duo Kill Strings release video for new single 'Orange Lilies'

German alt-rock duo Kill Strings have released a video for their single 'Orange Lilies'. The track is taken from the band's debut album LIMBO, out now via MNRK Music Group.

Check out the video for 'Orange Lilies' here: https://youtu.be/eXug8RGiGQk

Stream/purchase LIMBO here: https://killstrings.bandcamp.com/album/limbo

Vocalist/guitarist Julian Lee comments on the single:

"In corrupted souls, germs of hate grow best and scatter even more hate and anger in other souls. It’s a vicious cycle of negative emotions that 'Orange Lilies' describes. The song calls for the germs of hate to be smothered within oneself first, lest one loses oneself and others in the maelstrom."

With hard-hitting appearances at Germany's Open Flair Festival, the Oakfield and Hurricane Festival, as well as two successful EPs, Kill Strings have already garnered support from a variety of playlists including 'Rock Rotation', Germany's most popular rock playlist on Spotify.

Now comes the next step, their debut album LIMBO. Produced by Frieder Does (Blackout Problems, Antiheld), LIMBO unfolds in its perfect beauty. Singles 'Let Me Dream' and 'Navigation' hint at what's to come with a blend of alternative rock and epic pop, sometimes cinematically wide, sometimes with intense reduction. 'Orange Lilies' flickers between stirring anthem and intense calm, 'Whatever It Takes' wires dark moods with sky-high melodic arcs, 'Evermore' and 'Black Gold' groove like hell and 'Monster' combines thick beats, casual backings and features a stadium chorus worthy of the repeat button.

Kill Strings have picked up speed and the sky is the limit. Have you reached your destination?

Grammy-nominated doom legends Candlemass release video to new album title-track

Legendary classic doom icons Candlemass recently announced the release of their new album, Sweet Evil Sun, out 18th November 2022 via Napalm Records and today unveil a video for its title-track.

Watch the new video to 'Sweet Evil Sun' here: https://youtu.be/zYk1adsNZcw

Pre-order Sweet Evil Sun here: https://napalmrecords.com/candlemass

Following on from first single 'Scandinavian Gods', the title-track carries the torch of heavy doom to the next level and showcases that, after almost 40 years of existence, their creativity sees no bounds. 'Sweet Evil Sun' kicks in with warning guitar feedback before sludging a heavy-as-hell riff as Johan Langquist deftly warbles through melancholic, beckoning passages and a hooky chorus. His imposing vocals fit each riff and tone perfectly, emerging as an instrument in itself. A brand new official music video underlines this massive wall of sound the appropriate way, heating up the anticipation for everything that is about to come.

Leif Edling commented on 'Sweet Evil Sun': "It took me only an hour or so to write, but it turned out to be not only the title track of Sweet Evil Sun, but also one of the best songs on it. Nice riff, great chorus and one heck of a guitar solo from Lars! Immediate, epic, heavy, catchy! It kicks ass!!"

With this top-notch offering, recorded at NOX studio in Stockholm, the Swedish force cantered around Leif Edling continue their unmatched legacy, following the inimitable The Door to Doom (2019) and proving once more that they reign as one of the heaviest metal bands on earth, bringing epic doom to the world of metal.

“The kings of doom are back and in a big way! Sweet Evil Sun is a black gem of the genre: powerful production, pounding drums, rough guitar sound and well felt vocal harmonies. 9 solid songs plus an outro to remind us that CANDLEMASS are the Black Sabbath of my generation, they are the ones who carry this heavy legacy and they do it with epic glory.” - Vorph (Samael founder, singer & guitarist)

"'Sweet Evil Sun' proves that Candlemass is like a good wine or whiskey - these doom metal
pioneers are getting better and better the more they age.” -
Inferno, FI

After working on this massive piece of art for eighteen months in total, with Sweet Evil SunCandlemass brings back all the grandness of their early years, exploring themes of ambition and strife, hope and failure. It comes as no surprise that, alongside the band, renowned producer Marcus Jidell captured their massive, smoky guitar tones, powerful drums and larger-than-life vocals, offering a truly unique, high quality sonic experience.

Recorded at NOX studio in Stockholm, Sweden, Sweet Evil Sun impressively showcases that, after almost forty years in the game, the creativity of these Swedish doom masters sees no bounds. Through the power of wall-shaking riffs, incredible vocal performances and the blood and spirit of classic heavy metal, Sweet Evil Sun shines as a masterpiece of impending legend that truly honours the epic doom metal cult of Candlemass.

The artwork for Sweet Evil Sun was illustrated by the skilled hand of Erik Rovanperä, the architect behind Candlemass’ visual style since Psalms for the Dead (2012).

Leif Edling on the new album: Sweet Evil Sun is about hope, striving, adoration and failure. It's about all the personal battles that you have, but also the never-ending decay of humanity.

"The record took over a year to make and there's not a bad track on it! We had a fantastic time recording it and are really looking forward to the release. It's doom, it's metal! It is the essence of Candlemass put into one album!”

Opening track 'Wizard Of The Vortex' instantly casts a spell with a riff so powerful, the listener is immediately ensnared. Title track 'Sweet Evil Sun' kicks in with warning guitar feedback before sludging a heavy-as-hell riff as Johan Langquist deftly warbles through melancholic, beckoning passages and a hooky chorus. His imposing vocals fit each riff and tone perfectly, emerging as an instrument in itself. Jennie-Ann Smith (Avatarium) lends her beautiful voice to the theatrical, grim 'When Death Sighs', creating a shimmering, intermingled chorus duet eventually backed by rising organs and a marching rhythm. The haunting atmosphere is highlighted by an amazing guitar solo that reads like a story as it bends and descends, marking the sign of death on the listener’s door.

Swiss progressive death metal quintet Kassogtha announce tour with Avatar and release new single

Photo Credit: Askan KnupertelliEarlier this year, fast-rising Swiss progressive death metallers Kassogtha emerged from Fascination Street Studios with guns blazing. After perfecting their new concept record rEvolve with producer/recording engineer David Castillo (Carcass, Opeth, Leprous) and mixing engineer Linus Corneliusson (Ihsahn, Amorphis), the Swiss quintet released four new songs in quick-fire succession.

Now the quintet have released their fifth single 'Complacency', accompanied by a video featuring live footage from their steamrolling recent gig with Triptykon. The track drops alongside details of their support tour of Swedish heavy metal troupe Avatar. 'Complacency' is the final glimpse of Kassogtha's incredible debut LP, rEvolve, before it's released on 11th November via Klang Machine Music, the heavy music management and label co-founded by metal wizard Merlin Sutter (Cellar Darling, ex-Eluveitie).

Of 'Complacency', vocalist Stephany comments: “'Complacency' personifies depression and gives it a voice by modelling it onto an ugly, vicious monster. This is the point of no return in the rEvolve story: that moment where you choose to let everything go and fall into depression’s arms, definitively trapped in the cycle of complacency."

Kassogtha will support Avatar across Europe next spring. Dates as follows:

Kassogtha place authenticity and sincerity above smoke and mirrors: a genuine metal band for true metal fans that takes the genre further without abandoning its core ingredients. From Pink Floyd to Gojira, Kassogtha’s no-nonsense brand of groovy progressive death metal combines a variety of influences to create a steamrolling fusion of irresistible riffs, neck-breaking drums and a vocal range covering devastating growls and ethereal melodies.

Kassogtha was brought to life by vocalist-lyricist Stephany and chief songwriter Morty in Geneva, Switzerland. The band’s debut album A New World to Come (2017) was followed by their sophomore EP The Call (2019), where Kassogtha showcased their musical diversity with an edgy cover of Pink Floyd’s 'Welcome to the Machine'. Having shared the stage with the likes of Cellar Darling, Sirenia, and The Agonist across Europe, Kassogtha recently performed with Triptykon, at which they filmed their 'Complacency' video.

On the band’s upcoming concept album rEvolve, Stephany conquers her inner demons and tells the story of an endless self-destructive cycle of fear, anxiety, and jealousy. In a world that normalises negativity, we have forgotten how to be ourselves — and following a pandemic-enforced long, hard look at humanity and society, this is Stephany’s journey of dealing with these emotions. This album is a perfectly timed release valve for two years of isolation, anxiety and grief — a furious expression of frustration with your own inner demons.

On rEvolve, produced at Stockholm’s legendary Fascination Street Studios with David Castillo (Carcass, Opeth, Leprous), Linus Corneliusson (Ihsahn, Amorphis) and Tony Lindgren (Carcass, Opeth, Katatonia), Kassogtha showcase old school riffs and progressive inspiration, savage grooves and blast beats, creativity and speed, and pure, honest dedication to their craft.

Sugar Horse release new single featuring members of IDLES, Vennart and more

The ever-mercurial, boundary-pushing UK rock quartet Sugar Horse have released their new single, 'Super Army Soldiers', taken from their thrilling new collaborative EP Waterloo Teeth.

Featuring Adam Devonshire (IDLES) and Mike Vennart (Vennart / Biffy Clyro), you can watch the video for 'Super Army Soldiers' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF6Dd0lNrb4

Stream: http://listen.smallpondrec.com/super-army-soldiers

Waterloo Teeth will be released 28th October via Small Pond, and features members of Heriot, Conjurer, IDLES, Biffy Clyro, and many more.

Pre-order Waterloo Teeth here: http://listen.smallpondrec.com/disco-loadout

Of 'Super Army Soldiers', the band say: "Easily the most melodic song on the record, but still very much based around the idea of trying to take dronal music into some kind of pop sphere. Our only song to date with an actual old school guitar solo, courtesy of Mike Vennart."

"The song is a celebration of the limitations of art. Like many others, we are compelled to create. It’s what makes us feel human and helps to drown out the madness all around us. But where there is release, there is also constraint. We are held back by the walls of Western musical harmony, the structural norms of pop music and the ceiling of the English language. These limitations breed creativity, however. If you are forced into a corner, no matter how big, you find interesting ways to inhabit that corner."

IDLES' Adam Devonshire comments: "When your old housemate asks you to play over the top of his incredible band alongside a bunch of other musicians you love, you can't really say no, can you?! Long live Sugar Horse!!"

Full tracklisting:

1. Disco Loadout (ft. Debbie Gough, Heriot, vocals; Damien Sayell, Mclusky, vocals; Matt Loveridge, MXLX, cello)
2. Waterloo Teeth (ft. Dave Larkin, Black Peaks, bass; Will Gardner, Black Peaks, saxophone; Paul Tierney, Lonely Tourist, vocals)
3. Gutted (ft. Kate Davies, Pupil Slicer, vocals; Dan Nightingale, Conjurer, vocals/guitar; Brady Deeprose, Conjurer, vocals/guitar; Conor Marshall, Conjurer, vocals/guitar; Nuala Honan, vocals)
4. Super Army Soldiers (ft. Adam Devonshire, IDLES, bass; Mike Vennart, Oceansize/Biffy Clyro/Vennart, guitar; Connie Matthews, Wych Elm, vocals)

Waterloo Teeth is true demonstration of Sugar Horse's refusal to conform or sit still. A community-building, genre-hopping release, the EP sees Sugar Horse letting the good times roll. Recorded during the Christmas break at Small Pond studios, sleeping among the amps, the four-track record is the Bristol group's excuse to work with some of the coolest musicians on the planet.

Sugar Horse's most out-there music yet, Waterloo Teeth turns ideas on their head. Opening track and first single 'Disco Loadout' is anti-Sugar Horse - a band previously known for long, melodic songs, this song instead is as short and atonal as possible. In contrast track three, 'Gutted' is the everything everywhere at once song, from Shellac-style noise, to Sleep-esque doom, to Cocteau Twins melody and back.

It is apt that Waterloo Teeth is a celebration of the limitations of art. Humans are compelled to create, creation drowns out the madness arounds us as keeps us alive. Where there is release, there is constraint; where there is constraint, there is creativity. It is this circle of life that Sugar Horse thrive in - Waterloo Teeth is a beguiling and irresistible invitation to join the circle.

It's not for nothing that Sugar Horse have become known as a nonconformist band. Their previous EPs Druj and Drugs were acclaimed amalgams of doom, hardcore, stoner and punk, continued by acclaimed debut LP The Live Long After. A band who were due to tour with Black Peaks before the inevitable Covid disruption, and who have toured with Vennart and played ArcTanGent, Sugar Horse have received praise from Upset Magazine, Metal Hammer, Revolver and Kerrang!, among others.

Forming in 2015 as a trio in a flat in Bristol, Sugar Horse fully came into being in 2019 with the addition of Jake Healy on baritone guitar and keyboards. Seeking to break away from emerging trends in their scene, the band's emphasis on simplicity and down-tempo heft belies an impressive sense of self-awareness and maturity. In their own words: "I think the best art is formed when it's creators enforce rigid rules on themselves. Mondrian had geometry, Mark E Smith had his hatred for cigarette taxation and we have a complete disregard for urgency."

UK alt-metal sextet Black Lakes release music video for politically-charged single 'Avarice'

Black Lakes have shared a video for their single 'Avarice', taken from their album For All We've Left Behind released earlier this year. The South Wales-based alt-metal outfit are not shy of a social commentary, and 'Avarice' firmly brings forward this political side of the band, as frontman Will Preston sings the mantra "We can't eat money, we can't breathe money" while the band close off the song in chaotic fashion.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/8KBsHXKe7c8

Frontman Will comments: "The definition for the word avarice is “extreme greed for wealth or material gain”. This is something we all see in our day to day lives, and a concept that many of us struggle to both accept, and live with the consequences of. The song tackles the concept that as a species, we will only realise the error of our ways when it’s far too late. It is only when the last tree has been felled, the last fish caught and the last river run dry that we will seemingly realise that for all our time, sweat and effort spent chasing material gain, we cannot eat, breathe or live on money.."

Black Lakes create a sound which deliberately blurs the boundaries between hard rock and alternative metal, drawing on a wide range of influences from across both scenes. Their debut album For All We've Left Behind was recorded in the Welsh capital with premier hard rock and metal producer Romesh Dodangoda. Their previous single 'Fragments' was picked up across national radio including Kerrang! and the BBC. Despite the impact of the pandemic, the band grew from strength to strength, having been named both a Great Music Stories 'Band of the Year 2021', and 'Live Band of the Year', a critically acclaimed redux set released exclusively for the Spirit of Wildfire festival and making the final of the Hard Rock Hell - Highway to Hell competition at the O2 Academy. Having successfully completed their gofundme campaign to support it, their highly anticipated debut album 'For All We've Left Behind' was released on 22nd February 2022. The band has been touring extensively in its support this year.

Cork alt-rock trio The Last Vinci release tongue-in-cheek cover video of Billie Eilish's 'you should see me in a crown'

Heavy alt-rock trio The Last Vinci, hailing from Ireland and Italy, have shared a video covering pop superstar Billie Eilish's hit 'you should see me in a crown'. The tongue-in-cheek, playful video is a rocked-up and down-tuned version of the original, as the band have fun re-creating Eilish's slick video with their own, less expensive means - featuring plastic spiders, green screen body suits and luscious wigs.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/42wwC1fhNFU

Frontman Alex comments: "We played this cover live on our 2019 EP tour and everybody loved it. So we kept the idea in our back pocket until the right moment came to release it. We love Billie's music; trying to recreate the video was just so much fun. We wanted to put our touch on this pop classic and we are proud of what we achieved. Working on it was pure joy."

The Last Vinci are an alt-rock/stoner trio from Cork, Ireland, led by Alex Vinci, who is well known for his punishing low frequencies provided by a three-amp setup, his “give all you have” energetic attitude, and larger-than-life stage presence.

After a successful self-titled debut album and the subsequent The World, Enda Kenny, The Devil, The Vegans and All The Millenials Shit EP, the band took to their audience to help them create The Revolution is Made Together, The Last Vinci's second full-length release, through a successful crowd-funding campaign. Recorded in Liverpool with producer Tom Peters (Bicurious, Alpha Male Tea Party, God Alone), the album was released on March 4th, 2022 via Narrow Door Records, Alex Vinci's own label, with support from the likes of Alex Baker (Kerrang! Radio). Following the release, the Cork trio embarked on a run of UK and Ireland tour dates, including major festival appearances in Ireland.

The Last Vinci are:
Alex Vinci - Guitar, vocals
Conal Murphy - Bass
Francesco Maerietta Odone - Drums
