Mason Hill, Rews, Led By Lanterns & more complete line-up for Primordial General Mayhem 2023

Primordial Radio is hugely excited to announce the final additions for the Primordial General Mayhem 2023 with Glaswegian modern rockers Mason Hill added as main support to headliners Those Damn Crows on Saturday 29th April 2023, at KK’s Steel Mill in Wolverhampton.

Recorded at Riverside Studios with Scott Taylor, their 2021 album Against The Wall is an acknowledgement of the struggles the band has had to overcome, resulting in one of the most hard-hitting and engaging debut albums to emerge from the British rock scene in recent years.

Also added to the bill is alt-rock force Rews, following the success of their debut album Pyro and sophomore Warriors, the band went on to tour extensively across the globe, including supporting the likes of Halestorm and The Darkness, as well as critically acclaimed performances at festivals such as Glastonbury, 2000 Trees and many more.

Full to the brim with bouncy hooks, heavy riffs and soaring vocals, Led By Lanterns also join the bill, with Insurgent, Fury, Raised By Wolves and Straight For The Sun taking up slots on the Primordial Presents stage.

In addition, confirmed for the Friday night 200-cap pre-party (sold out) is Jøra The Førtuneteller, Wood & Nails and Fangs Out, who will be supporting soulful fuzz rockers Scruffy Bear.

Starting in 2018 as a one-day event with just three bands, the Primordial General Mayhem has become the destination event for Primordial members and rock & metal fans alike.

Combining the power of music and community, the event has previously hosted the likes of Skindred, Devin Townsend, Bob Vylan, Massive Wagons and many more over the past four years with Knotfest describing it as a "Grand Spectacle of Rock Fury".

Now with a new home, the Primordial General Mayhem will be taking place at the illustrious KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton on Saturday 29th April 2023, with an additional intimate 200 cap pre-party also planned for Friday 28th April 2023.

Modern rock's unstoppable force Those Damn Crows have been confirmed as headliners for Saturday 29th April 2023.

In between performing on the main stage at Download Festival 2022, selling out headline shows at the likes of Cardiff Castle, and playing German TV channel WDR's prestigious Rockpalast Crossroads festival, Those Damn Crows recorded Inhale/Exhale, an album that elevates their signature hard-hitting rock to dizzying heights.

The Welsh quintet sadly had to pull out of headlining PGM 22 earlier this year due to vocalist Shane Greenhall injuring his back. This is very much unfinished business, and the Primordial team can't wait for the guys to finally take to the stage and deliver a humungous headline set.

Confirmed for the main stage on Saturday 29th April 2023 are hard rockers South Of Salem who return after an incredible PGM set in 2021. One of the hottest unsigned rock acts in the UK right now, Marisa & The Moths will also be appearing - their debut self-titled LP hit #66 in the Official Downloads Chart and has amassed hundreds of thousands of streams globally.

Alt-pop trio Exploring Birdsong return with new video 'Ever The Optimist'

Acclaimed young alt-pop/prog trio Exploring Birdsong return with their new single/video 'Ever The Optimist', their first new music in three years since 2019's stunning The Thing With Feathers EP.

Watch the video for 'Ever The Optimist' here: https://youtu.be/JIpQtTQXpc4

Pre-save the single, released 25th November, here: https://orcd.co/exploringbirdsong_evertheoptimist

The band comment:

"This song certainly has the most interesting back story to any of the tracks we’ve written. When in university back in 2018, Lyns and Matt were given the opportunity to have a one on one songwriting session with Sir Paul McCartney. This is the song they took into the session and worked on with Sir Paul himself. It’s by far the poppiest song on the record and was the catalyst for centring our songs around synths as well as sole piano parts."

Rarely are new groups as exciting, talented or unique as Exploring Birdsong, the piano-led guitarless trio from Liverpool. Straddling pop, progressive rock and uncategorisable genre-blending beauty, the band are unplaceable for the most part, but bring to mind elements of Kate BushSleep Token and Agent Fresco.

Rarely too do you hear voices as captivating as frontwoman Lynsey Ward’s. Powerful, controlled, and spine-chillingly tender, Lynsey’s vocals help mark Exploring Birdsong as a prospect to watch, already receiving acclaim from Kerrang!, Prog Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine, and many more.

Following the release of their debut EP The Thing With Feathers (2019, Long Branch Records), the band finally return with their incredible new single 'Ever The Optimist'.

‘Ever the Optimist’, was originally penned when the band studied at LIPA, Sir Paul McCartney’s prestigious performing arts institution in Liverpool. The band’s songwriting talents earned them a one to one songwriting session with Sir Paul, with whom they crafted the skeleton of the single. Described by the band as ‘a complete melting pot of all the influences that makes us sound like us’, the single sees the band steer closer to their pop influences than ever before, with one of the best choruses you'll hear this year.

The young group most recently made their European debut at Euroblast festival (Cologne, DE) - their first live performance since their five city inaugural headline tour across the UK in September 2021, including London, Manchester and Birmingham, and following the successful support tours with the likes of Sleep Token and Thank You Scientist. Whilst the band refuse to be pigeon-holed to one genre, they evoke moments of Agent Fresco, Kate Bush, Everything Everything, Sleep Token and Karnivool.

Matt Harrison - drums, percussion

Greek mathcore quartet Blame Kandinsky stream new single 'Vague'

The Greek lovechild of Botch and The Dillinger Escape Plan, the raucously brilliant Blame Kandinsky, have streamed their excellent new single 'Vague'.

'Vague', the second glimpse of their forthcoming album Eclectic Ruiner (2nd December, Venerate Industries), can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/dXgIdAIudqM

Pre-order Eclectic Ruiner here: https://www.venerateindustries.store/blamekandinsky

Guitarist Marios Samaris comments: "'Vague' refers vaguely to our existence. We've been thinking about how elusive is, in fact, to be alive; trying to find that piece that the world is seeking. People constantly studying the past and the future, making recipes which theoretically will help them to achieve happiness while everything is transitory. Do we feel alive? What's the cost of one's dream? Would any of it make sense if there was no end? It seems like there are no successes, no failures, no patterns, no universal truth. There is just the urge to escape any routine. As surprises and the aftermaths grind on, all is vague."

A highly regarded group from Athens, Blame Kandinsky in their time have played alongside Cavalera Conspiracy, and toured multiple times across Europe. The band released their debut album Spotting Elegance In Chaos in 2017, recorded 100% live, capturing the very essence of a group steeped in the creative tradition of the best mathcore and melodic hardcore.

Due to COVID activity hiatus, Blame Kandinsky used the years to focus entirely on the compositional honing of Eclectic Ruiner. The group’s second album is a broad concept record about everyday struggle – it describes the idea that pain is not an illusion, and empathy is essential in order to survive.

In a world asphyxiated by indecency, racism, inequality, and greed, the brutal honesty of Eclectic Ruiner shines though. Elements of Fall of Troy, The Chariot, Every Time I Die, and even Converge also blossom on a record that overflows with fury, melody, and passion. A true gem from the East.

UK post-punk group NAUT release new single 'Unity of Opposites'

Evocative UK post-punk quartet NAUT have unveiled their haunting new single 'Unity of Opposites', taken from their recently-announced debut album Hunt, to be released 24th February via Season of Mist.

Experience 'Unity of Opposites' here: https://redirect.season-of-mist.com/Naut

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/RO8GaAQbo4w

Fashioned in the depths of lockdown, 'Unity of Opposites' is the first glimpse of the stunningly dark, poetically beautiful Hunt.

The band comment: "At last! It has been a long time coming but finally we can reveal the first single from our debut album. We feel that 'Unity of Opposites' best sums up our sound and the approach we have taken with Hunt: dancefloor hits mixed with our blend of knife-edge rock and post-punk. It was inspired by the writings of Heraclitus and how this still relates to our current world as a seemingly universal truth, the pendulum swings back and forth, to the same place but it’s never the same motion. To top it off, Chris 'Stig' Miller from legendary UK band Amebix lends his talents to a short spoken word section in the song, and it was wonderful to have him do so."

NAUT are a four-piece drum machine rock band from Bristol, whose shared love of classic rock and metal, alongside reverence for the post-punk pioneers of the late 70s and early 80s, makes itself known from the start. Triumphant synths and scything guitars entwine with danceable beats, while driving bass-lines, moving to pounding drums, create a dynamic and shifting rhythm section. The tracks pulse with a raw post-punk energy but always remain danceable and (perhaps most dangerously) catchy. The lyrics touch on mental paralysis, impending doom and divided peoples, and with the path our world is currently on they have become more relevant than ever.

Starting out as an evening sharing riffs in a flat in Bristol, the first tracks for NAUT had their genesis in 2016. Those first riffs, written by Gavin (vocals) & Jack (guitars) grew to become something much more compelling and after that initial moment, the idea of a band was born.

It all rapidly fell into place. NAUT's first show was in September 2017 followed by two shows supporting Grave Pleasures before the year was out, and they entered the studio the following November. Raise the Lights - their debut EP was recorded at RS Studios in Bristol by Jamie Elton (Moss, Amulet, Spite) and was mastered by Orgone Studios (Ulver, Grave Pleasures, Ghost). The intention was to break out into the world and NAUT did just that, with coverage in Kerrang! Magazine as well as a host of smaller blogs, publications and radio.

NAUT's Semele EP was released in November 2019 and was well-received, from UK press and beyond; the band also supported post-punk legends Pink Turns Blue, Discharge, and Orange Goblin and played the warm-up show for Incineration Festival in London alongside Idle Hands

The end of 2019 also saw a change in NAUT’s format, with the departure of their drummer. NAUT had started life as a drum machine project before the addition of Kenny Selway for the debut EP, and after a string of changes, the obvious choice was to return to that format. This opened up new avenues for musical exploration, on and off stage.

With the spectre of a global pandemic looming large, in March 2020 NAUT played their last live appearance of that year in a sold out St Pancras Old Church in London with King Dude.

With that the world of live music went silent.

However NAUT remained active below the surface: 'Threads' and 'Hand in Hand' were released as a double A side 7” in June 2020. With this release NAUT further gained the attention of fans from across the spectrum of dark music - the band featuring in Kerrang!'s Rock Chart and a number of other high profile goth and post-punk playlists.

Not content with releasing these new songs, NAUT began work on their debut album and struck a partnership with Doomstar booking agency, ready for the return of live music.

Now NAUT are excited to have signed with Season of Mist for the release of their debut album, Hunt. The label has come to represent all shades of musical darkness and feels like a strong pairing for NAUT, as although the band are less extreme in their musical approach, dark music in all its facets underlies all that they do.

Of 'Plume', vocalist Stephany comments: “On rEvolve, we set no limits to our creativity. It was a very challenging album for us to write and it pushed us way out of our comfort zones. Each of us went through times when we thought “oh wow, this is really hard, I don’t know if I’m going to make it…but let’s do it anyway”. As passionate musicians we can only hope that true metal fans will see the blood and tears we put in.

"
rEvolve’is a perfectly timed release valve for the two years of isolation, anxiety and grief we all went through recently. That challenging time really shone a bright light for me on an endless cyclical loop of frustration, grief, addiction and hope many of us are stuck in without even realising it. The songs convey a mix of fury and anticipation that we didn’t even realise we felt so strongly, and the results were often surprising and emotional to us."

Kassogtha will support Avatar across Europe next spring. Dates as follows:

Kassogtha place authenticity and sincerity above smoke and mirrors: a genuine metal band for true metal fans that takes the genre further without abandoning its core ingredients. From Pink Floyd to Gojira, Kassogtha’s no-nonsense brand of groovy progressive death metal combines a variety of influences to create a steamrolling fusion of irresistible riffs, neck-breaking drums and a vocal range covering devastating growls and ethereal melodies.

Kassogtha was brought to life by vocalist-lyricist Stephany and chief songwriter Morty in Geneva, Switzerland. The band’s debut album A New World to Come (2017) was followed by their sophomore EP The Call (2019), where Kassogtha showcased their musical diversity with an edgy cover of Pink Floyd’s 'Welcome to the Machine'. Having shared the stage with the likes of Cellar Darling, Sirenia, and The Agonist across Europe, Kassogtha recently performed with Triptykon, at which they filmed their 'Complacency' video.

On the band’s new concept album rEvolve, Stephany conquers her inner demons and tells the story of an endless self-destructive cycle of fear, anxiety, and jealousy. In a world that normalises negativity, we have forgotten how to be ourselves — and following a pandemic-enforced long, hard look at humanity and society, this is Stephany’s journey of dealing with these emotions. This album is a perfectly timed release valve for two years of isolation, anxiety and grief — a furious expression of frustration with your own inner demons.

On rEvolve, produced at Stockholm’s legendary Fascination Street Studios with David Castillo (Carcass, Opeth, Leprous), Linus Corneliusson (Ihsahn, Amorphis) and Tony Lindgren (Carcass, Opeth, Katatonia), Kassogtha showcase old school riffs and progressive inspiration, savage grooves and blast beats, creativity and speed, and pure, honest dedication to their craft.

Irish doom metal band Darkest Era release new single/video 'Wither On The Vine'

Irish dark metal band Darkest Era have released their emotive new single 'Wither On The Vine'. It's the third track to be taken from their stunning new album, Wither On The Vine, which is out now via Candlelight Records.

Check out new single / video here: https://youtu.be/EOHWBHazNx8

Order the album here: https://darkestera.lnk.to/WitherOnTheVinePR

Guitarist Ade Mulgrew comments: "The song 'Wither On The Vine' pulls together many of the thematic threads across the album. It is inspired by the antithetical feeling of, on one hand, overwhelming despair at the social, political, and environmental realities of today, whilst simultaneously looking into the innocent eyes of childhood and wanting to maintain the illusion that there is only beauty in the world for as long as possible."

Eight years have passed since Darkest Era’s last album, 2014’s Severance. In that time, the Northern Irish-centred band have undergone personal and personnel changes, while the world itself has entered its own new dark era. Now, they return with critically acclaimed third album, Wither On The Vine.

Recorded at Wales’ legendary Foel Studios with producer Chris Fielding (Electric Wizard, Primordial, Winterfylleth, Witchsorrow), it finds the band exploring their shadowy take on the traditional heavy metal sounds of Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy, whilst incorporating elements of doom, black metal, blackgaze and anything else that casts a musical shadow. Expanding their horizons as to where their sound could go on Wither On The Vine, guitarist Ade Mulgrew says it could best be described as simply “dark metal”.

Speaking on the album, Ade adds: "The album presents a bleak reflection of the world as it stands today; politically, socially, environmentally. Among themes of human tragedy and personal introspection, there are also songs touching on pagan spirituality, the Dionysian perspective and even gothic romance. Stylistically the album mixes black metal and doom metal elements with an almost classic rock sense of tone. We hope the album resonates with listeners seeking music with genuine power and emotional weight, pulling them into its dark visions."

After a long absence, far from withering away, Darkest Era have returned as experts in their craft, and made a definitive dark metal statement.
