Ukrainian doom proggers Stoned Jesus have announced their first full-length in five years, Father Light, set for release on 3rd March via Season of Mist. They have also unveiled their atmospheric and bluesy new single / video 'Thoughts and Prayers', a fitting title given their current situation.

Following previous singles, 'CON' and 'Porcelain', 'Thoughts and Prayers' is another great taste of new full-length Father Light, an album packed with deep lyrical themes and genre-bending musical ingenuity.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Igor Sydorenko comments: "I wrote these songs mostly in 2019, we worked on them through 2020, recorded them in 2021 and were ready to release them in 2022...and finally the first batch of them is coming out as Father Light in 2023! So this is neither our "pandemic" nor our "war" record, this is something I was really obsessed about many months ago – climate change, media numbness, corporations' impact, social divisions...

"But revisiting these issues years later shows that they're still important and this is still something that resonates with us – and hopefully will resonate with many other people, too. Musically I think this is our most diverse and mature record to date, but there's a good dose of old school
Stoned Jesus there too!

"Anyway, enjoy this one and fingers crossed for 2024's release of
Mother Dark - the moodier, more personal, more experimental sister album to Father Light.

The artwork for Father Light was created by Anton Pcholkin and can be found below, together with the tracklist.

Stoned Jesus recently announced their appearance on the mighty Hellfest of 2023. More information on tours/festival for 2023 will be announced on a later stage.

Stoned Jesus are also well known for their song ‘I'm The Mountain’ which managed to reach a whopping 15 million views on Youtube, check it out here.

Progressive doom newcomers The Abbey release new single 'Starless'

The Abbey, progressive doom newcomers featuring Natalie Koskinen (Shape of Despair), Jesse Heikkinen (Henget, Iterum Nata), Vesa Ranta (Sentenced, The Man-Eating Tree), and Janne Markus (The Man-Eating Tree), have revealed another haunting song, 'Starless'.

The track is the latest single from The Abbey's forthcoming debut LP, Word of Sin, released 17th February via Season of Mist

Watch the video for 'Starless' here: https://youtu.be/Fez71gk9jTU

The Abbey comment on the offering: "It's the darkest song in the album, both musically and lyric-wise. Composed by guitarist Janne Markus, 'Starless' shows the heavier side of the band. The lyrics by singer Natalie Koskinen contemplate the inner emptiness and the loss of will to live."

In celebration of the news, The Abbey have launched pre-sales of the album, in CD and digital formats.

Vinyl will be released on 7th July, with pre-sales at a later date.

Aleister Crowley is a legendary name. His Abbey of Thelema – located Sicily, Italy – functioned as ground zero for many of the occultist’s most complex and groundbreaking hedonistic pursuits.

One hundred years after Crowley’s eviction from the Abbey by Benito Mussolini’s regime, new progressive doom band The Abbey emerge with their debut album Word of Sin.

Jesse Heikkinen, a veteran of the Finnish scene and solo artist known as Iterum Nata, is the mainstay of The Abbey. Drawing lyrical inspiration from esoteric organisations, their beliefs and his own practices, Heikkinen and co-lead vocalist Natalie Koskinen (Shape of Despair) weaved ritualistic tales from the darkest corners of themselves to pair with music that is a provocative, alluring kaleidoscope of dark, heavy rock.

The Abbey's tale began when Heikkinen generated the sudden urge to try his hand at singing in a doom metal band after laying down guest vocals for fellow countrymen Fuzzifer. His idea was to form a doom metal band with “big vocals” — a project for fun’s sake that would thrive off writing from the heart and improvisation. Those plans involved former Sentenced and The Man-Eating Tree drummer Vesa Ranta — the first name that came to Heikkinen’s mind for the project.

Word of Sin was recorded between April and November 2021 in several locations across Finland. Drums, bass and Markus’s guitars were tracked at Kratio Studio in Oulu by Kyösti Rautio. Rautio also served as co-producer and mixed the album, becoming the unofficial sixth member of The Abbey. Heikkinen, who recorded most of his vocals and guitars in his stepdaughter’s room, surrounded by My Little Ponies, Disney figurines and a pile of esoteric literature, is careful to point out that The Abbey fails to drop into any neat, little subgenre.

“The album was made purely for self-expressive reasons,” he says. “My music is the channel where I can be as true and authentic as possible. It is also a somewhat safe way to explore and express the dark side of myself and the collective consciousness. Word of Sin may seem like a tremendously dark piece as a rock album, but it’s pretty lightweight for a doom metal album! The material proved so strong that it was obvious that it wasn’t going to be another side project. I think using the means of improvisation made the music sound more like its creator instead of it being forced to be this or that — and that seemed to work really well for us!”

The creative process behind Word of Sin proved so fruitful that the members of The Abbey are already thinking about a follow-up, a testament to the material’s inherent strength and the immediate bond between all five musicians.

The Abbey are:

Henri Arvola – Bass
Jesse Heikkinen – Guitar, keyboard, percussions, vocals
Natalie Koskinen – Vocals
Janne Markus – Guitar

Irish indie-punks New Pagans release new single 'There We Are John'

Critically lauded Irish indie-punk group New Pagans have released their excellent new single 'There We Are John', from their upcoming second album Making Circles of Our Own (17th February 2023 via Big Scary Monsters).

Stream here: https://orcd.co/therewearejohn

The rousing single is directly inspired by artist, filmmaker, activist Derek Jarman. Spirited and uplifting, the track is about growing things out of desolate situations and spaces.

In the words of New Pagans' bassist Claire Miskimmin: "Derek Jarman was a visionary avant-garde artist & filmmaker, with a career spanning four decades and multiple genres. An important figure in the history of gay culture, he's been described as the Queer Pagan Punk."

New Pagans' vocalist Lyndsey McDougall continues: "I first encountered the work of Derek Jarman through his coastal garden, Prospect Cottage in Dungeness. When we wrote this song, we had just lost our home and had moved in with my parents (as a result of restrictions around the creative industry during Covid) and my dream of owning a garden seemed further away than ever. Somehow, studying Jarman's Prospect Cottage garden brought me great serenity and hope. In a place considered so desolate, Jarman created a beautiful, fruitful landscape. This song is about hope."

The new single is taken from the band's new album Making Circles of Our Own out 17th February

As the music industry fights to return from the brink, New Pagans abandon chaos for a brief moment, in search of hope. Making Circles of Our Own is a glorious listen, incisive, inspiring, and uplifting. Ultimately, the album details the journey to self-assurance, deftly led by singer and wordsmith Lyndsey Mcdougall, whose transportive lyrics demand instant repeat listens.

New Pagans' critically acclaimed debut album, The Seed The Vessel The Roots and All was a self-reflective and self-critical release. Instead, Making Circles of Our Own is more poised, curious and outward-looking, but not without its own moments of angry power. Focusing on the societal limits placed on age and gender, the album is a strong statement of intent from the group, recalling elements of Pixies, PJ Harvey, and Quicksand.

Making Circles of Our Own is New Pagans' successor to the globally-lauded debut The Seed, The Vessel, The Roots and All (March 2021, Big Scary Monsters), which received acclaimed from Stereogum, Kerrang!, The Independent, NPR and more, and led to tours with Skunk Anansie and Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls.

New Pagans will be touring Making Circles of Our Own in March.

On the new single, vocalist Zoltán Bodóczy comments:"In this light song, the will to start over has been born. Before that process can begin you have to get rid of the old things in order to make room for new ones. The lack of old things, the longing for the lost glory is so strong that it completely paralyses you; until you get rid of it, you have no chance."

On new album Solar Flare, he adds: "The album lyrics basically deal with a difficult period in my life and I practically processed my confusion in them. Everything's here: breakup, depression, starting again, failure, standing up, new love, unfinished business. From this cavalcade, I was able to highlight some ideas and these served as the basis of the lyrics. We tried to arrange the order of the tracks in such a way that a process emerges from the album as a whole. "

India's premier solo metal musician Demonstealer announces new album, The Propaganda Machine

Cover art and full tracklisting of The Propaganda Machine has also been revealed, which you can view below. Artwork by Daemorph Art.

Featuring a stellar line-up of metal musicians across the globe, The Propaganda Machine is another chapter in the story of one of heavy music’s most tenacious underground legends. The album is a brilliantly wicked 40-minute ride featuring the likes of Hannes Grossmann (Alkaloid, Triptykon, Blotted Science), Martino Garattoni (Ne Obliviscaris, Ancient Bards), and Ken Bedene (Aborted). Technical symphonic death metal at its finest – no holds-barred, full-throttle heaviness. Relentless in its brutality, triumphant in its melodies. Vocally the album is also hard-hitting, marking a lyrical turn to reality and escape from fantasy - an eviscerating take on the polarised world today, and a record that fully speaks truth to power.

Sahil Makhija, better known as Demonstealer, has long been one of the pillars of the heavy metal scene in India. From being at the vanguard of a fledgling metal scene to becoming one of its most visible and respected proponents today, Demonstealer is integral to the growth of the Indian metal community.

In 2000, Demonstealer formed Demonic Resurrection, one of India’s best known and biggest metal bands. Over the last two decades the band has become one of the most recognizable faces of Indian metal, nationally and internationally. Also in 2000 he established India’s first recording studio dedicated solely to metal - a home to all of the country's top metal bands.

Five years later he launched Demonstealer Records – India’s first metal record label. The roster included the best in India’s burgeoning metal scene, and licensed internationally renowned acts, including Behemoth and Dimmu BorgirDemonstealer also founded and ran Resurrection Festival, alongside Demonic Resurrection bassist Husain Bandukwala. For years it was India’s only dedicated extreme metal festival. Needless to say, Demonstealer’s impact on the national scene cannot be overstated.

Aside from the success of Demonic Resurrection (5 studio albums, Metal Hammer Golden God award, multiple tours and festivals across UK and Europe), Demonstealer’s solo career is notable. From his debut album And Chaos Will Reign (2008) to 2021’s The Holocene TerminationSahil has been blazing a thunderous solo trail.

Narrow Head release new single 'Caroline'

US alt-grunge group Narrow Head have released their gorgeous new single 'Caroline', another glimpse of their mighty new album Moments of Clarity, out 10th February via Church Road Records.

Stream here: https://lnk.to/nh-caroline

Pre-order here.

The latest single captures the band at their most nakedly pop-inflected moment yet. Washes of melody and A/B song-structures are subsumed in an ocean-spray of glimmering distortion and aired with sweetly sung words, generating Moments of Clarity’s soft album centrepiece.

“I’ve always thought Caroline was such a singable name,” frontman Jacob Duarte admits. “I’ve written dozens of songs using that name but never really brought them to life. I guess Caroline is a pseudo name I use for lyrics. Just rolls off the tongue. So when people listen to this and think to themselves ‘who’s Caroline?’ I don’t think I know who they are either.”

Solitude, melancholy, and revelation bleed into each other throughout Narrow Head’s, Moments of Clarity, transporting the listener through a vast terrain of emotional spaces.

Traversing the depths of towering, churning riffs, bouncing, lock-grooved rhythms, and crystalline, gorgeously constructed hooks, the Houston-based outfit puts on a masterclass in the art of writing songs that match the pain, pleasure, and confusion of modern living. Each track is sentimental without being precious, heavy without unnecessary griminess, pop-forward without letting the listener off the hook easy: these songs ask for some form of hurt or desire to be paid back to them in return, some promise that the listener is putting equal skin into the game.

Moments of Clarity’s title-track lyrically evokes images of numbed psyches and deep loathing, yet all the while holds out a sense of forgiveness in not knowing how to get better, a sense of forgiveness in the fact that, “it’s ok to say you want more.” Moments of Clarity tunnels through a thick morass of sticky rhythms, eventually exposing a melody so triumphant and stadium-sized in its confidence that it almost seems to channel the ghosts of Oasis’s Knebworth 1996.

The record’s title came to vocalist/guitarist Jacob Duarte in an ambient, almost haunting fashion. The months surrounding the release of Narrow Head’s prior record, 12th House Rock, were marked by a series of personal losses and spiritual trials. Throughout the writing process of this most recent record, the turn of phrase “moments of clarity” appeared to materialise wherever Duarte looked in an almost serendipitous fashion. The notion of moments clarity seemed to coalesce as if it were a totem to the desire to keep on living, a counterweight to the self-inflected damage and depravity that defined much of 12th House Rock’s lyrics. “The phrase created a space for me to reflect upon my own life,” Duarte admits, “since our last record I’ve had plenty of moments of realization like that… when you experience friends dying, you’re forced to see life a little differently.”

Moments of Clarity reflects this matured sense of purpose. Longtime Narrow Head fans will undoubtedly still recognise the band’s signature marriage of brutality and grace, and many of the core themes of desolation, loss, and self-medication that the band established on their prior records Satisfaction (2016) and 12th House Rock (2020) continue to haunt the edges of Moments of Clarity. All the same, Moments rises above the darkness with a sense of elegant repose. While not exactly optimistic in outlook, these songs simmer with a certain life affirming desire, a burning passion to transcend pure cynicism and self-destruction, if only for even a few seconds.

This newfound lust for life is baked into the essence of the songs themselves. Each riff, melody, and drum fill has been rigorously constructed and pushed towards its most simplified, base instinct. There are no frills or unnecessary ornamentation, only pure sensation in the absence of conscious thought. Duarte credits the presence of Sonny DiPerri (NIN, Protomartyr, My Bloody Valentine), who recorded, mixed, and produced the record, with elevating Narrow Head’s sound. Prior to recording, the band spent a week with DiPerri at a house in Sherman, TX, reworking and refining the record with a sense of surgical intent, sculpting each melody and hook until it had reached its logical conclusion. The band then relocated with DiPerri to Jeff Friedl’s (Devo, A Perfect Circle) home-studio in Los Angeles, where they completed the tracking of the record under the reprieve of an uncharacteristically mild Californian late-summer.

The addition of Kora Puckett (Solo, Bugg, Sheer Mag), who was promoted from touring guitarist to permanent band member, further bolstered the writing process, expanding the band’s traditional songwriting trio of Duarte, guitarist William Menjivar, and drummer Carson Wilcox and pushing the songs towards a broader minded, arrangement-by-committee register. An ecstatic sense of group cohesion shines through in each individual performance. The songs on Moments lurch and pulse with a sense of breathless, single-minded determination, reflecting the fine-tuned tightness of a band coming off of a heavy touring cycle that saw them play alongside the likes of Quicksand, Turnstile, Gatecreeper, Chubby and the Gang, Young Guv, and Fury. The band eschews any sort of overt reliance upon studio effects in order to convey dynamic shifts, leaning instead upon the strength of the songwriting itself, as well as their intimate familiarities with one another as musicians, to carry the momentum of each track directly.

With Moments of Clarity, the band’s third full-length, Narrow Head dash away any shadow of romantic nostalgia or indulgent self-deprecation. Channelling equal parts pop-star conceit and weathered sobriety, the band have, in the truest and most basic sense, arrived at a record that only they could have written. Moments of Clarity does not speak to or build upon the past. Rather, it cuts straight to the heart of the matter, taking the struggle, brilliance, and mystery of contemporary life as its direct subject.

Moments of Clarity sees its release on Church Road Records (UK/EU) / Run For Cover Records (ROW) on vinyl, CD and all digital streaming platforms. Just after a successful, headlining fall North American run, Narrow Head are thrilled to announce they’ll be back on the road in the US in February 2023 with White Reaper.

ABOUT VV / Ville Valo:

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer, or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millennium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium, it’s apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo’s creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus, it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

“As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how the album Neon Noir was born".

The answer came earlier this year with the melodious exsanguination of first single ‘Loveletting’, followed by the elegiac goth-optimism of ‘Echolocate Your Love’, which Valo described as, "a teary mascara marathon between Robert Smith and Ozzy, with a dash of hope." Now, with the glow of Neon Noir fast approaching comes the driving, nocturnal radiance of ‘The Foreverlost’, an up-tempo paean to doomed romance and a confident affirmation of Valo’s peerless ability to imbue timeless songwriting and balladry, with a whiff of roses and brimstone.

Scottish alt/pop rock band happydaze release new single 'Cool Blue'

Scottish alt/pop rock band happydaze have released their huge new single 'Cool Blue', out now via Thriller Records.

Stream 'Cool Blue' here: https://orcd.co/coolblue

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/TlF15u0sef4

'Cool Blue' is a truly hypnotic song. Graceful, smooth and addictively infectious - without a doubt one of the strongest songs happydaze have released so far.

In the band's own words: "'Cool Blue' is the acceptance and sadness felt when someone important to you can’t be in your life anymore, whether it’s a partner, family or friend. The track speaks to the comfort in it being the right decision, a conversation with someone you were close to, honing in on the push and pull and inner struggle of knowing you’re not right for each other. 'Cool Blue' is about living too fast, knowing you are going to struggle without them, but accepting it’s what you have to do."

It's the first release of 2023 from the quartet, premiered on BBC R1, and follows their highly successful 2022, including support tours with Boston Manor and Neck Deep

The story of happydaze began in an abandoned barn, at a battle of the bands contest outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was there a 15yr old Luke Bovill (vocals) met Pete Bunting (drums) for the first time. Despite being competitors on the day the two kept in touch, always expressing a desire to one day collaborate and play together. Following the break up of bands and numerous creative relationships dissolving, early 2020 found the pair able to start something new. At this point Luke brought in college friend Rory Gault-Gordon (guitar) and at a later date Pete asked Adam Campbell (guitar) from the Edinburgh scene to join. It was here happydaze was formed.

Shortly after the band came together, the upheaval and uncertainty of the global pandemic placed the world on pause. Despite the clear restrictions the band threw themselves into happydaze with a focus and enthusiasm that was immediately different from any of their previous projects. Luke remembers “Like everyone, we were unsure of how long we would be stuck in the house for, and we quickly realised we had the time to work on what we REALLY wanted happydaze to be. This ended up being months and months of zoom calls to write songs - me in my flat, Pete in the studio, which is fortunately round the corner from his place - going over every detail. 16 hour days in rooms with no windows, building something up from scratch. The band really gave us purpose in such uncertain times, and now that we have opportunities to share it with the world and hear how the songs resonate with people.

Following the release of a series of singles in ‘21, the band’s debut EP Underground Summer Sound was released early ‘22. With the world opening up happydaze jumped straight into touring, playing their first headline shows in the UK to the fanbase they’d built during the past year. This was swiftly followed by a run opening for Neck Deep that also took them into mainland Europe for the first time, as well as further UK shows in the year with Between You & Me and dates with ROAM. Alongside the band continued to build their audience and pick up media coverage at Rock Sound, Kerrang!, Radio 1 Rock Show as well as Spotify editorial support at New Music Friday, All New Rock, Pop-Punk’s Not Dead and Misfits 2.0.

Shortly after the release of the debut EP, their thoughts returned home, restless with plans for the next phase for the band. “Our studio space in Edinburgh is a renovated old house” - picks up Luke - “We have a sick community of bands around us in separate rooms, you can hear them through the walls and when you’re outside in the car park. We write & rehearse there, we’ve recorded there, shot music videos there. It really is a second home, for all of us.” In addition to their community, further international influences helped enhance the happydaze sound: “We had the privilege and time to have songwriting sessions with so many amazing producers and musicians - Matt Squire (Panic at the Disco, Good Charlotte), Mike Green (Sum 41, All Time Low), Sky Acord (Issues, Twenty One Pilots) - all of which has helped shaped our songwriting. Alongside we all appreciate and love electronic, emo-trap, soundcloud-pop-punk music. This has evolved to adopting elements of drum and bass, garage, lofi beats, anything we enjoy listening to we try to incorporate those vibes into our songs.”

German metal quintet Half Me have released a video for their new single 'Ex Negativo'. The track, which features Marcus Lundqvist of thrown, is the fifth single from the band's upcoming debut album SOMA, due for release on 17th February via Arising Empire. Formed in Hamburg Germany in 2018, the band - guitarists Chris and Julius, vocalist Chris, drummer Max and bassist Tobias - are one of the latest additions to the Arising Empire roster.

The band comment on the single:

"Life is defined as the absence of meaning. The chains that used to give control over life are slipping out of the protagonist's hands and blur the lines of every aspect of existence. Any meaning we give to our own inventions just contributes to the corrosion of our collective mind. The nihilistic tone of 'Ex Negativo' is maintained through a violent outburst of guest vocalist Marcus Lundqvist of thrown, that contrasts the song's fade into an auditive loop of monotony."

In the space of just two years, Half Me have made an impact in the music scene by self-producing their music and videos, displaying their intensive and energetic demeanour. Debuting with four singles initially, it was their their single 'Exitwound' (featuring Jack Bergin of Void of Vision) that gave the group a breakthrough and landed the band in the spotlight of Knotfest’s Countdown to Oblivion.

Musically, Half Me blend a modern rendition of metal and hardcore with highlights of 90s nu-metal. Pounding riffs and breakdowns are accompanied by brutal, yet sometimes elegant, vocals that all balance together to formulate the band’s own distinctive sound. Riding the high of their recent success, Half Me have their sights set on releasing their highly anticipated debut album in 2023, and are sure to make it worth the wait.
