Known as a constantly evolving artist who loves to transcend boundaries, Ihsahn’s musical journey has been relentlessly fascinating and frequently revelatory. With his penchant for collaborative projects and fascination with production, this new three track EP, featuring two new original songs and one cover version, is the direct result of Ihsahn joining forces with URM Academy's online educational program for music production, and producer/engineer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Powerwolf) of Fascination Street Studios

Comments Ihsahn: "I´ve been working with Jens and his team for mixing and mastering for over a decade, but this course spans from pre-production to final master, so I wrote some demos and had Jens be involved from the very start.“

Joining Ihsahn on this project was his long-time drummer Tobias Ørnes Andersen and keyboardist Øystein Aadland, who spent ten intense days at Fascination Street Studios recording the songs.  As well as playing keyboard throughout, Øystein Aadland also adds warm and gentle lead vocals for the track ‘The Observer’ whilst Jonas Renske of Katatonia recorded guest vocals to the song ‘Dom Andra’, a cover of a track by Swedish band KENT

Throughout the whole experience the URM Academy team captured everything on video with Jens Bogren adding commentary to the production techniques used, with detail on mic placements, preamps, drumhead tunings, sharing his methodology and drilling down into what goes into a recording such as this.

Ihsahn adds: "The idea was to capture high end recordings of real instruments in great rooms, and we had an amazing setup for drums, guitars, bass and even a vintage Hammond organ with Leslie, Wurlitzer, Rhodes etc, recorded through Fender combos and analogue pedals etc.

"This was an amazing experience, and very educational, as I love everything related to music production.  Both the Fascination Street and URM teams were incredible, and I believe everyone involved had a great time, in spite of 14–16 hour workdays.  I´m very happy with how everything came together and for those interested in the technical aspects of how it was made, there will be a thorough course coming soon at URM Academy.”

About Ihsahn

Since 1991 Ihsahn has defied expectations and pushed boundaries. More than any other artist to emerge from the fertile black metal scene of the early ‘90s, Ihsahn has firmly established himself as an unpredictable maverick. Frontman and chief composer with the legendary Emperor, he re-wrote the rulebook on epic extreme music across a series of albums that are still widely regarded as classics. Launching his solo career in 2006 with The Adversary he has sought to maintain the black metal blueprint that he helped devise with the world-shattering Emperor, while mischievously exploring progressive dreamscapes, avant-garde jazz, electronica, darkwave, ear-crushing tech-metal and ambient meditations. Each full-length album has had an element of surprise and delight, where the architect plays out his creative vision by building on an unwavering zeal for the shock and awe that keeps his listeners on their toes.

Gideon release video for 'MORE POWER. MORE PAIN'

Alabama hardcore warriors Gideon have released a video for their new single 'MORE POWER. MORE PAIN', a crunchy, epic anthem built around a plate-shifting breakdown. The single is the title track of their upcoming album, due for release on 17th March 2023 via Rude Records (UK/EU) / Equal Vision Records (ROW).

Check out the video for 'MORE POWER. MORE PAIN' here: https://youtu.be/94ykqROz7Os

Pre-order MORE POWER. MORE PAIN. here: https://gideonal.com/

The band comment on the new single:

"Becoming accustomed to pain will leave you asking for more, once you see the growth it can bring. If you can't turn your pain into power, then you will live your life at the bottom, dwelling in self-pity, depression and continuing to revisit old versions of yourself. Being self-aware of your pain is a big first step to growing from the past and unlocking your true potential. Pain will always be a part of life. Embrace it, see it for what it truly is, and use it as fuel to build your strength and create the life you were meant to live: Give me more power."

Since forming in 2008 in Tuscaloosa, AL, Gideon have been making a name for themselves by defying convention, creating their own distinct sound and never settling for anything that was just run of the mill or ordinary. Rather, the band have stretched the boundaries of their sound to great acclaim and to increasing commercial success. 2011's debut album, Costs, established them as powerhouse of the metalcore scene, but that's something Gideon simultaneously pushed away from it, incorporating elements of melodic hardcore and hardcore punk into the fold of their songs, but always with an underlying sense of positivity and defiance. Impressively prolific, the band released their next two full-lengths, Milestone and Calloused, on Facedown Records in 2012 and 2014 respectively, before signing to Equal Vision Records

Their first album for EVR was 2017's Cold, followed by Out Of Control in 2019, a record that deservedly saw the band's profile rising steadily. And then, of course, the pandemic hit. All that hard work and dedication, the progress they'd made vanished in an instant. In fact, Gideon were mid-tour on that album cycle when touring came grinding to a halt and forced the band to return home to Alabama, frustrated and disillusioned with a situation that - like most touring bands - thought might mean the end of what they do. Thankfully, it didn't, which brings us to Gideon's sixth studio album.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Randy Lebouef at Graphic Nature Audio, MORE POWER. MORE PAIN. is a brutally intense burst of violent noise that both nods to the band's past, musically and thematically, but also establishes itself in its own context.

"We had to walk through fire and break down walls to get to this chapter," says Smelley. "We're done explaining why we are the way we are. This album is for the misunderstood, the dreamers, the broken, the damned, the ones that refuse to fall in line. When everything and everyone tells you to give up, your mind can take you to dark places. We came to realize that there was strength in that. Instead of letting it consume us, we fought like hell."

Gideon will embark on a US tour throughout February and March, with support from For the Fallen Dreams, Orthodox, and Guerrilla Warfare. Find out more and buy tickets here: https://gideonal.com/

Electronic ambient duo Aiming For Enrike celebrate new album with double live single

Maverick, ambient electronic post-rock duo Aiming For Enrike have today released their stunning new double album Empty Airports via Jansen Records.

In celebration of the news, the band have released their double live single 'Feel No Threat/Absent Lovers (Live from Artilleriverkstedet)' which you can view here: https://youtu.be/85X0lL-Lnf8

Guitarist Simen Følstad Nilsen comments: "The title is a reference to two songs from the King Crimson record Beat, mainly because the guitar pattern in the first section is heavily inspired by 80s King Crimson. This is one of the songs on the record that starts out as one thing and then slowly morphs into something else."

Order the album here: https://orcd.co/aiming_for_enrike-empty_airports

It’s safe to say that Aiming For Enrike’s fame has come mostly thanks to their frenetic, wild and engaging live shows – having toured extensively in USA, India, Japan, Czech Republic, Norway, England and Germany for several years. Recently the duo have performed at the UK's esteemed ArcTanGent Festival, released an acclaimed Audiotree session, and toured with modern prog titans Leprous.

Previously known for noisy musical transformations and frenetic sonic attacks, Empty Airports marks a significant tonal shift for Aiming For Enrike. More electronic, more atmospheric and massive, the new album delves more deeply in the world of ambient than ever before.

A reflection and recognition of the stillness of COVID-life, Empty Airports was recorded during the strange, silent lockdown months of 2020 and 2021. The most spacious of Aiming For Enrike's work so far released, Empty Airports is also the duo's longest record, and their first double album.

Taking influence variously from the likes of Nils Frahm, Burial, Jon Hopkins, Sunn O))), Empty Airports' title touches on the stopped nature of the COVID world, a sense of the post-apocalyptic, and is a tip of the hat to Brian Eno's Music for Airports record.

Another stellar release in the canon of an already well-regarded forward-thinking group, Empty Airports proves beyond doubt that Aiming For Enrike live entirely in their own universe.

Blood Command release Belinda Carlisle cover, 'Leave A Light On'

Acclaimed Norwegian death-pop quintet Blood Command have released a huge new cover of the Belinda Carlisle classic 'Leave A Light On' via Hassle Records.

Stream here: https://hasslerecords.ffm.to/bc_leave-a-light-on

The band comment: "This song is a dark horse when it comes to hits in Belinda Carlisle's catalogue. Most people just know 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth'. Yngve Andersen (songwriter, guitarist) remembers hearing this song on TV on a summer night, on his home island Askøy when the decade changed from the 90s to the 00s. People there only had one TV channel and it was a Saturday night so everyone was watching TV. All the kids in the neighbourhood ran out after hearing that song and sung it and played; it's one of Yngve's fondest memories. We want to give those memories to a new generation."

The new single is the first new material since the release of the band's celebrated album, Praise Armageddonism, released July 2022 via Hassle Records.

Order Praise Armageddonism here: https://orcd.co/blood_command

Recorded over three years, and re-recorded with their new vocalist Nikki Brumen (ex-Pagan), Praise Armageddonism is Blood Command at their best yet. A one-of-a-kind proposition, the death-pop group combine blistering riffs, a hardcore attitude, and pop sensibility to create truly scintillating, invigorating music. Previously called 'one of the world's best kept secrets' by Rock Sound, achieved one of the Albums of the Year in Kerrang!, and applauded by Metal Hammer, Blood Command have stepped up even further with their new album, with Nikki Brumen fiercely leading the way.

Blood Command have previously toured with Biffy Clyro, Kvelertak, Rolo Tomassi, and Skindred, following the release of their acclaimed EP Return of the Arsonist, the conceptual successor to 2011's Hand Us The Alphamale EP. The band have also shared the stage with RefusedTragedyComeback Kid, and Gallows, and have played Download FestivalThe Great Escape2000trees and Roskilde festivals, among others. Now with celebrated UK label Hassle Records and with Nikki at the front, Blood Command's power and prestige only rises higher.

Australian extreme metal squad To The Grave release new single / video 'Cut Off The Head'

Hardline extreme metal squad To The Grave have unveiled their powerful new single / video 'Cut Off The Head', the third taken from their new album, Director’s Cuts, out 24th February, 2023, via Unique Leader Records.

Watch the video to 'Cut Off The Head' here: https://youtu.be/cbwtJj-m7SY

The band comment: "'Cut Off The Head' is our commentary on the current state of heavy music from our perspectives. Too many people use their “fame” to inflict harm on others, from shitty business practices and bullying within the scene through to taking advantage of and assaulting fans. We’re sick of our art and expression being connected to the actions of these people simply by existing in the same genres. They deserve everything they have coming to them.”

Pre-order Director’s Cuts here: https://orcd.co/directorscuts

One of Australia’s most uncompromising bands, To The Grave return with their heaviest album to date, both sonically and thematically. Since the release of their 2019 debut album Global Warning, the caustic five piece have garnered international success, with 2021’s follow-up Epilogue, a re-issue of Global Warning with bonus tracks, solidifying their position as “one of the country's heaviest exports.” (Revolver).

To The Grave have steadily built an audience in the underground, accumulating more than 11 million Spotify streams, racking up over 5.4 million YouTube views, all whilst decimating live audiences alongside Parkway Drive, Polaris, Cattle Decapitation, Thy Art Is Murder, Vulvodynia and Alpha Wolf.

Now, following a sold-out national headline tour in 2022 and revitalised by a new lineup, the band are more focused than ever, looking ahead to the release of their second album Director’s Cuts in February 2023.

The eleven tracks lyrically expose a societal and environmental hell on earth whilst pushing the boundaries of accessible extremity, full of barbed hooks, thick with atmosphere and drenched in groove. Razor-sharp guitars played with an exploratory approach - blending everything from whammy pedal squeaks and chiming cleans to death metal chainsaw tones - are entwined with live drums to give a level of dynamism that musically sets this band apart from the extreme metal pack, yet they maintain the weight of the heaviest bands today. Vocalist Dane Evans commands a multifaceted performance, bursting with vocal energy from throat-ripping dissonant screeches to low end gutturals.

At just over 44 minutes in length, Director’s Cuts is an album packed with ambition and conscience. To The Grave have never shied away from channeling the real horrors of animal cruelty and its impact into the violent, emotional intensity of their music. Songs such as ‘Red Dot Sight’, ‘Found Footage’ and ‘Cut Off The Head’ perfectly conjure images of a world gone astray.

Director’s Cuts was recorded by bassist Matt Clarke, with drums recorded live at The Brain Studios in Sydney and mixed and mastered by Lance Prenc at Prenc Audio (Void of Vision, Alpha Wolf, Polaris) in Melbourne with album photography by Animals Uncovered.

The band comment on the new album: "This is the refinement of our combined musical tastes, fuelled by our sadness and anger at the state of the world. We made the music we wanted to make without really considering how it would fit into any little genre boxes, because we knew if we loved it completely then everyone else would too. These songs are hard and heavy without being technical just for the sake of it.”

Watch the video to their first single ‘Red Dot Sight’, a hard-hitting track about anti-vegan public figures and the media perception against vegan activists, here: https://youtu.be/_eVHPX18kPc

Second single 'Axe of Kindness' continues the band's strong vegan message, watch the video here: https://youtu.be/jY67FPBNQRE

What’s that old saying? “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” When it comes to Michigan-based metal outfit For The Fallen Dreams, perhaps a more fitting - but just as timeless - adage would be “change is the only constant.”

For The Fallen Dreams' career is defined by constant progression and a dedication to refining and rejuvenating their unique brand of aggressive, passionate metal. The five-piece have consistently demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve their sound and dynamic, despite overwhelming adversity, all without sacrificing the core components of their sound.

Built around explosive breakdowns, gut-wrenching grooves and lyricism that touches on everything from an introspective glimpse into the human condition to brotherhood and camaraderie, these Midwestern masters of metal have made themselves a staple within the international heavy music community.

For The Fallen Dreams formed in 2003, but their story starts in earnest with the release of 2008's Changes - a record that would greatly impact the footprint of heavy music. Following ChangesFor The Fallen Dreams went on to release five more remarkable full-length records, from the atmospheric and moody Relentless to chart-topping comeback record Heavy Hearts, which landed at #162 on the Billboard Top 200 and #3 on Billboard Heatseekers lists. Six saw the band venture into more metallic territory, with over 20 million views on YouTube and tens of millions of streams across various streaming platforms.

While For The Fallen Dreams have been through their fair share of changes, one thing has remained constant: their dedication to growth while never failing to deliver primal-yet-emotional music, which has made them a staple in modern metal.

“The new album Ultraviolet is an open work on the thoughts and feelings surrounding us at the time. The anger, the frustration, the progress, everything on show, nothing to hide. Darkroom practice is something that has been a large part of my creative path, finding links between the emotion in music, putting everything on display for all to listen and exposing a colour photograph, putting it on display for all to see. Only when you are exposed to ultraviolet light can you see life in full colour.”
